'Dramatic' Sackbot Emotions

Archive: 8 posts

Before my PS3 got YLOD, I was working on my 'game' "All a Dream" and my level series, 'OzDust'.
While creating cutscenes for both of these, I realised that the current sackboy emotions are just too comical and not serious enough for more sincere cutscenes. The cutscenes I created, especially those for "All a Dream" has an emotional storyline about trust and friendship, just didn't look right with Sackboy bwaling or over the place, or sticking his tongue out in happiness, and it totally took away from the emotions of the story.

What I am proposing is a new 'style' in the tweak menu (I can't remember the actual name for it. But it is the option to tweak how the sackbot moves, e.g. like Da Vinci or like a zombie etc.)
This 'style' would be called 'Dramatic' or 'Serious', and it would change the emotions to look a lot more realistic for levels in which the creator would like to invoke a certain emotion in the player [such as a character death or similar].

I realise that a crucial part of LBP is that it is 'kid-friendly' and funny, but I think that the current emotion settings we have for sackbots are not the best for creators like me who wish to create more serious story lines.

So what are your thoughts on this? Would it take away from the childish nature of LBP? Or would you want to see something like this in the game to improve your stories? I'd like to here from you!

This would be a nice thing to have, but is it even possible for a sackboy to act this way without looking.. wierd? If done well it would be fantastic
And I think the setting is just called animation style

I think it would be.
I was thinking more of just a general sadface rather than completely bawling or having your tongue sticking out in excitement. It just looks silly.

Oh and thanks.

I think this idea would definitely help with the kinds of stories I'm writing alongside my levels too I've been mostly using combinations of different animation styles and emotion stages to pull off the right emotions, but I agree with you on how comical the third stages of each emotion look; I barely even use the third stages when Sackbot acting!

Despite LBP being targeted towards a younger crowd, I don't think this would take away the "childish-nature" of LBP. Splendid idea! Do you already have a comprehensive list of the different emotions you'd like to use?

I been wanting this kind of stuff for a long time now, along with other better acting options then we have right now.
and neh as it's only would be an option, it would not take anything away from the cute looks of LBP

Yes, scenes would be better with more specific emotions. Maybe something like an 'emotion chart' and you can move a point around, and each 90. degree line coming off from the centre expresses each emotion depending on how far you move the point away.

Then you could make sympethatic smiles by making the expression happy and moving the point slightly to the left. Or sad anger by moving the point down-right.

I love this idea. Sort of like a custom emotion in a way!

But if I want a sad scene in my level, and I want the characters to be sad, I don't want them to be in floods of tears. I'd much prefer it to be just sad, without crying. If you know what I mean?

Or maybe just when you change to that animation style, a new tweak would appear (similar to when selecting the type of sound effect you'd like) which would have a drop-down menu with loads of new emotions. You'd have the default ones, happy, sad, angry and frightened, but you'd also have new ones like embarassed, anxious, sympathetic, depressed etc.

I'd like to see new emotions for just regularly controlling sackboy aswell.

Ie, Up+Left = Confused, Up+Right = smug, ect...
