Story Vs. Visuals

Archive: 22 posts

I am very good at using logic and developing a storyline. I though have very little artistic ability and I can never recreate what I see in my head. Is it possible for a level to make up in good logic and story for what it lacks in Visuals???2011-05-08 20:41:00

keep in mind though that you are your own worst critic and I can promise you that. while your visual ideas may not come out of your mind the way you see them. have your friends test out your lvls and you will quickly see if it is worth the logic. I myself am a perfectionist. while I have only 2 lvls I have a pretty cool story in one, but it's lacking in visual and was still learning some necessary logic will making the level. at the end of it all I still have to fix it because it didn't come out right in my mind. and then of course if you do have others help you on your projects. it's your project and unless you get over the whole Only i can do this correctly stigna of creating your masterpiece. your friend design ideas will also fall short of your vision.2011-05-08 22:21:00

Genres that often focus more on clever gameplay than graphic delight are puzzle games, card games and board games. I haven't seen many LBP levels in those genres, so jump right in!

How about a game of 4p Blackjack, Poker, Monopoly, Chinese Checkers, Othello or MahJong?

Hmmmmmm is this a challenge lol =) But to everyone else I think the best thing is just practice and getting idea's from other people, not like big but just some things to help create better enviroments!

I could make lbp edition type cards made of 2 thin layers of holo (1 for back of card and one for the front). I think I can send you a level through email and you would just have to DL onto a usb stick and upload to your ps3. As for not seeing other players cards, you could probly make separate areas and sets of cards for each player, maybe. As for getting modded, I doubt that would happen. The story mode has a pool lvl and thats very known for betting/gambling. So if they take that down, then they should take the pool lvl down too.

still trying to think of how you could do something where the cards are random but you cant get the same card over, and how I would make those random cards work anyway....hmmmm2011-05-09 04:11:00

Combination of randomizers and followers for each persons card set, maybe? Your the logic person XD

To be more on topic, yes you can be successful on this game with one skillset. RTM, shadowriver and C. Mackemy are some names I can think of that are great logic minds and make great levels just from that alone.

Aha! this means you should play my game then! I have a character named Fear with a ton of logic lol, but seriously... I like content in a game, a game with a lot of things to do, collect, maybe quests, just options if its not going to be super fancy looking. With a good story and content you can probably skimp on the visuals, with the game still being fantastic!

No matter what detail in visuals you get your level to be it will ma your level shorter. I Found a way to extent your levels in visuals. I been doing it in LBP1.

Pretty much Delete and Emite objects. Delete Land your sackbot has pasted. That gives you more room then emite more land ahead of your sackbot.
Its actually really tricky if your doing it back and forth. Its easyer if your level is just a one way level.

In my newest project "Warehouse 42" (Check it out under idea's and projects, testers needed once PSN is back) I am working on developing a more in depth story line and having a lot of things to do in a level, not just have it get from point A to point B, I mean it will be an option but Im going to put in multiple side quests that almost all end in more background into the storyline, so if the player decided to skip all the side quests and miss out on a lot of the story line then so be it, I don't want my levels to be get in and get out in 5 min, I want there to be story, I want there to be a character built up inside of that sackboy so that its more than just a little game someone created, its a great story being illustrated by this creator, thats what I reach for!2011-05-09 05:08:00

Story helps the player and gives them something to do and a reason to play your level. Visuals help because they reel the player in and say, "wow how did they do that?"2011-05-11 07:16:00

Ha I tried a strange method where there was a "Infinite bridge" that emits itself in both directions BUT this is actually a logical error that I did not think about.
Try it... its impossible. I felt stupid when it was messing up.

The pieces have to be pre-set and back tracking has to be compensated for, but otherwise an awesome thermo saving method.
Lol I actually need to emit some stuff in my game to allow more...
