Portal 1 or Portal 2, maybe neither.

Archive: 38 posts

I haven't played any of the portal games and would like to. Do you think I should buy portal 1 first or just go to 2. Is the game worth it? Does it have high replay value?

I'd rather just buy 2 and start playing but if one is recommended I'll get that first.

Can someone please respond with a gold answer on what and why I should get this game. I guess sell it to me. Be a cars salesman and really sell me on some good points.

Plus I want a game with steam. What exactly does steam do that the ps store and the xmb can't do.
Thanks for any answers.

Well steam is basically the PSN and XBOX Live of the PC. It's what almost all of the PC games use to run their online services, and in my opinion, it is a very well-run service. So I wouldn't really be asking what they can and can't do.2011-05-01 02:48:00

This really was a question on if I should get the game itself. Ya I asked what steam does. But what I dont get is why use steam when you can just use ps3 services. Anyway that not the real question. I really am debating if portal is a great game. It looks fun but I want some peoples opinions. So if you have it and would like to tell me what you like about it, why you think or don't think it is a great game. Thanks

I say Both. You can get The Orange Box for pretty cheap now a days. 5 games, one box, one low price, you can't go wrong.

If you can't afford Portal 2 at the moment, play the first one and see if you like it, then once the price comes down a bit, get it.

You must have read stuff already but, in my opinion, Portal 2 is one of the greatest games not just of this era, but ever. It's worth every penny.

With me I would like to just go straight to Portal 2. The reason why is I got some things coming up that require all my money. So I have the money to buy it now then no game for a while. I just wonder if I'll be missing out by skipping 1, in regards to the story. For instance I had friends that played God of War 3 and didn't like it, because they never played the first two and they didn't get why number 3 was so important.

The first game is free buddy it's just not on PS3 and no, you won't miss out on much story wise.

All you need to know really is that Chell defeats GLaDOS and makes it outside but her unconscious body is drug back in to the facility by a robot.

What do you mean by free. Like I don't have to pay "free" or something else.

Now that's not nice, he's asking your opinion, not to spoil the game, what if he can get both later?
You just spoiled, didn't even used a spoiler for anyone else that hadn't played it...

Also, i believe Portal was just free for a limited time only, not anymore, unless you'd like to link to where he can get it for free legally.

Yeah, it came free when I installed Steam, but it seems like it didn't come free for everyone.

I wouldn't say it was crucial for the enjoyment of playing the game, but it would certainly help a little bit in understanding the story/references to the first game.

It was free, now it is not. According to VALVe, "Portal is Free (Well, it was - now it's just a good deal)."

Just a few things.

You can download a demo of Portal 1 from Steam.

There's a bundle of Portal 1 & 2 on Steam thats only slightly more expensive than just portal 2 on its own and a little cheaper than buying them seperate.

All PS3 versions of Portal 2 include a code to get a free copy of Portal 2 from Steam.

I'd go for the Orange Box. It's very cheap now, includes portal 1 and all the other games on it are excellent too.2011-05-01 17:27:00

I'd say get Portal 1 first - It's dead cheap and included in the Orange Box - I mean, here in the UK you could get it for around a tenner. It'll give you a taste for what the 2nd game is like, in terms of gameplay methods, as well as the backstory to the game, so if you play Portal 2, you'll be able to understand and appreciate it properly.

So get Portal 1 first, and see if you like it or not. If you do - I'm sure you'll agree the 2nd is well worth a buy. If you don't like it, well, you wouldn't have spent much money, and you don't have to buy 2. Although, I somehow doubt you won't like the 2nd - but they're both well worth a play!

