Creating levels during the down time?

Archive: 63 posts

Is anybody out there creating some awesome levels during this long wait for online gaming? Are you making a level based on the events that had happened and that are still happening?

If anyone has any great levels to talk about that are waiting to be uploaded talk about them here.

I'm interested in hearing about what you've been working on. I just think it'd be nice to have a place to talk about community levels while we are waiting for community gaming to return. It would be nice to forget about the troubles with the network for a change.

I have been slowly working on bringing the arcade games from the arcade background to working actual games. It's harder then I thought it'd be, even though the arcade games themselves are already built. What's hard is making the game run inside the arcade game screen itself. So far I've done one but have 3 more to go. What I'd like before I release it is have all four working so four people can play different games. Or one person can have a go at all four games.

It's a long project but with all this extra time I'm getting a lot done. When things are back to normal I'll release the one as a demo. Sorry no name for it yet, I haven't thought of one clever enough.

I have 2 mini games just waiting to be published. The first is Shooter+ and it the object is to stay alive. Enemies attack from the top and bottom of the screen, and as you get further into it, the left side. You have a main gun with a moderate fire rate and a secondary blast that kills all enemies within a certain radius.

The second mini game is a remake of my original. It's called Super Shape Popper + . You have a 4x4 grid and different "shapes" randomly appear. It is your goal to pop as many shapes in two minutes as you can. Correctly popping a shape gives you 50 points, while incorrectly popping a shape deducts 10 points.

I also remade my lock box. It now has 3 independent 6 digit codes and each code unlocks a different door. Doors can contain either prize bubbles or level links, so I can do beta tests if need be.

I can't wait for the network to come back up so I can finally publish these

For me, creating is the only thing that keeps me in LBP2 since the PSN is down. I am just so annoyed at the levels i did not ace, and im not risking a controler!

I think that there will be a HUGE wave of new levels will be published within the first day. Then, we will be set for atleast a year... just a realy long time, and it dapends how active the player is.

Oh boy do hate creators block. You'd think I'd never have none with as many projects as I have. The problem is not thinking of something for me to work on it's thinking of what to do next with the stuff I'm creating.

I've been working on some pretty special stuff, but I've needed some help from friends, so it's taken a little delay, but it's nice not to be interrupted while creating.2011-05-05 03:05:00

Also for me not too long ago I discovered what the music sequencer is capable of. I'm a music and I understand music quite well, not so much reading music but I do know my stuff when it comes to writing music. I loved hearing some of the music I had written some years back being played through little big planet. I copied a very slow acoustic song I had written for my fianc? into an 8bit oldschool style type of song. I've also been working on recreating some favorites like Verve Pipe "The Freshman" and some great 80's music I'll keep secret for a bit. It's so much fun putting a LBP twist on music. The music sequencer is one of the best additions to the series.

Just a note I don't care what anyone says about the music sequencer, how anyone can create a song easily and quickly. Don't feel bad if it doesn't sound so good when you are done. It's not that easy to use. You have to be some what musical, yes anyone can create music in LBP but don't get all upset when a masterpiece doesn't play when your done creating. If you practice not only with the Music Sequencer but with learning music also, you'll get good at writing music, that takes patience and years of playing.
I just thought I'd add that for people who don't understand why the music they create doesn't sound like a hit when they hear it, practice, practice and more practice.

Anyway I think I'll wait till I get a couple more songs made before I release a level containing the music. If things keep up maybe I will be able to finish those songs lol.

Very very good point. Not only do I always have friends trying to join on the network I also have friends that call me and ask to join. Even though it is nice not having them bug me all night, I do miss em.

I totally here you though, when you just want that one hour to be left alone so you can concentrate on what your doing. Mainly for menu hate it when people don't have a Bluetooth and you have to type everything. If they have a question you can't be rude and not reply, you end up sitting there typing out an answer that doesn't even fit in the bubble. Agh the good ole days, times long forgotten lol.

Hmm well I been working on alot which is as follows:

1) A space side-scrolling shooter inspired by Space Megaforce.
2) A platformer based on my lbp1 level, Trail Mix.
3) Space platformer I had since lbp1...Might be used to make a Kinetic Crisis remake.
4) My fave one to work on now is this town Ive been building. Has no gameplay at all lol but everything is scaled to size and detailed. Its more of a set-piece level. Even though there is no gameplay its just fun to be able to build away.

