Making a TV?
Archive: 65 posts
Wow...I just came up with that...do you guys think it's possible to make a TV? Like make a box and make a large vertical conveyor belt that has an image sequence stuck on? That would be insane! In other words...the large box (with a missing side, of course) would be stuck to the floor, inside that would be the very top of the conveyor belt, with the very first image from the image sequence stuck on. The rest of the belt would be below the ground level with the rest of the images! Then, we can make a smaller box that resembles a remote, with four basic buttons (switches) One would be to Play (turn on the belt) the next would be Pause (stop the belt) after that would be the Fast Forward (makes the belt move double speed) and the last Rewind (makes the belt move the opposite direction). Do you guys think that would work? Because I'm pretty sure everything I said is doable in LBP! =D A very quick and messy sketch of the original plan: http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh98/stix489/TV1.jpg THIS THREAD IS THE STARTING POINT OF THE TV IDEA - THE PLANS ABOVE ARE THE ORIGINAL PLANS - PLEASE DO NOT COPY WITHOUT PERMISSION AND CREDIT, THANK YOU. If you wish to submit ideas, please do so in this thread - this way, we can all share the experience! it could work if you had a simple thing like a man walking... its a good idea im ganna add everyone now actually... expect an invite | 2008-08-12 06:01:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
Wow that would be sooo amazing. The TV would be pretty hard to make but i imagine the remote would be even harder. | 2008-08-12 06:01:00 Author: Triggii Posts: 51 |
It's always possible to extract an image sequence from a video...it can be a homemade video if you want to be safe on the copyright side of things! Plus I've done simple animations before, it shouldn't be THAT hard for me! Yeah, it is going to be challenging, but I'm really going to try hard, because it's such an awesome idea! Imagine making an entire level full of different TV's with different "mini shows" on them! | 2008-08-12 06:11:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
Thats a fantastic idea...I cant wait to see what you do with it! | 2008-08-12 06:15:00 Author: Noonian Posts: 523 |
Imagine making an entire level full of different TV's with different "mini shows" on them! Haha that would be just like a movie theatre!! | 2008-08-12 06:19:00 Author: Triggii Posts: 51 |
If you pull this off, you get a cookie. A big cookie chock full of win. | 2008-08-12 06:19:00 Author: ConfusedCartman Posts: 3729 |
@Noonian: It is! Thanks for the (extremely early) support! @Triggii: Exactly! It'd be a level just to have fun and relax xD @The-reason-I'm-here (Cartman ): Haha thanks! xD Let's hope I CAN pull this off! I think I can though, we'll just have to wait and see! =D | 2008-08-12 06:24:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
CONTINUED DISCUSSION: Well a bouncing ball would be simple and quite effective for a first try! But since it's possible to make the levels really large, I could make the conveyor belt reach pretty deep down the level, which allows for more stickers, and therefore generally a longer "footage"... | 2008-08-12 07:16:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
I would make a TV with a loop film that has a waving Sackboy saying Welcome. | 2008-08-12 07:17:00 Author: Triggii Posts: 51 |
That's a great idea as well! Anyone who wants to give me "film" ideas, please do so here, so we can all get involved! This is going to be awesome! | 2008-08-12 07:24:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
Everyone that has used a ps EYE. it is very easy to make stop-motion animations useing the eye, ive done it with clay as well as other objects. all you need to do is make like 200 "frames" on a fast-moveing conveyor belt and put a picture useing psEYE on each "frame" Then add a small veiwing platform that lets you see one fram at a time. all you will be doing is makeing a stop-motion animation. ive done it on ps3 already and im sure if you can get that many frames to move fast enough it will work in LBP too... I gots it all worked out... | 2008-08-12 07:25:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
Isn't that what I said in the original post? xD See? I gots it all figured out before you! =D Let's make it official: If you wish to recreate the TV using the same idea as I am using, then at least credit me for the plan, thanks! | 2008-08-12 07:29:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
as for ideas for films... if you do what just suggested you can make a film of anything... as for ideas for movies... maybe put fake t.v. commercials on them... like "Get your littleBIGnews at Littlebigplanetcentral.com. If you took the time you could go frame-by-frame of a t.v. show... the possibilities are endless... of course untill you run out of room. | 2008-08-12 07:30:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
jeez you never said stop motion animation... way to be a jerk about it...(sniffles) lol but really it is a good idea | 2008-08-12 07:32:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
