Gabriella: The Iron Nightmare
Archive: 28 posts
Hey, pals! This is easily my best level. I worked VERY hard on this level for months, and I finally got to publish it with the PSN back up. This level was originally inspired by one of my all-time favorite movies, the very trippy Japanese cyberpunk movie Tetsuo: The Iron Man, but it became so much more as I went along with the creation. If you are a fan of horror levels or anything just plain different, give it a try. I'll gladly give your level some feedback as well. And see Tetsuo: The Iron Man sometime! Here are some screenshots for some inspiration to play it: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_1.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_3.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_4.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_5.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_6.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_7.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_9.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_2.jpg http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r143/tenchuhill/APhoto_8.jpg http://lbp.me/v/09j28e | 2011-05-16 03:08:00 Author: Turbo_Egg_Salad Posts: 57 |
Wow! I'm usually one for horror levels, and this definitely looks very interesting! I'll play this as soon as the PSN comes back up for my region. If you're able to, you can take a look at any one of my levels in my signature and give feedback if you feel the need to. I marked Devon Part 1 for F4F, but I don't think it's necessary for that level anymore since there are a lot of reviews on that one. You can still leave feedback if you wish. Edit: I just played it and wow! I'll do a little bit of copy-and-paste of the review I had on the level: Very well done! Loved the use of angled cameras to give the right sense of direction! In a way, the cameras gave the whole level a cinematic feel as if you're traversing through a film itself. Or perhaps it was actually a movie and I'm just experiencing my own dream this whole time. Throughout most of the dream--I mean level, I kept wondering what it was that were splatting into a blue-ish, gooey mess though. I was wondering if there was an explanation for that, since I wasn't sure if it fits in with the metallic atmosphere. Despite, the music emanated a nice touch of uneasiness throughout the level as well, adding to the cold atmosphere projected by the grey color scheme. I do have a bit of a thing for songs played in minor key though. Great Visuals! Great surprise ending! | 2011-05-16 03:22:00 Author: Qrii_Nakari Posts: 204 |
This is brilliant. The washed out colours, the music and consistent good design give it a great atmosphere throughout. It has a bit of a Tim Burton feel to it and you can tell a lot of work has gone into it. Great camera work. Great job! Check out mine when you get a chance http://lbp.me/v/09t75m | 2011-05-16 16:20:00 Author: Unknown User |
It's ... awesome! Right atmosphere, a story with head and tail, fantastic and appropriate visuals, no weak spots. Most unusual level that I saw and one of the most original. Hearted without hesitation. Congratulations and my respect. [sorry about my poor english] Good level ! Great sense of atmosphere, I liked how you create some really creepy and disturbing sceneries. The interaction with the girl in the back layer at the beginning of part 2 was a clever addition, I really enjoyed this sequence ! The only grip I have with the level was that somtimes it's difficult to read where you have to go (especially in the first part), but overall it was brilliant. Cameras, lightning, musics, sceneries, gameplay : everything fits to the theme ! Congrats for this good level. If you have the time, can you check my level (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=54330-Dr-Who-Lost-soul-1P-Only) ? Thanks ! | 2011-05-16 23:36:00 Author: Slurm Posts: 262 |
Hey, Turbo_Egg_Salad! Cool lvl! Loved the atmosphere - its really scarry. I was not able to finish it though. Later I'll try again. | 2011-05-17 00:02:00 Author: Unknown User |
Amazing level man, on both platforming and atmospheric aspects. It got my heart and I give them very sparingly! Thanks for a great one! | 2011-05-17 02:17:00 Author: Lockstitch Posts: 415 |
Thanks for all the plays, cool cats. At the time I'm typing this, it's at 750+ plays and rising, and it's only been published for a little over a day. Now, that's not as much as other creators, but for me that's a personal best! This is my most successful level by far. The response has been very positive. The number of plays has surpassed every other level I've published by a wide margin, even my very first which I published over a year ago. I finally got on the Cool Pages, too (page 2)! Whoop whoop. This level is also featured in the level 'Sleeper Hits' by Reef1978. It's a hub with a collection of good, underplayed level links. Check it out! There's a lot of great levels collected there. And to those who F4F'd (ha!) with me, thanks so much and yes I played your levels and reviewed each within LBP2! They were all great! Thanks again! All this support has inspired me to keep going and create more. And I was actually thinking of quitting LBP2 for a while and playing something else! Yikes! | 2011-05-18 02:12:00 Author: Turbo_Egg_Salad Posts: 57 |