This downtime has given me the perfect opportunity to get lots of work put in on my over 100 unfinished levels (no exagerration), but unfortunatly I procastinate a lot, lol, which explains why I have so many unfinished in the first place. ><

I've spent more time training than actually creating. Since PSN is down I need to keep skill level at a constant plus before it went down I was going to clear Unknown Shrine, Death by Chocolate <<very hard>>, Surasa Mines <<very hard>>, and a couple other levels I had been working on clearing.

But of the little creating I have put in I've mainly been working on my Sweetycake's Monorail <<hard>> (an entire level based on the grab cake rail riding seen in Victoria's level, except a more extreme difficulty level), Remora: The Upside Down Castle <<very hard>>, G-Spot <<very hard>> (a 0 gravity extreme level), Lunatic Princess <<very hard>>, CAT!! 2 <<hard>> (long awaited sequal to my most successful level ever), and A Unicorn's Secret <<very hard>> (the 2nd level in the Secret series).

I try to keep the amount of levels I work on at any one time to a minimum. It would be impossible to work on the over 100 unfinished (most started in LBP1) levels at once and too hectic to keep track of.

Geesh I thought my twenty levels was a lot. Seems your minimum is twenty! lol. Good luck, at least time is something that is not a problem right now.

I've been working on a Spider-Man sackbot for my level series "The Amazing Spider-Man" Based of a combination of various cartoons and the original comics from the 6o's on up as well as some of my own ideas. Besides that, I've made a J.Jonah Jameson costume and a Mysterio costume and plan on making many other characters including the kingpin, the sandman, electro, kraven, venom, the hobgoblin, the vulture, the lizard, betty brant, gwen stacy, the osborns, dr.conners, flash tompson,a doc ock sackbot, ect as well as enemies such as the spider slayers as soon as i can get online and get the neccessarry dlc. I've also been thinking more about my group project, Project Suma and will probably put some dialoge up for voice acting auditions soon. Besides that, I have been thinking of starting some of the level designs/art for that project, a space oddessy project, as well as a topdown game and a fast food survival challenge.2011-05-05 04:28:00

Ive been finishing off my platform level thats set on a space port.

Ya, i know it doesn't sound original, but with the added deathless 4 player teleporters and a bit of bombing action
added to it with a different look (not dark and rusty like Dead Space but a more brand new clean look and smell)

Its taking me about 5 weeks to complete.

Still stuck on a title though, and the choice of Level music.

I just had a thought... I wonder if when we go back online there is going to be a huge amount of Easter themed
levels getting published.
Afterall, the Network went down a few days before and people might have planned to publish on the Good Friday.

I thought about making a very hard Easter level, but then considering i'm a rabbit in LBP everyone would associate me with Easter and I would never hear the end of it. -_-

I polished off a survival level based on my Jumper level. A lot of people asked me to make the survival room in my Jumper level its own level, so I did.

I discovered a really cool glitch/effect for costumes. I created some cool costumes using it, like a neat looking sphere that I walk around in with electric currents. I'll post a picture if I find the time.

And, I've also been pretty productive on my remake of my Dream Catcher level. It will definitely feature some fun and unique visuals that people haven't seen anywhere else. But I still have a couple of months before it will be done.

So, I've actually been pretty productive overall.

EDIT: Here's a couple of pics from some of the effects from my Dream Catcher level. They don't look that great - but you have to consider that everything is in "motion" when you see it in Play.

This is the "Dream Queen". In the level it has a really neat blurred motion effect over everything which causes the background to have an interesting cascading effect. Hard to explain.

And this is the new "Shadow King". (In the series, he is a Dream Titan - who are powerful creatures within the dream world). Again, not the greatest picture cause in Play, lights are shooting up, and everything is in motion.

That's the idea anyway.