Once you make a level with a TV and you publish it and others play it, Im pretty sure atleast a few people are gonna save your creation or memorize it somehow, and then take the credit for it later. =( | 2008-08-12 07:35:00 Author: Triggii Posts: 51 |
I like the LittleBigNews @ lbpcentral.com...I'm going to edit the first post and add it as one of the ideas! =D (Credit goes to you of course) Lol sorry, didn't mean to hurt your feelings =P @Triggii: Yeah I know...that's why I'm making this thread the official starting idea for the TV...it's all going to be edited into the first post! =D | 2008-08-12 07:35:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
YESS! I got my little mustache badge! | 2008-08-12 07:39:00 Author: Triggii Posts: 51 |
it would be cool to have it in the background with a code on it... it a bunch of stickers. it would say liek buy quench and diet quench. and these shoes! then when you get to a door that needs a key to unlock you have to put the stickers that where flashing on the tv to open the door... its like in some games you have to watch a security cam to get a code needed. | 2008-08-12 07:41:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
Wow briguy, your avatar is a zombie =( | 2008-08-12 07:44:00 Author: Triggii Posts: 51 |
its nemisis from resident evil...only sack-style | 2008-08-12 07:45:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
@ Triggii: What's with the random outbursts of randomness? xD Try sticking to the TV related side of things lol! =D @ Briguy: A security camera effect would be amazing...Maybe it can show the backstory of the stage, for example it might explain why the "inhabitants" of the currents stage are all dead, or something! I'll add that to the official ideas section =D | 2008-08-12 07:48:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
Hehe, sorry. I dont think a security camera would work. It would film you and put you on the tv x.x? | 2008-08-12 07:53:00 Author: Triggii Posts: 51 |
No no...not an actual security camera! Just a security camera EFFECT...you know those horizontal lines when you're looking at footage from a security camera? Yeah something like that! A monster slowly coming closer to the TV, with the TV suddenly turning off as soon as it gets close could explain why the rest of the level is so "dead"...it would explain that the monster killed everyone! And what better way to end the stage other than letting you fight the monster as the final boss! It'll be awesome! | 2008-08-12 07:57:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
i just ment that you had to use the tv to solve puzzles... like in some other games... but since you think i had a good idea... yea i meant to say that... or maybe have a video of how to kill the boss too... a little hint twords how to beet him... it would make sense if your levels had a storyline. (im not ganna do that) most my levels are going to consist of really hard puzzles to protect my best items. i mean really really hard! back to the tv... i will have a short loop of a runthrough of the level before you play it to help you beet it... pay attention and you might just get the key to the prize-room! | 2008-08-12 08:07:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
Briguy...you're an idea generator! O_o Okay, so visual hints on how to beat the level...I like that! That would work really well! Lol well since you didn't think about it, and I did, I'm just gonna edit your name out... Only kidding, I'll leave the idea of the security camera in your name! =D We need more people giving ideas! xD | 2008-08-12 08:11:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
i have so many ideas for puzzles its insane! i also have a few minigames that are going to work no problem... | 2008-08-12 08:14:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
Haha I bet! xD Hmm...so I'm thinking of a Poker machine minigame... Three TVs - 1) Would have a picture of the original normal Sackboy. 2) Would have a picture of an altered Sackboy. 3) Would have a picture of an even more altered Sackboy (possibly with a mask on or something). Note: All TV's have all three images, the images mentioned above are already "on" the screen. There is one remote that controls all three of the conveyor belts (within the TVs). Each conveyor belt has a different speed to it, and different stop times. On each normal Sackboy Sticker (or part of the conveyor belt that the sticker is on) would be a magnetic switch...so whenever all three of the normal Sackboy stickers appear on the screen, the magnetic switches connect and the door to the next area will be unlocked! And it's all to do with luck! You have only a select number of times you can press the button before it becomes "locked" or something! | 2008-08-12 08:27:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
