Sticky substances for a top down racer

Archive: 8 posts

Things are coming along well for Sackro Machines V3; five tracks are now DONE and the hub world is nearing completion. But there is something I need to know to make certain races more interesting.

For the toolshed and breakfast table tracks that aren't made yet I want to make patches of glue and jam so that when players drive over them they slow down. I've seen it in Splapp-me-do's level but I'm not sure how to pull it off.

Does anybody know how? A big thanks if you can help.

i would make invisible holograms that sit on top of the jelly/glue areas. then put a tag on it called "slow down" or whatever. have an impact sensor set to include touching on your vehicle, then alter the speed accordingly from the impact sensor.

One way to do this (but there might be an easier way) is to copy your existing controlinator set up and have a not gate connected to the impact sensor. have one output of the impact sensor activate the "slow" control settings, while another goes to a not gate which is connected to the "normal" controlinator.

Then on the "slow" controlinator, you just adjust the movers to half their normal speed. make sense?

I'd go with the first half of Shane's advice; you probably have a mover somewhere on your car's chips. Put a 2-gate selector in front of it and hook it up to the mover and another mover that is set to half speed. Per default your car has speed #1 selected, but on impact with the jam a signal gets sent to the other gate of the selector; that state should acitvate a timer that, when expiring, sets the selector back to its original state.2011-05-15 18:32:00

that's a good idea. I never think to use selectors for these types of applications.

although, (cragmite) do you want the jelly to slow you down for a certain amount of time or do you want to be slowed only when you're in contact with the jelly?

edit: you could still use the selector and a not gate to switch speeds if you want to be slowed down only when in contact with the jelly. by default you would be set to selector 1, normal speed. your impact sensor connected to a not gate and selector input 2, the not gate connected to selector input 1.

Thanks guys; this helps a lot. I had thought about selectors but I wanted to be sure it would work and not just waste time. Thank you very much for the help.2011-05-15 20:39:00

You could also use the anti-gravity tweaker to mess with the dampening. I don't know for sure, but it might give you a more desired effect.2011-05-15 21:43:00

This is a good suggestion. You could use the selector setup but with two grav tweakers instead. if you set the deceleration on your movers to 100% activating the slow one will slow the car but there is a chance that you're in a spin at that moment and i am not sure movement in every direction will be slowed. Grav tweakers' dampening will do that guaranteed.

you wouldn't even need the selector anymore with the gravity tweaker. the dampening setting is not affected by another tweaker. So, if you put it at 35% and hooked it right to the impact sensor, leaving all else alone, you'd be good to go.

i agree though that the grav tweaker is the way to go. good suggestion.
