Demon Souls PS3 Questions

Archive: 10 posts

Ok, so i've been looking up some cool RPG's to play on the PS3 and I noticed this one called Demon Souls.
I know next to nothing about it and i'm not even sure if there's more than one for the PS3 so it's the one with the flaming red knight thing on the case, idk.. might help

Like i said before, i know next to nothing about the game and what i've seen of it was on Youtube. Though the story seemed like you have to wait a long time between attacks, the online looked very fun for PvP..

Here are my questions:

The online mode, does it contain your story character, a new save or a pre made set?

What Online modes are there?

I've heard some things about red eye, black eye and blue eye.. I have no idea what these are so could someone help me out with those, the meanings and what they are, what they do etc?

I'm not really sure what else to ask consdiering I know very little, so any information provided to me is GREATLY appreciated as i'm thinking about getting this tomorrow.

Many thanks

Demon's Souls is a cracking game... though be warned - it's incredibly difficult. Let your guard down for a second and you'll pay the price.
It's punishingly hard - but this makes it very refreshing. Few games around today are as punishingly hard.

As for online modes - it's a more an offline game with 'online' components.

You can see 'blood stains' where other players have recently died - and then if you 'activate' the blood stain you'll see a 'ghost' of the player going through their final moments. So if you get to a corner and see a load of blood stains, and all of the ghosts are walking around the corner, you'll know there's something that will probably kill you around that corner, meaning you'll be extra carefull.
You can also leave (& read) messages for other players like "Beware of the trap ahead" kind of thing.

There is a "multiplayer" mode - which consists of either entering another players world as a phantom with the intent on killing them (or having them enter your world), or entering someone elses world as a phantom in order to help them kill a demon (or they can enter your world to do the same);
You need to use a rare item to do this, so it only happens once in a while.

I think of the game as purely an offline single player - ignoring most of the online components.

Your character is persistent - though you can create several characters.

I believe the red/black/blue "eyes" are the itmes you use to connect with other people;
Red: Enter their world and try and kill them - if you do you will get your life back (you spend a majority of time walking around the game as a corpse with reduced health)
Black: Enter a players world and help them defeat a "Red Eye" player - defeating the phantom gets you your life back
Blue: Enter a players world to help them defeat a Demon (boss man) - defeating it gets you your life back.

Don't quote me on the exact uses of red/black/blue - I'm going from memory - and I've never used them myself but it's roughly something like that.

Online mode and offline mode are not as separate as in other games. If you are connected to the PSN you will see blue ghosts of other players running through the same level you are in. You only see them for a couple of seconds and can't directly interact with them. Players can also leave messages on the floor to warn players of traps or trick them into feeling save. You will also see bloodstains on the floor. If you activate those you can see how the player to whom the blood belongs died.
With blue eye stones you can summon up to 3 other players to join you and help you out. Or you can respond to a blue eye stone and join someone else's game.
Black eye stones allow you to invade another players world and hunt him down. If you invade a game enemies won't attack you and the other player can't see you that easily. Of course other players can also invade your game at any point and engage in battle with you.
Red Eye stones are similar to black eye stones except you can choose to let a player invade your game with these.

You can find a lot more information on the excellent game wiki page (http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/) or in the DS thread in this very forum.

Do get this game. It's one of the best games in many years.

I think of the game as purely an offline single player - ignoring most of the online components.
:O You're missing out on one of the best parts of the game. Nothing more thrilling than seeing the "XXXXX invaded your game" message.

Lucky for you, there's this GIANT thread on Demon's Souls that's been going for quite a while:

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=18027-Demon-s-Souls

Basically the game exists as a massively single player online RPG. That term might be a bit confusing, so I'll elaborate. The game feels like a single player RPG in the style of Elder Scrolls. However, you are constantly connected to the online world, and that online world does influence your own single-player experience.

Demon's Souls is a fantastic, yet relentless game. You will die more than you have ever died in a game. It reminds me of the difficulty of some old school NES games, however, every death is a learning experience and it is not frustrating. If you die, it's your fault because you were careless.

There are no "modes" to the game. You are either alive, or dead. The game changes depending on this variable. If you are alive, and are killed, you become dead. You then play the game in "soul form", where your HP are halved. If you slay a Demon or assist another player in slaying a demon in their game, you are reincarnated. While in "soul form" you can invade other games to assist people, or kill them - your choice, but the colored stones are essentially a tool for deciding whether your invasion is friendly or foelike. If you are in soul form, you cannot be invaded, you can only do the invading. If you are alive, your game can randomly be invaded by other soulform players seeking to kill you, or you can ask for assistance from other dead players.

While I described the game as a single player experience, you see how you can still interact with other players online. If you play mostly in soul form and choose not to invade other games, it IS a single player game.

You can also learn from other players' experiences - you will "see" their fates through bloodstains left behind, and players can leave warning messages on the ground for other players to see...

Wow, this games sounds very unique.

The thought of a constant online game that players can invade you at any time to kill you is certainly a challenge is one i look forward to.
The scary thing for me is i'm more of a bad player at RPG's, though i like challenges, so this is gonna be one heck of a game for me XD

I saw a video on youtube showing PvP, hence why i asked for online modes, though im guessing that was two players in each other worlds fighting it off, though ill check the forums listed and thanks, ALOT!

P.S - Feel free to add me when PSN is back up and invade me in my world XD

One more thing to note... the online play is restricted to players +/- 10 levels of yours. That means at level 10, you cannot be invaded by a level 143 character who turns you to crisp with a single minor spell.

Stats are very important. You may want to do some research on your intended build before you start playing. Close quater roles (i.e. sword and shield) roles are far more difficult to master than ranged roles. If it's your first time through, you might want to consider building a mage or archer.

Might as well start with a royal if you want to have an easy time!
Melee is a lot more satisfying though. The melee combat feels a lot better than in most games. It would almost be a shame not to at least give it a try.
I found hunter to be a good starting class as it comes with a big old axe and a bow.

AHA!

Finally, got Demon Souls and as I fired up the game and did the tutorial, i couldn't help but LOL at the boss in the tutorial.. I mean, i'm dead in one hit and alive for mabie 4 seconds.. Are you serious!? I you meant to be able to kill that, lol XD

Dispite the hardness of this game, and I mean it's HARD, i'm really enjoying it. Only took me four hours to defeat the first boss, 1-1 i believe, the armoured bug thing.. Ye, didn't know he was weak to fire, so there I was hacking the thing to detah with a scimmy lol

The game is just brutal man, i mean like you die at the boss, you die.. You have to spend the time getting back there, once your dead, the entire game is 200% harder with 50% health, how does that help at all!? lol

And those god dam enemies that jump out at ya taking half ya health, now that's not friendly and it made me jump EVERY time, especially those bugs on the stairs, though really gave me a scare lol..

I thought the dragons were the boss, so i was trying to avoid getting hit by their fire and attacking them with a bow, then i realised if you cross the bridge you can continue, after getting destroyed by a big angry dragon of course Oh the feeling after i kiled the first of 20 bosses, such a relief XD

GREAT GAME, A REAL CHALLENGE! I'M DREADING THE NEXT BOSS, THE DRAGONS O.O HELP? lol