You should by Portal too. Not just to understand the story etc, but because it is a wonderful game too. And you get a lot more out of the sequel after playing it. You WILL play Portal after Portal 2 if you buy 2 first. Don't make yourself play the sequel first.2011-05-01 18:09:00

Ok so I went to gamestop to grab the orange box. Sold out. So I called around sold out everywhere. I ended up buying portal 2. The reason why was because I traded in monopoly which I never even played on the ps3. Try gave me 36 bucks just for that. Then they said if I buy portal 2 today I get a 20 discount offs of it. Then on top of that if I put the trade toward portal 2 I get another 5 bucks. So I went in there with a game that I paid 15 dollars for and walked out with paying only 2 bucks for a portal 2 brand new. I'd be stupid to pass that up.

So I guess I am going straight into portal 2.

Now if someone has a few minutes please walk me through what happened in portal 1. It doesn't have to be everything just the things that may matter in number 2. Like what am I, why am I here, stuff like that include spoiler alerts just in case someone enters the thread and wants to play portal 1. Thanks so much for all the help. I wish I could have played portal 1 but I can't wait I know I'm going to put in portal 2 tonight.

Ok I think I got it, thanks. One thing though, probably a stupid question. Are playing a human or a bot of some sort. And also why are you even there in the first place or do we not know that yet until I'll play two.

You play as Chell in Portal one - same character that plays in Portal 2.

She's a test subject. That's about all you know in Portal 1.

^That.

Like I said, it WAS, but last time I checked, it wasn't anymore.
I know because I myself am one of the ones that managed to get it for free while it was still free.

Wowowowwo, what?!
They're STILL sold out?

About, um dunno, 3 months ago same thing happened to me, was gonna buy The Orange Box from Gamestop and all sold out.
Now either they got lazy suppliers, they really need to report they need more of those, or there's some reason they haven't had a re-supply of them in such a long time.

Depends what it's on. PC - absolutely. TF2 is worth the admission alone, let alone the fantastic HL games.
360 - Yeah, the games run well and I'd imagine some people must play TF2.
PS3 - Probably - but it wasn't made by valve so it doesn't run as well as the other versions has never had any updates. The half life series is still fantastic though, so if this is the only version you can get I'd say get it for under a tenner. Fantastic price. Just don't expect many to be playing TF2.

Ok so I've been playing Portal 2 on and off for a couple days now. Wow what a great game, I have some questions.

1. How long does it take the average person to finish? That's saying you don't get stuck forever on a puzzle.

2. Has anyone gotten to play co op? Is that as fun as single player and how many hours of gameplay will I get.

3. DLC anyone know if there is gonna be any, and what will it be?

4. Who else thinks this is one of the greatest games ever?

It sucks I couldn't get my hands on the first portal but that's ok I'm enjoying Portal 2 very much. When I am done with this I will look around for the orange box again. It's sold out everywhere except online. I have to wait a couple weeks to order it.

I love how it makes me have to think. It is one of the best puzzle games of all time. Is Portal 1 better than Portal 2 in your eyes.

1. 10 hours first run 6 hours second run.

2. About 4 hours with partner that had played most of the maps. Chambers that neither of us had played took much longer.

Em, about 7 - 20 hrs.
( 7 being relatively fast, 20 being if you get stuck in every puzzle for a while. )

So about this gen game's story length.

2. Has anyone gotten to play co op? Is that as fun as single player and how many hours of gameplay will I get.

Due to PSN being down, I haven't been able to play Co -op on PS3, and since I got it once PSN was down, I haven't been able to link my steam acc with my PS3 acc to play it on Pc, so sadly, no, but I do look forward to it. ;p

3. DLC anyone know if there is gonna be any, and what will it be?
Yep, its already announced on the main Portal 2 thread, gonna have challenge maps for SP and MP, few other extra maps for both modes, and add leaderboards if I'm not mistaking.

