I'm confused, is it something old that has been revived, or has it sprung up from some mad, evil genius? Anyway, meow :3 It was an old Japanese meme, which hit America and went viral with the Vocaloid fans. The original NicoNicoDouga (NND for short) video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG5bESZaTQ0)consisted of a cartoon version of Hatsune Miku, who said Nyan throughtout the whole song, the lyrics bouncing behind her. Touhou fans then spoofed it, and others joined the bandwagon. Then, someone (I can't remember who, though) made a MikuMikuDance (MMD) video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugfB7UYiGNI)of her doing a cat/kitty dance to it, and that too went viral. A LOT of MMDs showed up because of that. Later on, someone used a UTAU Vocaloid (I think it's Teto, but I'm not sure; people have other Vocaloids, some fanmade), to make a cat version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EuPsXanYzY) of it for no particular reason (she's an unofficial Vocaloid, so of course people don't use her to make as much music as Miku). Meanwhile, someone on a random forum made Poptart Cat (that was the original name) for avatar purposes. THEN, someone saw it and used it, along with the cat version song to make Nyan Cat (its new name). And thus, a meme was born! P.S. I didn't Google this. I was actually there when the original Nyan video was released, and then when the Nyan cat came out. I'm going by memory (sorry if I got something wrong).
