Word filter

Archive: 14 posts

I was just wondering that the word filter is a bit odd.
I really found funny that the words
B-word and
D-word
are filtered.
As an Italian, they seem to me pretty common stuff
As for the B word...there's a comic (http://bit.ly/iHW41h), a kind of weapon (http://bit.ly/m3cKRD), and various other stuff
For the D word there is a band (http://bit.ly/8VKjuQ), a videogame (http://bit.ly/iIVUYC), and stuff
(I had to use shortened links here because those words were used even in the URLs)
Well, the thing is that it's a bit awkward that if I want to talk about this stuff I have to find a way to bypass the filter while not saying anything bad.
I think that those word used towards a user should lead to a direct ban, but they shouldn't be filtered, because we're on the edge of th "HAPP ENED" of LBPian memory

This is an international site though, maybe in Italy they're commonplace, but elsewhere might see differently. I can see your point, but until LBP gets a new PEGI rating this site kinda has to abide by it's rules also.

http://www.vegassmart.com/images/tours/hoover-dam.jpg is a funny one though. I can't see how http://www.vegassmart.com/images/tours/hoover-dam.jpg is any worse than 'crap', but 'crap' goes through just fine.

For the record, bad language doesn't offend me in the slightness unless it's used against me (obviously lol.)

EDIT:
but 'crap' goes through just fine.

Nice, real nice. Just picture the image these words plant in your head. Pretty huh?

I can understand the B word but Dam ned is weird because like Mr_T-Shirt said "crap" is a worse word than dam ned.2011-05-03 11:00:00

Not in a religious ppoint of view.
(Sometimes.)

Tho, you can alwys just say "Darn" or "Dang" and not offend anyone instead, I mean, its not really that much effort, heck, it even saves a few letters sometimes.
I mean, its pretty easy finding or making words to express what you mean without offending anyone as well, so there's always that option.

Well, CC would probably reluctant to update the word filters based on one person's "acceptable use" of those words. The problem is, if you open them up to be non-filtered, they'll just be used with their negative connotation and cause more trouble than they're worth.

Yes, in their non-negative context the words have several definitions(i.e. an illegitimate child, to condemn or curse,) but those definitions would be used far less frequently than their negative meanings.

And just because they're used elsewhere in some other fashion does not mean they are acceptable to be used everywhere.

Posted my schm0: The problem is, if you open them up to be non-filtered, they'll just be used with their negative connotation and cause more trouble than they're worth. I agree. I'm not a cursor myself, I mean I use http://www.vegassmart.com/images/tours/hoover-dam.jpgit, http://www.vegassmart.com/images/tours/hoover-dam.jpg, ***, and hell but for the most part try and stay away from the mega words2011-05-03 20:49:00

I personally don't have a problem with the way it's moderated.

At least it's not like the PSN chat.

I can't tell my friends,
"I can't get connection because my engine isn't working."
(I can't get c************ because my en**** isn't working.)

or,

"I'm gonna go bite some crackers I got from the kitchen."
(I'm gonna go **** some ******* I got from the kitchen.)

Strangely, I find more words filtered on this site than in LBP itself.

For example, this guy here...

http://www.junglewalk.com/animal-pictures/201/Donkey-2123.jpg

...is not censored in LBP.

I would think that seeing as this is a fansite, we would attempt to retain the same language filter as used by the game?

So, I went ahead and cleaned up some of the posts in here. While I understand the intention of the thread, you're still breaking the rules when you bypass the filter.

I'm going to let everyone slide as the content of the thread can be understood without bypassing the filter.

Any subsequent bypassing will result in a warning and/or infraction. Rules are rules, after all.

The issue of the language filter has come up several times before, see these threads...

Better Censors (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=16822-Better-Censors)
Unreasonable wordfilter (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=18024-Unreasonable-wordfilter)
Petition to Uncensor a Word (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=26058-Petition-to-Uncensor-a-Word)

...the net result being that if you're using the word in an inoffensive sense, you ought to be able to find reasonable synonyms, and if you're using it in an offensive sense, you shouldn't be.

I would think that seeing as this is a fansite, we would attempt to retain the same language filter as used by the game?

Fine, you can have your donkey synonym, but only if we take away all the LBP-censored (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=26378-LBP-In-Game-Censorship-List) ones including: "happened", "computer", "analog", "engine", and "connector". Deal?

Argh! My ears are bleeding! Aya, wash your mouth with soap this instant!

If Mm sees fit to censor those due to regional slang, I could build a rational argument for doing the same here. But, I'm selfish and having to insert random punctuation into sentences annoys the computer out of me, so I'll concede on this

How about we use the same language filter as LBP, but get rid of the ridiculous filters? LBP is rated 7+ and LBPC is rated 13+, so why do we filter more words? And, how would I go about advertising a level I made using these words?
"Hey, check out my level, it's called '**** you, ***!'."
How would they know what to search for?