Alright. Played this through, it's so good I just have to give you a review *Spoiler Alert* (to those reading this) Gabriella: The Iron Nightmare Score: 9.8/10 Rating: & <3 {:star::star::star::star::star:} By: Turbo_Egg_Salad Wow. Wow Wow Wow. Wow. Story: 10/10 It's a very simple but amazing story. It all wraps together in the end with a huge plot change I didn't see happenning. I thought Gabriella would turn good, but then my jaw literally dropped when I became the doll. Did not see it coming. Simply awesome. Music Choice/SFX: 10/10 Perfect music for the level. Did you make it? If so, kudos because it held the perfect feeling to the level. A mix of creepyness and suspense mix into your concoction of a song. Brilliant! You also had tons of SFX at all the right places. Very few do this, so I give you a coveted SFX Cookie. http://forums.49ers.com/messageboard/images/smilies/cookie.gif Appearance: 9.8/10 Very good. The house at the beginning looks awesome! And with all the color effects, and flippy cameras, this was a blast to look at. However, there were a couple parts that seemed a wee bit empty. Like the part right before the boss (where the jump pad is) felt a little empty. This could be intentional, but don't worry about if not, it still looks great. Cutscenes: 9.5/10 Though there were few, they were done very well. The one at the beginning was friggn creepy!!! Great job! lol, that sounds weird but you really did do a good job making that creepy. The cutscene at the end was great, and I really liked how you made it just plain white. It fit into the story great. Gameplay: 9.4/10 Not only was this a blast to look at, it was also a blast to play through! True, it was not the most amazing thing I've ever played gameplaywise, but still it was very fun. You grab some things, other things explode. Simple stuff like that makes it good. The boss at the end was very well done too. I liked how Gabriella walked on the lower side making the fire appear and you shot at the doll. It felt like I was dealing with both at them at the same time. Overall: 9.8/10 (not an average) Truly one of my all time favorites. That ending caught me totally off guard, and I don't think any LBP level has done that. Awesome level. I gave you a & a <3 but if I was on the rating system I prefer from LBP1... I would give you :star::star::star::star::star: -Valmassoi | 2011-05-18 03:17:00 Author: anoken Posts: 1654 |
Incredibly interesting and atmospheric level. The sections with the girl reminded me of some parts in Hansel & Gretelbot when they used the squirrel character in the back layer following Sackboy, but it wasn't reminding me in a way that felt like a copy version, it felt original still. The girl also made the level feel much darker than the visuals had already made it, since she appeared all cute then later when she finds her doll she's seen in a dark area glaring at the player, which was a little unsettling as I wondered where she was going to pop up or what was going to happen. It felt like the level itself was going to be the threat, yet it was actually the girl herself that feels like the real threat, and that really made the whole level become more on edge. The final boss was great, and I loved the twist at the end. Or rather, end? | 2011-05-18 13:53:00 Author: Moonface Posts: 310 |

I thought this was really great! Imaginative, atmospheric, funny and memorable. | 2011-05-18 18:51:00 Author: julesyjules Posts: 1156 |
This level looks ridiculously artistic and radical! VISUALS: The black and white lighting and details looked creepy, yet amazing, and there's a bunch of great camera angles in this level. SOUND: Great custom musics. GAMEPLAY: The obstacles are completely crazy, and the boss battle is a blast. OVERALL: This level has great black and white visuals and solid gameplay. The end of the level made me laugh. A yay, heart, and positive review. F4F: Cybernetic Adventures Gamma | 2011-05-20 02:07:00 Author: JustinArt Posts: 1314 |
This is easily one my favorite levels that I've played so far, it's amazing in pretty much every aspect. The best thing about the level I think was the ambiance / atmosphere, the black&white color and music made it much more creepy and nightmarish than just using music already in the game or standard color. I really liked how much detail you put into the background, there was a lot of diversity in the materials used and a lot of decorations. As for the gameplay, it was perfect and it wasn't too easy or too hard, you really hit the Goldilocks difficulty setting. The one suggestion that I have is to tweak the boss fight a little bit. The difficulty was good but the fight never progressed, maybe add a few other things to make it harder once you get the boss down to 50% or something like that. Other than that this level was just perfect. F4F: https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=56614-Enigmatic-Music-Pack | 2011-05-20 18:08:00 Author: roflwaffle Posts: 69 |