Another question. Does portal 1 have trophies. Also how long would it take to play portal 1 on my computer. I wanna get it but don't like gaming from my computer. The orange box is sold out everywhere. The reason I ask about trophies is if they have them on ps3 for portal then I'd wait until I find the orange box.2011-05-07 22:58:00

Unfortunately I started number 2 and am over half done. I looked everywhere and called everywhere and they are all sold out. It was gonna take three weeks to get portal in the mail. So I went up to game stop to trade in a game and put the money toward LA Noire. I had a cheap *** game and thought I'd get a few bucks but then the girl offered me portal 2 at a great discount, I couldn't get pass up the deal. I ended paying a few bucks out of pocket. I brought it home and tried not to play it but I couldn't resist. Plus the fact that I wouldn't be able to play portal 1 for about a month. So I looked at tons and tons of portal YouTube videos for a couple days. I got to know the start and watched tons of gameplay. After I did all that I started to play portal 2. I have a good understanding of what portal 2 is based on. There were a few times I think if I would have played portal 1 I wouldn't be as confused but doing ok. I never spent more than 10 min on a puzzle, about 60 or 70% done with the game. Once I get the orange box I plan on playing portal 1 and 2 back to back to get the full experience. I love this game lastnight the story took me by suprise. I won't say anything because of spoilers but if you've played it you know what I'm talking about.

I really can't wait to get my hands on some co-op. It looks so fun. Also the DLC will be fun.

I just want to save people time and say now I really can't play Portal on my computer. After looking at the specs of my computer I realized I may not have a good experience. Also I'd much rather sit in my massage recliner and play it on ps3. That's why I asked how long it is. I almost took the chance and bought it today, especially after you all said it's only a few hours long. But I'm gonna wait.

If your coming here trying to do some research to decide if you want this game just STOP! Go get it now. I thinks it's still 20$ off. The only things is if you haven't played the original Portal I highly reccommend playing that first like gigglecrab said. Or at least watching some videos so you know what's going on. Puzzle games are not my cup of tea but this one is unlike anything I've ever played, not just compared to puzzlers but also to any game type. More games need to be like this. I give it a 10/10. If you pick
It up and play the first few levels and say this isn't for me, please just keep playing at least through the first set of tests. I promise you'll be satisfied you stuck with it. I don't think you want to put it down but you never know it does get extremely hard at points. I'm good with this kind of thinking so I didn't really have a problem. But I can see how some people would wanna give up. I say this because I had my friend do a test, an hour of playing and he didn't come anywhere near the solution. I'm sure those levels will come for me later in the game.

Have fun and enjoy this great game. Thanks to anyone who answered any of my questions, you help made my decision that much easier.

I'd like on ask if anyone got a platinum trophy but I forgot that'd be impossible with the network down, getting the co op trophies.
So I'll ask this anybody get all the single player trophies yet. It seems like a really easy game to get a platinum, you'd probably just have to play a couple times through.
IfI you did get all the single player trophies was it easy? Is there one trophy you remember being difficult, can you leave some tips that maybe would make it easier for us to get that trophy. Please don't forget SPOLER ALERT if needed.

Im glad your getting through the sequel alirhgt without playing the first game Although, I do reccomend getting the first game, because the story is not something you want to miss.

Portal 1 took me about 5 hours, and the boss at the end is really easy Its the last chamber that makes it long... Took me forever! D:

Wow I just completed Portal 2. I was not expecting it to be that good. I knew it's be a great game but it just blew me away. I'd rather not say anything. I think I realize now why people don't talk about it much. The littlest slip with words can ruin the entire game. So I'll shut my mouth now and let everyone who hasn't played it enjoy it. I'm starting another portal thread to talk about the story. I don't understand some of the stuff that went on.2011-05-10 03:13:00

Hey guys now that Pam is back up and I started to play Portal 2 I'd to play it with some new people soon. If you'd like add me. My steam and Psn account name are METALPUNKS. So add me if you'd like or send me your user name so I can add you.

Also I am trying to get a couple trophies I could probably use help with while we are playing co op.

I have a question before I go. Is there anyway to set up saves for a scheduled time. I heard there was but cannot find the option. If you could tell me how to find that id be more than thankful.