Anyone else have any pics of what they are working on - or finished with, but waiting to publish?

i started making my version of little red riding hood which is coming along well but also using the time to revive and finish of some of my existing levels. I plan on making my levels using one ''powerup'' at a time experimenting with all of the uses of say the creatinator instead of cramming it all into one mess of a level. Its working well and i have many fresh ideas.
Below are some level pictures from 2 levels i have been working on.

I have been in create mode more than ever now that psn is down. Here are a few things I'm ready to show. Some of this stuff will look slightly different when the levels are published.
This one is the first level of a seven or eight level series that takes place in hell. I started working on the story and art style over a year ago and now I'm finally starting to finish building stuff in the game so I'm happy about that. I have some really cool level ideas for this series and I can't wait to build them. This level is not finished yet.

Cool Blue 3 - Bright Ideas. It's a pointless platformer full of glitched objects that are a part of the platforming and a whole bunch of cool looking blue stuff. It's about 1/4 th finished.

This is a level I just finished called ~just a thing~ In it, you see a light show that is perfectly synced to a song made by brianscohen in lbp. It's ready to be published but I might polish it a bit more.

I've been revamping my old lbp1 level called "Super Afro Samurai Monkeys!" I've played the original lbp1 backup level today and noticed I've made such a huuuuuge difference to the old one.

I'm mainly ironing things out at the moment making it all neat and tidy for when PSN is back.

I've dabbled in creating on and off during the PSN downtime, but I find it difficult to really get into it while not connected. I'm not sure why, but I feel the need to be connected to my peers, even if they're not even in create mode with me. Perhaps I should try to overcome this and work on some of the dozens of projects I have on the go.2011-05-12 05:33:00

I finished the first level of A Wizard Did it, along with the world map and the key level.
http://i55.tinypic.com/fkmltw.jpg
Basically, in A Wizard Did It, you play as a wizard. I wont spoil the story for you but I'm reaching down tho fantasy roots here. Theres lots of fantasy-style humor and humorous characters, ranging from frat-boy White Knights to your own peers and others.
http://i55.tinypic.com/256qtjo.jpg
http://i56.tinypic.com/157oec9.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/xfu5c9.jpg
Your character has five spellbooks that each have three spells. You can switch between spellbooks and use the buttons for the spells. Each spellbook's spells operate on the same principle but with different effects- For instance, triangle with the Fire book equipped with unleash a flamethrower-like torrent, with the Ice book equipped it will emit a cone of freezing blizzard air, and doing it with the Wind book will unleashe a conical tornado that con throw objects around. Theres an area spell, the ones I just mentioned, a projectile that goes further and does more damage, but cant be cast as quickly, and a local spell that emits around you. This is the only spell that lets you move while casting.
http://i53.tinypic.com/szdis0.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/8wlz.jpg
They all have unique effects that can interact with their environment- For instance, the Ice projectile is an icicle that can stick to walls and provide you with a platform, allowing you to scale very tall obstacles, while the Blink spell operates similar to short-range teleportation. Still yet wind spells can turn cranks, move objects too heavy for you to manipulate, and throw enemies backwards, while acid spells can erode gunk from machinery and fire spells can burn ropes and melt ice. The platformaing and puzzle potential is immense and its not something I'm letting go to waste.
http://i53.tinypic.com/29nwin9.jpg
http://i51.tinypic.com/utrt0.jpg
There are lots of enemies as well, from hippie elves with bows, nerdy evil mages who can resurrect zombies, huge cyclops ogres, and angsty vampires who insist the world simply doesnt "get" them. I'm taking a lighthearted approach to the game, in stark contrast to my previous entries that have been rather serious and overbearing from a plot perspective.

But not everything is out to kill you. There are friendly NPCs you'll meet out there too, specifically a certain wandering merchant totally not looking to pawn his overpriced goods off on you. Which brings me to items, there are five kinds, and you switch them like you do spellbooks. These will be quick access though, requiring only a push of a button to equip and use them on yourself in a time of need. Health potions, mana potions, magic mushrooms, chicken, and Runes of Invulnerability all make up the items you can use, and they all do something different.
http://i53.tinypic.com/2ns58wo.jpg
Boy, dont those guys look familiar? WHoever can tell me who these characters are first get some thanks!

