Ninjas of Karura-1: Recruit

Archive: 27 posts

There is also a short film that shows events happening before this level right here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=55095-The-Ninja-Baby-(Film)&p=827854)! You can watch it whenever you'd like.

Welcome to the revamped version of my old ninja level from LBP1(I doubt a lot of people were actually aware of it...)! This level does revolve a bit around a story that will be revealed over time, and it is built to be a platformer (especially the challenge area). There are several things I have changed and added into this level to make it suitable for LBP2 (it's a long list!):

Sticker people are replaced with Sackbots to give the environment a bit of liveliness
Updated the costume designs of the major characters
Sequencers and movie cameras are used to make the cutscenes. I did not make them skippable, however the sticker you receive at the end of the level will allow you to skip all cutscenes and jump right into the challenge area.
Dialogue is a bit more mature this time around. PLEASE pay attention to what the characters say. You wouldn't believe how many times people have gotten confused from not listening/reading.
Voice-acting is included for the major characters (all voice-acting is done by me for those who are wondering)
Eliminated the magic mouths in which the player "speaks." I found it to be too strange.
I was told that the LBP1 version was too dark for LBP2. I've changed the lighting, but I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is the same for everyone else. Please let me know so that I can adjust accordingly!
Completely changed the obstacle course leading to the leader's office.
If a player does not reach the end of each specific challenge within a certain amount of time, then they are allowed to skip said challenge altogether. I thought doing this might lessen the amount of frustration players could be having.
Fixed the grading system to be more accurate than the previous version.

I do warn you that the challenge area is quite difficult, but I built it on the sole purpose of proving whether or not you are a platforming ninja. Now, with that said here are some pictures of the place!

Thank you for reading this thread so far. If you find any bugs in the level, please let me know and I will squish all of them for you to have a better experience. Feedback is very much appreciated, and I'm willing to return the favor where it is due.

Likable level.
A few problems: some dialogs prematurely discontinued, plasma light / cannon moved switch for me, maybe a bit too strict "rating" ninja skills. In fact, I'm bad ninja. Otherwise, I like the richness of detail and pretty good gameplay. Very nice fountain !
After short thinking and considering my bad skills playing ninja , hearted level.

If you have 5 minutes, please play my versus level Mad house (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=56662-Mad-House) LBP.me (http://lbp.me/v/z4bz-y)

Thank you for the great feedback! The strict grading system was one of the reasons why I marked the level to be difficult, since I built the level on the idea that you'd have to be pretty good at platforming to be a "ninja" in my world. As for the other problems, can you specifically tell me where things messed up so that I can fix them?

Sorry, I have not seen the question earlier.
I will try from memory:
- in some moments of conversation in the top room, sentences were not completed, and began with the others.
- Moving away from the plasma cannon, plasma ball has somehow moved switch and help me with that.
These are not some cardinal bugs.
If necessary, I will play again later and make some pictures (if it is possible to catch this situation).

Ah, the conversation in the leader's office? Some of the lines that Qrii, the blue-haired girl, says are intentionally stopped to give a sense of interruption, but I didn't do a good job at starting whenever Qrii's lines stopped. ^^; When I get the time, I'll try to fix that little bit of delay between the voiced lines. Thanks for reminding me.

As for the plasma ball, hrm... That has never happened to me before, but I'll see what I can do about that. Thank you for pointing it out.

Hi, I'm glad you liked Emeria (http://lbp.me/v/yzfc42)!

I really enjoyed your level. The environments were rich and well designed and decorated. I might recommend making the paintinator undroppable though, as i accidentally pushed circle twice when exiting dialogue. Other than that, great job! I scored a D, I'll have to replay and get a better grade haha. Thanks for your level!

Interesting level. I thought the voice acting was the star with clear speech and characterization. The Challenge section had some good variety but due to my poor gameplay skills only achieved a sore of F. I'm sure the gameplay ninjas will enjoy and rise to the challenge. Only feedback in terms of improvement would be to suggest a little more lighhting usin darker blue or purple tones that wouldn't compromise the feeling of darkness but would light difficult to see areas such as the spike traps above the waterfall.
Good job sensi! I may return to face the recruitment challenge later.

I wasn't even aware that you could make the Paintinator undroppable, seeing as it was a power-up from LBP1 so thank you for pointing that out! I've changed accordingly.

