How To: VERY Low Thermo Holo Designs

Archive: 8 posts

(A Simi-Noob Mini Tutorial)

Hey so most people (like me) probably make holo designs with tons of tiny holo shapes like i use to. Thing is there is a much better, and thermo friendly, way of doing this. First, you need to no that if you sticker holo with black it is not visible in play/preview mode. When grey its a dimmed holo and white is full on.

Now, because I'm away from my PS3 i'll be using MS Paint to make the pictures.

1. Make a Design out of Neon with these stats

Color: White
Brightness: 40-50%

Try to make the design big so you can get a good picture.

Once your done make the background black by setting darkness to 100%
Next, flatten everything with the start menu. It should look something like this:

In honor of the up-and-coming Thor Movie, my design will be a hammer

2. Take a picture of the FLAT (because it looks better) design. Then put it on holo with stats how ever you want but i think these look the best:

Color: Your choice
Brightness: 40-50%
Speed: 0%

Now completely cover the holo with a black sticker. Make sure the sides are covered.
Next put on the sticker of your design and it will be there! Cut it to what ever shape. Rectangles, Squares, and triangles are the best because its invisible anyway.

The green represents holo, the gray represents black stickered holo, and the gray with the design is the finish!

And thats it!

I'm pretty sure there have already been threads about this, but good job on the illustrations. It's also more comprehensive than the others. Nice work, there. 2011-04-27 03:50:00

Yep, this is a great technique for saving thermo on complex holo shapes, especially text. However, be aware that there can be some loss of resolution when dealing with larger shapes, as the image dimensions for snapshots are rather small.2011-04-27 05:12:00

I knew you could do this, but I never put two and two together.
Thanks.

This is an excellent technique for use on holographic HUDs, as holograms, when shrunk to small sizes, tend to go a little crazy when it comes to edge rendering. They may simply turn invisible altoghether and thats even worse...

But with stickers like this you can make a very small hologram with a very complex shape, and the only thing that really eats up the thermometer is the sticker itself (Which isnt big in the first place). Nice job, I was going to do this but instead I'll link to you in my Holographic Hud tutorial!

I use this quite a lot also, never really seen anyone bring it up before, but haven't really looked. I also use it to tweak colours into decorations, as well as treat it like a sticker to get stuff off angle or between planes.

Another thing I have found super useful is overlay several copies set to about 8% and make custom stickers. The low level means there is no shine, but the overlay deepens the colours with pretty nice results.

Most of the lighting effects here are stickered holo

Kind of hard to see, but used to highlight the circle and line of the MGS decoration for the plutonium chamber

Flux capacitor is a sticker and a masked bit of holo.

This is my favourite; an example of a 'masked sticker' 5-10 copied overlays set with low brightness... I think it looks better than the real sticker on many surfaces.

I also used it to make the stop lights and head lights of the car.

In case you're wondering, yes I'm working on something BTTF related...
