Bass guitar help pretty please?
Archive: 12 posts
So later this year (around september) I'm going to start taking guitar bass lessons. I've been wanting to start playing bass for quite a while now. And my birthday is coming up next month so I thought I'd would ask for a bass guitar. Anyways what I need help with is that I need some suggestion with bass guitars. I know nothing about what brands/models that are good. So yeah what brands/models are good? I'd appreciate if it would be something under 350?. Thanks! ![]() | 2011-05-10 21:55:00 Author: Alec ![]() Posts: 3871 |
I started out on bass too, it's a nice instrument to start on. My first, real bass was a Squire Fender P-Bass, it's the standard, basic edition most people get when picking up a bass. I still have mine! You can get them in starter bundles that include an amp, pick, strap ect. They're probably the cheapest decent bass you will find, anything else can be pricy. Here's a link (http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/21397-squier-by-fender-stop-dreaming-start-playing-j-bass-pack-black-.html#sterling_uk) to one I found online, but with a bit of searching you will find one for cheaper. That website is a notorious rip off. Good luck! | 2011-05-10 22:22:00 Author: Mr_T-Shirt ![]() Posts: 1477 |

I think I remember seeing something like that at the local music store, but that was almost a year ago. ![]() More suggestions are still welcome. | 2011-05-10 22:31:00 Author: Alec ![]() Posts: 3871 |
SR series from Ibanez (http://www.ibanez.co.jp/products/eb_page11.php?area_id=3&data_id=108&color=CL01&year=2011&cat_id=2&series_id=469) it's really good. There are different prizes. For that budget you can buy a mid tier bass with lots of tech, like parametric controls, active pick-ups and a neck that is quite comfortable, because it's quite flat. I also encourage you to not go on new stuff at all cost, a music instrument used but in good condition is not a bad thing. Instruments are a living thing and may even gain from the hands of good musicians ![]() Anyway good luck Alec!!! Let us know what you're going to pick up. BTW...people born in June is awesome, especially Geminis ![]() | 2011-05-10 22:56:00 Author: OmegaSlayer ![]() Posts: 5112 |
I picked up a used Yamaha RBX375 bass... aka a 5-string John Myung (Dream Theater) model, albeit on the lower price end (should be within your budget). It's a solid instrument and comfortable to play, plus it looks good IMO: http://www.fivestarmusic.com.au/WebRoot/ecdb2/Shops/fivestarmusic/4727/F11E/080D/46A6/6DC5/C0A8/D207/4CD7/rbx375fs.gif Taking lessons is the best choice you could make! Let us know how you make out ![]() | 2011-05-11 00:17:00 Author: Thegide ![]() Posts: 1465 |
Unless you need to be mobile with it I'd recommend you'd get something over a tinny 10w amplifier. At the same volume the difference in sound quality between a 10w and 60w amplifier is huge. I brought my guitar (6 string) second hand. As long as you don't buy one of those horrible "beginner" yamaha guitars or whatever you can't go much wrong. | 2011-05-11 00:37:00 Author: Ayneh ![]() Posts: 2454 |
I play bass, and i started with a Ibanez. It is a very good first bass, and a good price. I cant find a link to it now, but its old. also, you should know that a basic bass has four strings. Some posts go to a five string bass that has an added low string. A 6 string bass has the basic strings, the low string and a high string. when you listen to music, pay atention to the bass. Than try to find some good songs to learn. If you like Greenday, you can try out brainstew when your first learning the E string (top one). Alot of other greenday songs are easy. If you just listen, you can find more. When you get good, and do songs from bands like Rush, THATS where it gets fun Any questions, just ask me. | 2011-05-11 01:55:00 Author: Unknown User ![]() |
Found these 2...they're in your budget range more or less 4 strings (http://cgi.ebay.it/Ibanez-SR300-IPT-Soundgear-E-Bass-/360303828443?pt=Audio_professionale&hash=item53e3c81ddb#ht_1010wt_1139) 5 strings (http://cgi.ebay.it/Basse-IBANEZ-SR305-IPT-Gris-acier-5-STRINGS-/310311982545?pt=FR_YO_InstrumentsMusique_Guitares&hash=item48400915d1#ht_500wt_922) Marco, my band's bass player had the 5 strings (well the version that was sold in 1995 ![]() Unlike guitar, tone controls on a bass are really important, and this one has a real good variety of sounds. | 2011-05-12 15:25:00 Author: OmegaSlayer ![]() Posts: 5112 |
So I went to the music store earlier today and there weren't a lot of different basses. I found an ibanez but they sold it for like 1500€. :/ The rest was Fender basses, so I bought a Squier fender (I think it's a jazz bass, I didn't really check the model). Picture (I'm not left handed the picture is flipped for some reason): http://gyazo.com/22cf686496666536898fdcc969d25f11.png I'm probably going to buy a 5 string bass next year when I get better at playing. Anyways, thanks for all the suggestions! ![]() | 2011-05-12 15:27:00 Author: Alec ![]() Posts: 3871 |
Well, that's the same bass Marco had in the beginning, but he had the black one, with black pickguard. That's not the easiest of bass guitars to handle, but working on a hrad instrument will make you a better player ![]() Well done Alec! Congrats and start rockin'!!! Now grow your hair, get as sick as Steve DiGiorgio and we will set up a band with thegide ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZWMGIF3b-c | 2011-05-12 15:30:00 Author: OmegaSlayer ![]() Posts: 5112 |
My bandmate rocks a 6-string fretless custom Bee bass. Completely sick! http://www.beebasses.com/html/custom.html | 2011-05-12 16:09:00 Author: Thegide ![]() Posts: 1465 |