Thank you very much for the feedback! I will figure out ways to add in those tones to enhance the lighting so that it's a bit easier to navigate the area. I'm also thinking of removing the wall blocking the view of the first couple spike traps too; I placed little stickers above them to warn players, but it might still be a bit unfair...

Thanks for the feedback of "Cybernetic Adventures Delta". That's a pretty good level.

VISUALS:
Some parts of the level could use more corner editing, but the level is well decorated with the right decoration choices, and the ninjas looked awesome.

SOUND:
Good music usage and great voice acting of the two ninja girls.

GAMEPLAY:
The gameplay of this level is a lot fun. Filled with some tricky obstacles and the best part is how fast can you complete through ninja training. Funny that when I went the wrong at the beginning, I died.

OVERALL:
It's a fun level. A yay vote.

Nice level you have here I really liked the voice acting because it really added to the story and it's a lot better than the plain old text bubbles that we're used too, it's a shame more people don't use this feature The difficulty was good and I liked the grading system because it put you under pressure and made the level more intense. The gameplay was solid and I liked how you used different typed of platforming elements between the graded sections (like separating jumping and stealth sections). The ambiance was just right too, the music choices were well picked and I liked the low lighting because it made it seem like it really was a ninja hideout. Good job on this 2011-05-24 18:45:00

Hi - just played your level and enjoyed it. liked the concept of ninja acceptance and training, and the voice overs were great..
I scored a C grade I think, as took too long on certain bits but scored high overall.. 5th or 6th so happy there..

There was a really, really tight close up section leading up to the office which was way tricky with all those mini spikes placed!
liked the materials you used also..

Great stuff, thanks.

Thanks for reviewing my Cuckoo Clockwork Quarter (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=56880-Deliver-me-from-Eve-Cuckoo-Clockwork-Quarter)
Very enjoyable level. I really liked the cutscenes: nice customes, dialogue and voice acting.

The test area provides some entertaining gameplay. Some mild frustration too. (Hrrr... scored only a ' D'. To quote that old robot: " I'll be back.")

Nice work. I'll be sure to check out the next part too.

Hey Q
I thought the level was lots of fun! Pretty much anything dealing with ninjas is entertaining, and this was too. It does sort of feel like an LBP1 level platformwise, but the enhancements you made have melded it perfectly onto the lbp2 world. The characters have very charming personality, something that may have been lacking in it's original form when they were just voiceless stickers. The only thing I thought could have been improved, and this is just my personal taste: the Ninja lair seemed too modern, and not Asian-ish enough. I would have liked to have seen the rice paper wall material used, or any of the other oriental materials. I also watched the Ninja baby movie on your moon, and it was great. You should link it your level just before the scoreboard as it's a side story of sorts with the same characters.

Thank you for pointing that out. I also wasn't all satisfied with the modern look, but I chose to stick with it anyway because this hideout is actually situated not too far away from an urban setting. So, they kinda borrowed some architectural ideas. Later in the story, I am thinking of adding some "improvements" to the building itself to show a progression in time, so I'll see if I can add in some oriental materials next time! Thanks again for playing my level!

*gasp* That's a great idea! 8o I'll definitely do that! Thank you!

Hahahaha, patience grasshopper. With my turtle-like creating skills, even I'm not sure when the next mission will be published! But rest assured, it's definitely on my list of things to work on.

Hi Q, sorry again for the late feedback, got round to playing today

Nice opening, I think the darkness and the claustrophobic layout adds to the challenge, but remains fair throughout.

Voice acting is very well done, clear, understandable and well acted.

As for the challenges, well, I'm a D rank lol! I think just a LITTLE bit more lenient would be good, or at least, rather than skipping the section entirely if you're not quick enough, giving you a different rank. So the logic may then have more than one timer to test the sackboy out. At least that way, when people want to try again, they will then know what to expect.

Overall though, a nice level, and good level design. Things cam eout REALLY dark on my tv (it's HD in case that helps) at some points. I think that some darkness was good, such as within the challenges, but play about a little with lighting WITHIN that darkness. For example there's no reason why the last section where the characters tell you your score can't be brightly lit like a normal living quarters - even ninjas need to see what they're doing, sometimes, right?

