Are there any drawbacks to publishing a level (movie) with sublinks?

Archive: 5 posts

I have been vaguely reading about problems some people have with loading sublinked levels, but I don't know any details about it, so I was wondering if that is true at all?

If yes, would a preferred method of publishing a movie, which consists of more parts, be just to publish each part of the movie as a separate (selectable and viewable) level? Although that is a bit awkward and unpractical, since all three parts are published at the same time, and should be viewed/rated as such. Any suggestion regarding this matter?

Publishing a level alone has the possiblity's of recieving the message "failed to load level". This depends on the complexitty of the level and how many players are trying to play it at the same time. Though, you asked about sub links, which they work 50% of the time. When your alone, they work about 95% of the time just fine, but when with friends say 2-4 players, the risks of those players disconnecting from the host or failing to the load the level are greatly increased.

My advice would to be to use the link if neccessary. If you can avoid it, do so, but don't avoid it if it'll ruin the quality of the movie.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for your reply and for clarifying the problems that are generally occurring with level linking.

Yes, I would say that level linking for this particular movie is a must, since it is a movie that is dependant on all three parts for it to be complete. And just watching one part of the movie would be kind of meaningless (unless players willingly quit).

So I am still faced with the dilemma whether to publish other movie parts as linked sub levels or linked separately published levels. The advantage of the latter option is that even if in linking process players get kicked out, they can easily select the second part of the movie from the creator’s earth and just continue from there. But the disadvantage is that the movie is basically condemned to a so-so statistic (which would probably lead to 0 chances for cool pages and to bad positioning regarding other search criteria).

Basically if, let’s say, people watch a three part movie published as a separate levels, they will most likely rate only one of those levels. (Not many players will have patience to rate all three linked parts, nor would that be expected from them, but due to this, the ratings would be diluted, and basically the movie would have a rather average statistics, which would result in a possibly very low play ratio.)

On the other hand, by posting all three parts as one sub-linked level, the statistics would be much better and the movie would probably be viewed more times, but then some players would have problems with being disconnected while loading the sub-linked parts of the movie…. :/

As I understand it now, there are only those two alternatives, and both are, unfortunately, problematic… Or am I maybe missing some other solution?

Ok, well you seem to have thought out everything that needs to be taken into consdieration.

Dispite that, the best option I see for any movie creator is to post each part of the movie in sections as part 1, part 2 and part 3, perhaps make them fade out so the ending of each part doesn't seem cut off. Then, when each are seperatly publishised, connect them via level link.

This way, when a player watches the beginning of any part, they are automaticlly linked to the next part with a fade in the middle of each section so each part doesn't seem cut off and should the player disconnect, they have the option to watch from the section they missed. They also have the ability to re-watch a section should they choose to for entertainment or to show friends.

So, my advice is to link them all and publish seperately, therefore you have covered all possible problems and therefore maximizing the the outcome in which players will re-watch and tell friends. If one part made cool pages, chances are that the other two would either make cool pages too or gain close to the amount of views as the one on cool pages. Same goes for MM picks. If one of your levels is granted Mm picks, your guranteed your future levels will be a success.

Hope this helps, and i'll be sure to look out for your movie when PSN is up.

Thank you once again for your observations and for showing intention to watch the movie. It is finished but still lacks voices and music (which I am depending on PSN friends, so the movie will not be published as soon as PSN goes live). But I will give you a nudge as it is published. BTW, I am familiar with your levels, and thought they were one of better LBP2 user created platformers, though I didn?t manage to play the last one before you removed it, but I am looking forward to your new level; hope it is going well.

Hmm, regarding the approach you recommended, it still leaves the problem that an average player who likes a movie will probably heart and give a happy face to only one of the published parts, no matter the fact that he watched and liked all three parts and movie as a whole, which is not that big of a problem for famous creators, but for new creators that could prove to be a bit problematic, since one can say bye-bye to cool pages if happy faces and hearts are dispersed on three levels and not only on one.

With all this said, that is still probably how I will go at it when I publish the movie, since I don't want to have players constantly kicked out on second or third part?

But then again there is still another possibility. To put on the first part, before it even starts, a selection screen, where the player can choose first, second or third part to play. If first part is chosen, the movie just keeps on going. If the second part is chosen, the first part is skipped, and the second sublevel link automatically starts to load? etc. So this approach would eliminate the necessity to watch the movie from the beginning if you are kicked while loading a sublevel link. And it would only have one level for statistical purposes. Still, if some people are constantly having problems with loading sublevels, the problem would not be solved with this approach.