<3 I'm pretty lost for words right now. This was amazing. Not for kids, I hope it doesn't get moderated. Artistic and amazingly crafted. Very clear that you spent months on it. Very well polished. It was tense and left me feeling confused and disturbed. Normally I try to find things to constructively point out and... I couldn't. I did think that the bit at the end that is the bit with the brain (intentionally vague) was awesome and I thought 'oh here we go I'm in trouble now'. Then I thought woah thats way to small and hard to see are your serious? But it worked so well that I cant suggest anything. The camera spins on jump pads were used with excellent restraint. The fall into the water and floating bounce pad was great also. Oh and the very first part I jumped on to the metal thing and wasn't too sure if it was the right thing to do. It took a few seconds to think of grabbing it. Actually the first part didn't really feel like it had any real development in the narrative after the first scene it was just going through the obstacles until part 2 where it really opened up. It wasn't bad or boring... it just felt sparse... but this also worked in its favour, because I had no idea what was going on, adding to the atmosphere and mood of the stage. This will undoubtedly pick up more plays and it really deserves to be played by anyone that is into LBP creating as it raises the bar of what a platformer can be. | 2011-05-21 03:36:00 Author: Mr_Fusion Posts: 1799 |

The question: Should I touch it? The Answer: I wish I flipping hadn't!! That was surely one of the creepiest levels I've ever played. You sir, are one twisted sack! But, it all made for a very enjoyable level. I don't throw my hearts around lightly, but I believed this deserved it. Of course I had no idea what was going on throughout the level, especially the ending, but that was all part of the fun. Really well made and presented. 5/5 from me. Also, please play my LittleBigCheckers level With a friend of course. The tell your friend to play it with his friends, and so on and so forth | 2011-05-21 17:36:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
I usualy avoid horrer levels so when I saw one made it to the community spotlight I was pretty dang suprised but this defintly deserves that spot. The way the level looks fits the mood so well from the lighting and all the spinning drills and saws of death just looking really well put in. Also I quite enjoyed the story with one of the most original boss fights I've seen just wish it was a bit more difficult like 1/2 way through maybe the doll could start shooting at you or you could add a secod girl giving you double to jump over. Still an awesme level that gets my heart. | 2011-05-30 13:03:00 Author: Unknown User |
This is an awesome level. The visuals are great (very trippy lol), and I liked the custom music you put in there, it fits perfectly. The storyline was cool too, and I personally found the ending to be pretty eerie. Great level overall, gave it a thumbs up and a <3. | 2011-05-31 02:59:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hahaha loved it it was dark and freaky this level is brilliant. This is the way dark nd disturbing should be great work. This deserves a Yay and a heart. | 2011-05-31 04:37:00 Author: Lordwarblade Posts: 761 |
This looks very cool and detailed. I have it queued up for later.. will leave you feedback after. cheers. | 2011-05-31 08:41:00 Author: Flatbadger Posts: 68 |
I have to echo what other people have said here...this was a dark and disturbing level, but it was so much fun to go through. You did an excellent job creating tension using the scenery and sounds. It added to the anxiety I felt as I wondered what was going to happen next, and the ending was definitely unexpected. It was probably the creepiest level I have ever played. | 2011-05-31 16:50:00 Author: SongfireVarda Posts: 24 |
Congratulation on the spotlight ! You really deserve that ! | 2011-05-31 18:15:00 Author: goranilic Posts: 332 |
Hi Turbo, Played your level! loved it.. big fan of horror movies anyway so this was superb! The girlfriend thought it was disturbing! Massive attention to detail, great story line, nice twist at the end... I might look for that movie you mentioned.. Really liked the cam change half way though a bounce pad boost, moving from vert to horizontal. You had some original objects in there and liked particularly the area towards the end with the fingers coming out of it. In my opinion, should be an MM pick. Cheers. | 2011-05-31 19:16:00 Author: Flatbadger Posts: 68 |
This level may be the best level I've played on LBP2 so far, it really is a masterpiece. Every element is superb, the story, platforming, game mechanics, visual interface, effects, sound. The horror element isn't of the cheap gore splatter variety more a gradual increase in suspense and storyline. The visual look is an accomplished combination of lighting, material palette and decoration giving it a unique look. The schoolgirl and Dolly character owe more to the japanese style of ghost horrror genre than western slashers, the story is deftly understated yet really drives the action. The gameplay is well judged, a couple of times the checkpoint was flashing my last life but I still managed to complete on my first playthrough. This is one of the only levels that uses the slanted MM style camera angle to good effect, often that is just an annoyance but here it works without seeming to be gratuitous. Absolutely loved this level, Yay, heart and creators heart for this work of art. F4F:https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=57680-SNOW-WHITE-Noire actually feel embaressed to post the F4F for my rubbish after playing such a brilliant level. | 2011-06-05 19:22:00 Author: EnochRoot Posts: 533 |

Fantastic. Oozing with mood and atmosphere, while the unique, expressive and remarkably congruent aesthetic you have created here trancends the concept of "level" to become "art". Exactly the kind of thing that floats my boat. | 2011-06-13 09:31:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