i kinda understand what you are saying... makes sense (off topic) I changed my sig again. wont the tv's take a lots of space to make it work? nvm i just came up with a solution. make the conveyor belt go vertical and start the level to that you are on a big block above the real ground... then have the vertical belt have 1 frame in the tv at a time. the rest of the belt is underground so it takes up very little horazontal space. thats the only way i can see 100 frames fitting in a level with takeing up a little space. | 2008-08-12 08:35:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
I know...I've already said that I'm going to make it vertical xD I actually never considered making it horizontal O_o | 2008-08-12 08:39:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
your right... "the top of the belt" sry about that... when this game is out we gotta capitalize on all this brainstorming... | 2008-08-12 08:42:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
Ha! It's alright! Yeah man, we certainly have to make something out of all this hard work! =D Anymore ideas up your sleeve? xD | 2008-08-12 08:52:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
Here's a very quick sketch of the original plan - http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh98/stix489/TV1.jpg | 2008-08-12 09:57:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
I may be missing something here, but wouldnt that make it very choppy when the conveyor belt rolls? Like just showing one image winding up to a completely different one. Its a great idea, but if you actualy want animation, put aload of thin sheets in there and stick them with each frame, then have them dissolve 1 by 1.. flaw with that idea is I dont think you could re-wind it... | 2008-08-12 10:23:00 Author: Maltay Posts: 2073 |
What exactly do you mean by "put a load of thin sheets and stick them to each frame"? And it wouldn't look choppy because the conveyor belt doesn't have to be slow to start with...I'm going to give it a pretty increased speed anyway | 2008-08-12 10:29:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |

At some point, with the conveyor belt idea, your gonna see the top half red and the bottom half blue before you see the full blue. Thats not a problem with the dissolve idea.. It's up to you though man. EDIT: Lol I spelt together wrong. | 2008-08-12 12:28:00 Author: Maltay Posts: 2073 |
Sorry I didn't bother reading all the posts so I am not sure if someone else has said this but instead of coming from below like that drawing what if you spawned in the box and the box with you inside moved to the right or left depending on the buttons you pushed and you could just lay down images or what ever side by side you also if you had like a weather channel and you could control the weater or lighting settings like rain it would be cool to be interactive. or it could go down like a elevator but the television box would stay in tack you could even break out of the box on a certain level and continue on with a theme like a black and white cowboy and indian movie or something like that | 2008-08-12 12:32:00 Author: Cartoonguy Posts: 234 |
@Maltay: Oh I see what you mean...well let's just wait till the game comes out, and we'll use a bit of trial and error, but as for now, both ideas seem logical @CartoonGuy: Can you elaborate on the first bit? Like what do you mean by "lay down images side by side you"? I don't get the weather channel bit :/ (I'm very sick lol, it's not you, it's me and my dizziness and lack of concentration) *sneezes* Maybe a simple drawing would help clear things up | 2008-08-12 12:48:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
Well i meant as to if you could have motion sensor that when it rolls over it changes the weather or a sensor for each type of weather next to a image that represents it. Like you jump in front of sunny then it get brighter or a sun just falls down from some secret container above. And then the side by side i mean horizontal instead of vertical it might be a easier task and you just jump on a button to go left or right to corespond with rew fast forward or changing channels but the tv idea is definitely awesome and hope you let me play it when done. | 2008-08-12 12:59:00 Author: Cartoonguy Posts: 234 |

Oh I see what you mean...hmm, like I said to Maltay, we'll have to wait for the game to come so we can test all these things out! But surely I can try and test yout idea! More versions of the "Stix-Vision" @vhalt: You sure can! But make sure you give me credit, also, along with the credit, you might want to include a link to this thread, that would be cool! Thanks! ^^ | 2008-08-12 13:16:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
thanks stix. of course i'll give u credit, i wouldn't steal u'r idea. also i think media molcule should take levels down that copy ideas without giving credit to whoever made it first. | 2008-08-12 14:00:00 Author: Don Vhalt Posts: 2270 |
I've thought of something similar before, perhaps to keep a story rolling. A slideshow of large pictures set so they move/switch after a period of time. I still gotta figure it out but I'm perfectly sure it's doable. Simple mechanics. | 2008-08-12 14:28:00 Author: aer0blue Posts: 1603 |
thanks stix. of course i'll give u credit, i wouldn't steal u'r idea. also i think media molcule should take levels down that copy ideas without giving credit to whoever made it first. I don't see them giving credit to Miyamoto. | 2008-08-12 14:29:00 Author: aer0blue Posts: 1603 |
