Hologram, Hellogram

i just can't get my head around holographic animation. how do you do it? i've seen really colourful creations with smooth animation and yet when i try to create just one frame, the colour i place on any hologram just turns into the colour of the sprite i'm putting it on... and then there's the problem of actually animating it! i saw a video. this one:

he seems to be using the same layer to create many animations. how is he doing this? i simply don't get it

The notes in that level explain in pretty decent detail how to achieve the effect. Up the video quality to 720p and watch in full screen. He's emitting a three-sprite animation for left and right using a sackbot follower and several emitters. I'm no animation expert, so perhaps someone else here can provide a more detailed explanation if the video doesn't suffice.2011-05-15 14:45:00

ah! so you use emitters, but he seems to have the sprites linked with Sackbot. i thought you could do it without sackboy?

You can, but he has his tied into a direct control seat that control's a sackbot. The sprite animation is emitted from the sackbot as it moves left and right. You could substitute a system of movers that move the emitters back and forth in lieu of using the sackbot controller, but the controls for moving left and right for a sackbot are already built in, thus saving a bit of logic.

You might also want to search for sprite tutorials now that PSN is back up, or look for other vids on youtube. I'm no expert, so there's probably all sorts of techniques and details that I'm leaving out. There may be some valuable information lurking right here on LBPC, in fact.

yeah, thanks. i'm a little more clued in now, but i'm still slightly confused. i just watched Comphermc's latest video and he seemed to take 10 holos (numbers) and place them on top of each other while they were still 'lit'. can holos occupy the same space? if that's possible then i can now get my head around it

Yes, hologram is just like gas... it is transparent and doesn't carry any collision physics like normal materials.2011-05-15 15:38:00

I think the problem you were having was because you were trying to place holo on top of more holo, which the game doesn't like. You have to place it somewhere else, and then move it to have them overlap. 2011-05-15 15:51:00

yes, that's exactly it! so you create your 'frames' so to speak and then drag them over the top of each other. then you use a sequencer or a selector and use that to animate between them. git it!

Also, one last thing, it is easyst to keep them seperate so you have control on which frame you want. When they are ontop of eachother, it is very hard to put the wire on the one you want. It saves you a headach or two...2011-05-16 01:55:00
