Good Cinematic Music??

Archive: 21 posts

Lately, music prefrences have become more mainstream, due to overwhelming interest of hip hop, rap, r&b, rock and other geners, from the mass media.

Although I don't have any major problems with this, as I do enjoy many of these genres, I have come to listen to "cinematic" music a lot less. By cinematic I mean music created for games, movies or shows.

I am aware that many orchestrated music pieces are originally created as "stand-alones" and later used for these movies and games, however it still tends to be where most people discover this music.

After reading an old thread about: "what are you listening to", i noticed many people still listen to cinematic music. This refreshing news, i assumed, derived from the fact that most people on this site aquired this taste from the games they play and the movies they watch.

Most games, and many movies, have at least one good song hidden in their soundtrack that only fans of the series may notice, and of course there are those select few that contain a whole sountrack of brilliant songs.

So basically i created this thread so you guys can recommend any good cinematic music you may know of, for myself and others, so i don't have to go through every single game and movie that exists.

I find that the best cinematic music are ones that can get you to play the game again just by listening to the sountrack. In these circumstances the songs where perfectly developed to set a mood, parrallel to the one of the movie/game.

Here are a few songs I get goosebumps when hearing.....

Main song from SOTC, can't explain how much this song brings back memories.

Around 2:40 is the climax if your not patient. This has got to be one of my favorite soundtracks of all time. Splinter is a series many people haven't played, mainly the younger generation due to the fact that it's no longer on ps3 and they might have been too young to play it on ps2. However this has got to be the best drumming/mixing i have ever heard. This song alone makes me want to do some espionage. If you like this check out the chaos theory sountrack, its all fantastic, or search amon tobin, however many of his songs are kinda weird.
Other great amon tobin song links:

Jesper Kyd is most commonly known for making the soundtrack for hitman and AC2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud69bu9ZxYE
Jesper Kyd has a wide variety of music, and makes masterpieces of many generes.

These are just a few examples of maybe the lesser known soundtracks that i enjoy. Any post will be great!

The Sun's Gone Dim is epic.

First of all, that is not the Bourne Theme. That is "Extreme Ways" by Moby. It's used in the Bourne movies but I would certainly say it's not the theme. The "real" Bourne themes in my opinion are even better
I would suggest that this is the main theme, and the second video contains other 'important' themes (and is just overall pretty neat):

I have 619 pieces in my top rated list, pretty much exclusively film/game music I'll stop here for now with the John Powell examples, and switch to a different composer for another post later...

Most games and many movies, at least one good song hidden in its soundtrack that fans of the series can only observe, and of course there are the select few who has a soundtrack full of brilliant songs .2011-05-19 08:32:00

I can't get through the thread because my computer is choking on loading all this embedded YouTube stuff. But for amazing scores, look at:

- Silence of the Lambs
- Lord of the Rings
- Kill Bill

If what you're looking for is 'modern classical' (modern orchestral music), look for:

- John Tavener
- Arvo Part
