Need contraptions help please :)

Archive: 13 posts

Hi I have recently learnt a lot more about logic but my major trouble is contraptions, the most I can do is an elevator but I want to do mechanical arms and legs I want to build vehicles with functions and just know how because like the last thread I made I said I have so many ideas but it baffles me and I've been on loads of tutorials but I'm struggling after loads of experiment failures. Please help so I can actually enjoy create mode instead of failing all the time 2011-05-06 01:21:00

Well,

A cra usually works good with a grab sensor, then add amicro chip so the whells turn at a certain rate when grapped

Or you coud use a controlinator, and that would add more controls

Like the level "mini sack vehicles" that level had a tone of cars.

As for arms, simply first create the arm, with joints of course, (using bolts), and make it so when activated a arm will move a certain length, and the other arm joint moves faster or slower.

Is that what you needed?

You may be trying to bite off more than you can chew. If you have an idea but it's too complex, just break it down into smaller functioning parts. When you have a small and simple idea, you have no problem, so you need to train yourself to think in a bunch of small, easy parts that when combined, is complex and something that you would have never thought that you would be able to create.

I know that's pretty vague, but so is your question. My suggestion is ask more specific questions where you get stuck and you will learn a lot from all of the knowledgable and helpful people on here. Then the more you learn, the better you become at solving problems and creating what you are imagining.

I agree with riverad08, this is a vague question. I have made A LOT of stuff in create. It would truly be impossible to answer this question, depending on everything you want. If you need help you can add me and I'll help you 2011-05-06 03:23:00

i think the best thing you can do is wait for the network to come on and find some levels that are giving away some contraptions. then take a look at how they did it and their logic. try to learn that way. it's really tough to design things when you don't even have any examples.

try running through the in-game tutorials as well. I know the second time I went through them I picked up some things that I had forgotten about or missed the first time.

Like others have said break it down into individual functions. Example: The DeLorean I made for my own amusement. After I made the shape right. I went.

OK the door needs to open when I get near... a player sensor to a piston.
OK - It opens too fast... player sensor to a timer to a piston.
Great.
OK - Now I want it to open AFTER I get out of the contronlinator...
DANG - When the car time travels it kills sackboy.
OK The door needs to open when a sackbot gets near... Tag Sensor instead of Player Sensor.
GAH! - The sackbot gets auto sucked into the controlinator before the door opens!
OK - The timer is hooked to the DCS Eject through a NOT GATE
IT DOESN'T PROMT YOU TO GET IN AND YOU CANT GET OUT
OK... umm... a flashing triangle icon... umm... and AND GATE hooked to the Eject with a Tag sensor that sees a button press on the sackbot.

Well, that let's him get in... now how do I get him back out?

Much, much frustration, and that was just to open the door... and it built it on a larger scale than the final car and used basic shapes to get it working before I fitted it into the car. But as you said, experiment. Just keep the experiment to one simple desired outcome and build from it.

Most experiments fail the first few hundred times, just remember to copy and save the bits when it finally starts working how you want it to!

Making walking legs would be a challenge but remember, sometimes you can MAKE something look like its walking but actually its all done with a mover a gyro and anti gravity.

Failed experiments are never useless if you learn from them. I have one LBP2 level published at the moment but I am having an almost full moon of experiments, concepts and half-done levels. That is how I learned to make that one level (and by hanging around in this forum and reading about other people's logic agonies). It should not be merely the end result that counts for you; the process of getting there should be equally valuable and enjoyable to you. After all, this is game; it is all about progress you make.2011-05-06 07:19:00

Thanks guys I really appreciate the help , what I am trying is a vehicle with functions like those LBP2 levels where you're a rabbit then a dog then a cat things like those I really want to design but I find it hard because PSN is down and I just seem to not understand sometimes2011-05-06 19:32:00

You can actually go into create mode, drop one of those vehicles, and look at the logic.2011-05-06 19:38:00

I looked at them and they look so unbeleivably complicated, but I';m wanting to create like vehicles with some quite constructive mechanisms2011-05-06 19:41:00

For my DeLorean I wanted it to fly, but bounce and tilt a little. I dropped the front facing bee thing and looked through it's chips until I found the flight chip. Copied it to a block of cardboard with a controlinator on it and changed settings until I understood what all those gyros were for. I then tried to build it from memory, that was the first thing I built. A flying block.

I didn't need PSN to do it either!

Hey everyone I've been playing around with quite a lot of the stuff and I've come up with some cool contraptions for a begginer so I'm learning more and more which is fantastic I'm full of ideas thanks everyone for your help 2011-05-10 00:38:00

Hey PSN is back online and I've learned a lot more I've built a fully functioning pirate ship for a pirate level it's not brilliant but I'd still love to learn I also need a bit more help with logic. Please add me on PSN Darksonic or Darksonic22 I would also love to just play with some people online to learn and see what they can create and just have a fun time 2011-05-17 01:11:00
