RPG side-scroller or top-down?
Archive: 12 posts
hey everyone, i was planning on making an rpg level after i finish the level im currently working on.... however b4 i start i need to decide wether i should make it a side scroller or a top down. Now, i know that most of you are going to say that rpgs need to be top-down in order to allow for exploration and proper battle systems ect. However, im really good at making 3d layer environmets, to the point where i feel like making a top down will ruin the feeling of being in a "oblivion" style town. I would plan on working in almost all the possible layers, (60 visible layers are w.e it may be) in order to capture the feeling of roaming towns. With this i would plan to implement dif towns as "sub levels" and have a quest system using sticker switches and such. MAybe even stack environments on top of eachother to allow for bigger towns, that have a small traveling time when u reach the ends of the lvl or to enter buildings. For the battling system i could use right analog crosshair aiming to allow for many degrees of shooting. Do you guys think this culd be pulled off? And if so would you enjoy it more then a top-down? And i am i the only one thats a little bit turned off by top-down environments compared to something you could make using 3d layer glitch? Any input would be awesome thx | 2011-05-04 02:07:00 Author: ShadowTyphoon Posts: 80 |
I agree, But ive found it easier, If you do it right to make top down buildings, towns. With 3-D which means you can enter every building, etc. so i'd love to help. i got a lot on my schedule, but i'd fit some time in for this. sounds awesome. | 2011-05-04 02:11:00 Author: jgsstl Posts: 95 |
So basically a 3D Oblivion-style title? I was actually exploring 3D for my game--of course my battles arent in full 3D so i think it would be interesting to see if you cold pull this off. I do tire of top-down rpgs--nothing wrong with them, i just feel something like this would be more interesting. With that said, i think this would be more enjoyable not being top-down. It should be able to be pulled off--but i haven't had a chance to experiment with it. I was thinking about a 3D Resident Evil title, but i have been really busy with CB so i put that project off a bit. I think it depends on what style of combat you want. Personally i think swords and arrows would be nice in 3D as opposed to top down. Turnbased would be pretty complex getting all the huds and damage numbers in full 3D--though still possible theoretically. I say go for it | 2011-05-04 04:23:00 Author: Rpg Maker Posts: 877 |
I say top down! If that matters, but I do agree with a few things RPG Maker said.. Personally I prefer TD for several reasons, but since you are used to 3D i would think TD would be more familiar. Plus its just new and more hip! Also your sky city looks amazing! And Xyphas your pics in LBP show interesting stuff too! | 2011-05-04 05:02:00 Author: Dortr Posts: 548 |
1: Does it have a separate battle area or battle system? If so, then a side scroller may be the system of choice. If not, then top down is the way to go. 2: If you want to have full backgrounds that have objects and complexity, then do not do it. Your level(s) will be hogging incredible amounts of thermo. Best choice to go for TD. | 2011-05-04 14:57:00 Author: Brian_Istenes Posts: 151 |
I don't see any reason why RPG's should be top down. Old school shooters have top-down and side-scrolling variants, too. You just have to adapt your environment to still allow exploring: a flat town might be boring to explore in side-view, but if it's set against a mountainside with steps and slides it becomes a lot more interesting. And the advantage of side-scrolling is that you get more character detail out of your sackbots. | 2011-05-04 17:28:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |
Or mix in both... | 2011-05-05 01:06:00 Author: jgsstl Posts: 95 |
I think top-down offers more versatility, but I've seen both done so far. If I were to do one, I'd be tempted to go top-down, but spin the camera into a 3/4 view. | 2011-05-05 22:41:00 Author: Thegide Posts: 1465 |
So your level's going to be in 3d? If so, I have a 3d cam that can rotate. So far, I haven't seen anyone else pull this off. I have the camera used in my level Mechamorphosis, so check it out and see if it would work for your level. | 2011-05-07 03:03:00 Author: Joey9898 Posts: 131 |
i said 3d layer not 3d camera. I was the first to make the 3d cam rotate btw. check the dates | 2011-05-08 02:00:00 Author: ShadowTyphoon Posts: 80 |
Do whatever you're best at or is the most innovative. I was the first to make the 3d cam rotate btw. check the dates I doubt it given it was first made in the beta. | 2011-05-08 19:20:00 Author: Ayneh Posts: 2454 |
The cam was made in the beta, not distributed until the full game. However i was the first to release a smoothly rotating function. If you dont have any lvls with publish dates previous to mine, then you have no arguement. | 2011-05-09 03:54:00 Author: ShadowTyphoon Posts: 80 |