In addition there is a world map you will be returned to at the end of each level, and putting in the sticker for the latest level you have beaten will open the path to that area. I did my best to compensate for the fact that this system makes you go back to the first zone on the map each time you spawn by making the map entertaining to look at, so its not a bother to scroll across it.

Then theres the key level, where if, for some reason, when you beat the level you didnt get the level key, you can go in and get the key by putting the sticker up. I foresaw this as being an issue as soon as I realized that people would finish the level before I could get the next chapter up and thus while they would get the unlock sticker, there would be no key to get, so rather than force them to play the level a second time to get the key, tehres this little level where you can just put the sticker you have and get any key you have earned thus far.

Everything else I have made can be considered a precursor that has built up to this. Solace was a foray into logic, and where a lot of my knowledge regarding that was built. LOtW was my foray into advanced sackbotics, and a huge success ion that regard. Crimson Alnce was for physics and projectiles. This game- I dont say level, because this will transcend being a mere level- will bring everything I know about creating into one massive sidescrolling adventure that will take hours to fully complete from start to finish.

Oh, and you can select if you want to be a boy or a girl, and this will affect things in the game, particularly... Well, I won't spoil it for you.

I'll edit some pictures in in a moment.

I've been messing around with the film cameras for a bit but I actuall haven't been on that much. Instead I've been doing quite a lot of revision for my exams which are within the next few weeks and with the nice weather in southern England quite a lot of kayaking and coaching. Talking of which I'm still working on my kayaking level and may have that up once the breakup is over. I also had a brain wave and I think I have found a rudimentary path finding system but I need to get around to fixing up the logic of that logic which will involve a good inspection of rtm's blog.2011-05-12 22:56:00

i started on a new level last night, it may sound dull but its based on a sorting office in which u need to sort sackbots for postage. The sorting is done in a way such as mind control in the story levels. Any ideas or comments are most welcome as i am now in the final stages of making this level =D

Is the one on the very right a Red Mage (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/1288/83686-70788-red-mage_large.PNG)? :o At first, I was reminded of Freya Crescent (http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/5/5c/Freya_Crescent_character.jpg), but I wasn't sure if that was it.

A few more pics cause I'm bored. I posted a couple of pics in this thread about my Dream Catcher level - here are a couple of more.

Here is a pic of a character/being from my Dream Catcher level - I remade him for LBP2. His name is "Lord Visionary". There are two main characters in the Dream World - the Dream Queen, who wants you to perform a task for her - find the Dreaming Tree and pick a fruit from it and bring it back to her. Lord Visionary will stop at nothing to stop you or destroy - even if that means destroying the fabric of the Dream Universe itself.

Here he is. (In the game, all those tentacles are moving).

The level is obviously very abstract - it is a Dreamscape after all. Here is another pic - if you look closely, you can see I posed next to him.

Here is the opening scene of the level. You arrive at the Castle. A powerful Wizard has summoned you to perform the dreaded task of watching the Dream Macine. He has one warning. . . DON'T FALL ASLEEP. Hope nothing goes wrong.

This level probably won't be out till July or so. So much work to do - trying not to let it weigh too heavily on me to get it done. We'll see.

I made this:

It's a remake of a scene in this (frame at 1:00):

And it's gonna be my new profile image for LBP.

Working on a vertical shooter, based off a classic from my childhood. The amount of logic that is piling up is ridiculous. Probably would have abandoned the project if not for the PSN downtime; I get so easily distracted, you see. Made two custom sound tracks for this level yesterday and never before felt more frustrated at not being able to share them with friends.

Postal stamp size preview is the third pic from the left in my sig. Video shows the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mzGeQo38x) that is the source of the inspiration.

Some guys here make their own background... How the hell do you do that? Is it just some material flattened to the back or something?2011-05-16 11:19:00

I assume they are using the 3D glitch to put/create objects on the background. I think its a fun idea. It would be a fun contest, but I doubt an official contest would ever be done using a glitch.

Your level sounds quite interesting!

As for mine, I recently published a Teaser Trailer. It introduces the set up for the story, and shows off one of the new effects. Check it out some time if you get tired of creating and want a short break.

Most of which are actually based off of the original Final Fantasy characters.
