RPG Level System

Archive: 9 posts

So I am making a RPG but I want to make it over the course of many different levels. You level up after killing monsters and that is where my problem comes in. Some people may level to Level 3 in the first stage and others may get to level 10. Is it possible to make it so the level can carry over to the next level? I doubt it is possible, the only possible way i could think of is using many sticker switches. Thanks for any help though 2011-05-08 02:18:00

This has been discussed many times, and short answer to that is no. Either way you are going to have to use stickers or codes--both pretty tedious but i think stickers are better if you lower the amount of stickers the player has to use. I don't know the design of your game, so i cant really be much of a help. I think i have a solution to this, but i guess we will see when my game is out if anyone thinks its stupid or brilliant.

Its going to mean more work on you defiantly, but if you make it easy for the player to load their character and status/checkpoints, the less boos you will get and more likely people will play however many levels you publish. With rpgs, you want to try to fit everything one that one level, and divide it into episodes. Since the level resets everything when the player level links, that means more stickers and codes the player has to mess around with--more than they want to. Your going to have to fool the thermo and try to get as much as you can on one stage.

Otherwise you risk the hatred of players when they have to upload the same stickers or codes 5 times in a row just to play one level. The vast majority of players would leave after the first link...

EDIT: It sounds like you could just give them a sticker for whatever level they reach at the end of the stage, then at the beginning of the stage prompt them to past that sticker--thus giving them their level. Make it as un-annoying and convenient as possible, and it might work

If you're just looking to transfer the player's current level that should be easy enough using the player score.

These threads may be useful.

This is what I was planning... assuming you're talking about my RPG >_> <_< ... lol. But if you were talking about my RPG, I was planning a "hub" level where you go around to different level links... thus gaining exp that way. So um yeah. That is what I was planning >_> <_<

What does carry over to the next level are the score points.

My idea would be something like this:

- When you reach Lvl. 1 the player gets 100 points.
- When you reach Lvl. 2 the player gets another 100 points, so he has 200 points..
- etc....you get the point.

Then when you then the player gets sent to another level via link, add a score sensor sensing how much points he has.. So set it like:
- If he has over 200 points, give him the level 2 status/abilities.. etc.

Yea this would work with Linear leveling systems..something more complex would take a bit more thought. Again he never really mentioned the design of his game so i am assuming linear leveling. Sure, you can use score for level linking, but you will have to use stickers or codes because at one point you going to leave the game and want to come back. I love rpgs, but i wont start at the first level every time i load up.

You need for one, a way to get to later level links, and secondly give that player their level back. Thats what i was referring to. Of course if you plan to one shot this game (for however long it is) you can just use score. But like i said, the vast majority of players wont spend 2 hours straight on one level. When those players want to come back and load their game, how do you give them their progress? Thats the million dollar question.

o.O
Well score points are the only things that carry over 2 levels.. and even they are lost whenever you leave the level.. So i guess there is no other way other than stickers and codes.
