Surf's up - my new level

Archive: 14 posts

Hi Everyone - I've just published my new level. It starts with a really exciting speedboat ride, and then land on a beach and find a surfer who needs your help to find his missing buddy. This leads to some classic extreme platforming, and a surprise at the end!!! Oh and if you find yourself trapped in a dungeon, don't despair, just have a look and listen, and you will work out what you have to do.

I have spent ages on this level making it look and feel right, so please give it a go and let me know what you think. Heart if u like it, but only if you think it deserves your heart! I think it's an awesome level and deserves lots of hearts, but thats just me.

There is a small problem at the end which I dont know how to fix, the surfer dudes words appear as "********* *****************" just a load of stars... He is supposed to say something like - thanks I've opened the door for you, but it doesn't work in the published version (works fine when I test it in create though). If anyone knows how to fix this let me know!

EDIT - I fixed this problem - i think it was to far away or something...

Level name - Surf's up
Location - east coast of Australia
PSN- chillum007

My only real complaints are that the second spring doesn't work too well (I have this problem with a few springs I've tried to use). It seems to "spring" but I don't go with it, and instead get under it somehow.

Secondly, I liked the dungeon trap, but it's not very obvious what you have to do to get out (took me about 10 minutes to figure it out). I realized that you were giving me a hint, but I didn't understand it until I had figured out what I needed to do through trial and error. I dunno, maybe it's just me.

Other than that, I found the level enjoyable. That speedboat part is done very nicely.

Yeah that second spring is annoying sometimes. not sure how to fix it though. It's actually three springy objects, one in each layer, I originally had just one, but it was easy to just drop off and then you would have to get back up to it again, so i put three there..... also having three means that if more than one person jump on it at the same time they should all get launched, even if they are landing at slightly different times... that's the theory anyway.

As for the dungeon, did u drag the skull into the second room? He gives you another clue if u do that. Can you think of another way I can hint at the solution without making it too obvious? PM - me if u can - dont want to ruin the puzzle for everyone!

Actually, it was the first room that had me stumped for a while. I was able to figure the second room out pretty quickly (it's quite clever actually). I never actually dragged the skull out of the first room.

If I think of anything, I'll shoot you a PM.

Ok, well I fixed the second spring you should find it plays a lot more smoothly now. as for the dungeon, well, I'm just gonna keep it as it is. I like puzzles, and they are a lot more satisfying if you work them out on your own.

Was anyone else annoyed in MGS4 when you are following the footprints using your heat vision... and you get to that bit where the girls foot prints disappear, Otagon tells you what must have happened and what you have to do before you even have a chance to figure it out for yourself... man that annoyed me. whats the point of a puzzle if you are told the answer straight away?

But thanks for the feedback mate I think the level is much better now I've fixed the springy thing.

Cheers!

Yeah I would like to get some pics up, but I don't have a screen grab capability, and I think that using a camera always looks a bit rubbish... I need a usb cable for my camera atm anyway as I lost the one I had.... might try it this weekend if I can find a cable.

What did you think of the level? I though your abandoned coal mine was really well done.... especially the bit where the miner dies and his ghost come back to haunt you... great stuff... but i guess I should put that in my reply to your thread, not my own.. oops. OK I will head over there now and do it...

I'm not sure if this problem occurred with just me, but it seems that we were not able to have two people on the speedboat, which is pretty silly since you've made a back seat. When Marino was in the front seat, and I was in the back seat, the game was registering me as being offscreen (even though I could clearly see myself on the back) and then it did the 5 second countdown and it died. Might've have been just a little glitch, but you might want to test this out for yourself. If it turns out that it really is something, an easy fix would to adjust your camera view by moving it to the right (our right) by just a smidge.2008-12-09 04:03:00

Really?! Wow - thanks for that Clank, I will definitely look into that. I have noticed that the speed boat bit does get a bit laggy when playing it online, but I've never seen anyone die because they were in the back seat. What did you think of the rest of the level?

EDIT - Fixed (I think)

I've been meaning to review this level for a while, but only recently have had the time.
Anyways, how does it stack up?

Well, the beginning had me a little skeptical, I wasn't sure whether it'd be fun or just plain bad from the way the first couple waves were aligned. Well, somewhat to my surprise, it was pretty good. The boat made for some fun ocean riding and motioned very similarly to what a real boat ride would've been like, and the crash landing was simply perfect. So basically, the first quarter of the stage is certainly fun in every aspect, right until you land.

Next part is climbing the lighthouse, and this is where the level starts trying to get tricky. Springboards, switches, and fire could pretty much sum up the next part, followed by precision jumping and electricity, followed by stickers, and finishing it off is a horribly precise jump off of a reclining sponge block. Most of the level is fairly easy, nothing truly devious until you hit that second to last swing jump, but easy is not synonymous with "poorly made" and in this case is simply more "casual fun".

At the end you get to throw a bungee jumper off the lighthouse.
I'm not kidding, you grab onto him and jump off the lighthouse. He even screams on the way down.

Finally, you beat the stage and get a zorb (which are fun), and overall you relish yourself in the level you just beat and debate whether or not you want to play it again, which in most cases you will due to this level's ability to be easily replayed.

Final Score:
8.0 / 10
Fun stage, great atmosphere, and while not being very challenging still has an amazing replay value, making this a definite winner.

Well, thanks for your review Shining Aquas, I really happy that you took the time to play my level and write such a nice review of it! But most of all I'm glad you had fun playing my level. Did you try my other level - Monkey in the Jungle? I don't think it is quite as good as Surf's up, but it still has a lot going for it I think - in fact going my plays to hearts ratios people seemed to prefer Monkey in the Jungle to Surf's up......Cheers!2008-12-11 09:49:00