Good stuff though, look forward to seeing more from you

It's okay if it took you a while to get to my level; I'm just glad you were able to play it and enjoy the experience.

The grading system and the required time to complete each challenge was the whole reason why I marked Ninjas of Karura to be challenging in the first place. It's expected for players to have quite a bit of skill in adaptability and platforming in order to achieve an A; but then again, I do see your point when players need to know what to expect. I'll think of something for that!

Strange, my TV is HD as well but I guess my brightness settings are messed up or something! On my screen, the level isn't dark at all and I'm able to see the corners of the rooms, even in the darkest parts of the level. But I will definitely put in some lights around the places and see if that helps. I just hope the thermometer would let me add in enough changes. Thank you so much for the feedback!

Hello! I enjoyed this look before you leap type platformer . Though the timing on the training course is a bit rough, but I guess im not a ultimate ninja? The voice acting is a great way to draw attention to the players, so good work on that and even the characters themselves were cool. My favorite part of this level was the platforming even though I couldn't make it the whole way, it felt like a ninja test with the quick movement and hiding. Yayed

Pros: Story line, platforming, grading system.

Cons: Too dark, timing on platforming is a bit short.

Hahaha, I guess it's official; I need to increase the amount of time it takes to complete each challenge. And here I wanted to see how many people are actually willing to push themselves to try and make a better grade. I guess I'll consider changing it then. Thank you very much for playing my level! I'll be sure to check yours out and leave feedback as soon as I can.

And no wonder I couldn't find my level thread earlier when I was searching through the Level Showcase; it's been promoted to the Cool Levels of LBP Central! O_O I wonder if this was a good idea at all, seeing as more people frequent the normal Level Showcase instead of the Cool Levels part but we'll just have to wait and see. I would like to thank everyone who has gone through this level though. I very much appreciated it.

Played it

The Good:
-lots of decoration and cool looking objects (Fountain)
-Good ninja humor
-attempt at a story immersement

The Bad:
-The cage used to catch you at the beginning could look better, make the crates larger so you can see your sack person trapped inside
-Use less grid and more flat planes, the level looks a bit too boxy, even if it is supposed to be a building.

Hi Qrii great level

I found the timing a little too short as i am very bad at jumping and swinging in LBP but not really a big problem.
I really like this level it was different and creative with a lot of appeal.

The lighting seemed fine on my tv and i thought the voice overs were great, nice and clear and easy to listen too just like your ninja baby movie which was also great by the way.

It would be interesting if in your next level you could add an option at the beginning asking for the rank players scored in this first part so that if i selected my score of D's the story would play out with the characters treating me as if i was a worthless ninja or something and for players that did great the story would be different.

I can't wait to see your next level when its finished. Hope you get the plays you deserve on this level.

Intro
I've seen many ninja levels but yours is my favorite by far. It was a vivid experience coupled with what I'm expecting to be a great story.
Criticism After reading your LBP2 modifications you said you added a timer that skipped a challenge if players couldn't beat it to save frustration yet it only made me frustrated and hindered the game play. As I played the game When I was close to beating the first challenge it skipped it and I knew this timer was going to be a problem. After having each challenge skipped I went back to where I left off and beat it anyway. Knowing a timer is always overhead made me rush through some spots ultimately making me play worse. I can imaging all the comments saying "make the timer longer" yet my suggestion is to make it optional to skip it. At least it will give the player time to practice.
On the down beat To end off on a good note may I say "good" does not do justice to this level and I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

Wow, these are very interesting suggestions! :o I like them! I'll definitely see if I can do something like that for the next part , Lordwarblade! Did you know that I have a little class system planned out for the Ninjas of Karura series? It's possible that you'll be given an option to play as one of those classes. ^^

And as for Vmpop, I've taken a look at the lighting to see how the challenge area might've turned so dark when played the first time through, but I couldn't really find the issue. You activate only one global lighting tool as soon as you entered the rooms, and it's the same one you activate whether you used the sticker or not! I hope that doesn't happen to you again or anyone else for that matter, but thanks for pointing it out. I've now implemented a way to make it optional for players to skip the challenge if they don't finish in time. Granted if you refuse to skip, your grade will still be lowered for that section of the challenge area, but at least you can practice! ^^; I actually like this suggestion more than increasing the time limit, so thank you so much!
