The Sony Xperia PLAY

Archive: 19 posts

So I was browsing around Sony.com and came across a phone, that's a PSP. It's called the Sony Experia PLAY. It's supposed to come out for Verizon this spring and T-Mobile for UK. You can see the official page for it here (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=10151&langId=-1&catalogId=10551&categoryId=8198552921644515844&N=4294953720&Name=Sony%20Ericsson%20Phones&SR=sensorylay:xperia_play:ss&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sony.com%2Findex.php).

Here's a picture of it compared to the PSP go:

Here's a video put together by Gizmo showing it's features:

Now time for discussion questions. Not much info is given about it's gaming, all it says is that it is "Playstation Certified." Does this mean it will be able to play PSP games, or will it be a completely new "console"? Can we expect LBP to come out for it (probably not)?

Discuss!

If I'm honest, it'll probably end up a bit like *Cough!*

*Cough!*
Yup.
But! Seeing as it's coming from Sony, I guess it could be good.

So like a PSP phone? Call me sceptical but I'd rather phones and gaming stayed seperate except only in extraordinary circumstances (e.g.SNAKE) 2011-04-30 20:19:00

I might get it. I'm looking to get a cell phone, and I want an android. It'll depend on prices though. XD2011-05-02 02:45:00

I didn't realise this wasn't really well known about already? That wasn't a sentence, but I think you get what I mean

Several Xperia Phones exist with the same side-sliding design, but it is really similar to the PSP Go as well:

I doubt it would be that much. You need to remember that it's a cell phone. They make their money from the contract.

Exactly. So it'll be about $100 up front and an additional $100 every month.

Oh yeah, you guys havent heard of this? This was the PSP Phone everyone was talking about, then rapidly quited down. It's going to have individual games, and I'm not sure if it'll have access to the full PS store. It's also not marketed under Playstation (doesnt have to the logo on it), so the say its 'PS certified'.
I'm sure itll be around $2-250. I hope it plays other apps too not just by Sony, unlike the stupid PSP.
I want Doodle jump and Angry bird w/out Custom PSP firmware!

It's an android phone (Gingerbread / 2.3 I think), should have access to everything on the Android Marketplace as well as games specifically made for the device. Angry Birds should be no problem 2011-05-03 09:04:00

Apparently it will come pre installed with a few different games including Crash Bandicoot 1.2011-05-03 09:30:00

If it can't load UMDs, I don't want it. Why the heck would I want to repurchase my game library in digital download format? (Especially when a good quarter or more of them are used copies?)2011-05-04 15:51:00

I knew about this for a long time. The only neat fact is that it's the first PlayStation device with two thumb-stick like things.2011-05-05 03:01:00

Yeah I've known about it for awhile now too but no it's the NGP that has the real thumbsticks not the Xperia play. If you look at the pictures this only has a control pad, some strange touch feature-like pads in the middle, and maybe another touch screen pair on the actual screen.

That's what I meant when I said 'two thumb-stick like things'.