:O Hey aer0blue where'd you get that avatar from? Same avatars for the win | 2008-08-12 14:57:00 Author: Unknown User |
@vhalt: No problem ^^ @aer0blue: Yeah, it's pretty much a simpler version of what I'm thinking of doing, but it would be cool to have that in game! I just came up with another idea! Is it possible at all to place the keys to other levels INSIDE a TV, instead of at the end of the level? Because, if that's possible, then we can have a TV set with fast rolling images of different levels, with a key to the level stuck on its image...So as the "footage" is rolling, Sackboy can jump into the TV and end up at a random level! That would be awesome! =D | 2008-08-13 04:21:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
that would be cool... i thnk a better way to do it (easier) is to just put a bunch of pictures on the walls with the links to other levels... (Mario-style) if thats what you meant... edit; i just saw the RANDOM part... nvm with my idea then | 2008-08-13 07:34:00 Author: 12454522412412 Posts: 779 |
I read like three times but I don't really get it. | 2008-08-13 07:45:00 Author: Unknown User |
Lol @ Brig xD A good idea nontheless! @SuperYuper: What didn't you get? The original TV idea, or this one here? | 2008-08-13 07:56:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
You could make a little PS3 and a controller, and put a screenshot of the level your playing on the TV so it looks like your playing LBP in LBP xD! | 2008-08-13 09:59:00 Author: Maltay Posts: 2073 |
I like that idea actually xD TO THE EDIT MOBILE! *spinning Sackboy logo with annoying music* | 2008-08-13 10:31:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
this can be a cool way of showing your pics for all the myspace/facebook type levels people will make that tell people about yourself | 2008-08-13 11:05:00 Author: muttjones Posts: 843 |
yea that would be awesome to show off your pics | 2008-08-13 11:07:00 Author: Thee-Flash Posts: 3154 |
Yep, I edited the first post! ^^ | 2008-08-14 08:45:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
I was thinking in order to have the maximum amount of footage, perhaps you could make the tv and platform move up the reel. Instead of the reel actually moving. Kind of like a fast elevator with a movie inside. And use the camera tool to pan in so that the player could not see the whole strip. | 2008-11-03 05:57:00 Author: tribesofwar Posts: 15 |
I may be missing something here, but wouldnt that make it very choppy when the conveyor belt rolls? Like just showing one image winding up to a completely different one. Its a great idea, but if you actualy want animation, put aload of thin sheets in there and stick them with each frame, then have them dissolve 1 by 1.. flaw with that idea is I dont think you could re-wind it... i think you're right, i think that would make a better flow, instead of rolling ones, like you describe. Rewinding could perhaps be done by pushing a button that makes all the sheets reappear | 2008-11-03 13:00:00 Author: TopAgent Posts: 16 |
Without a shutter opening and closing in time with each picture being in the centre of the film, like a cinema projector, all you would see is a strip of ascending or descending pictures sliding past the screen area. This would require some very precise timing, no? | 2008-11-03 14:33:00 Author: FlowersInHisHair Posts: 126 |
You could make a little PS3 and a controller, and put a screenshot of the level your playing on the TV so it looks like your playing LBP in LBP xD! I did that on my PS3 level lol. You have to insert the blue ray, and then jump on top of the PS3 to play LBP. | 2008-11-03 16:16:00 Author: DrunkMiffy Posts: 2758 |
Ech hem. https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=3077 I came up with the basic idea... Yours made more sense.. My idea!!!! | 2008-11-03 16:19:00 Author: TheArmedReaper Posts: 1543 |
ZOMG! I had a very similar idea. "Have" should I say, I still intend to make it. D:< The conveyer belt idea is pretty much exactly how I thought up, but instead there's a remote with "channel down" and "channel up" buttons which move the conveyer which has about 5 boxes on it. All of which are different channels and didn't things going on in each. | 2008-11-04 19:20:00 Author: UmJammerSully Posts: 1097 |
I'm sorry for the EPIC bump, but I am finally setting out to make this thing, haha! | 2009-07-03 12:11:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
You know, it'd be a lot easier to make it so the TV's characters were attached to a winch, and the winch is attached to a piston, to give the appearance of moving. Then it would be just a simple matter of tinkering to get multiple channels, and a couple of rather long TV shows. | 2009-07-03 17:02:00 Author: Sunrise_Moon Posts: 469 |
I have already started building different prototypes of the TV in my level. One of them has three identical characters connected on top of each other which is then connected to a piston. I changed the positioning of the hands on the characters, so as the piston goes up and down, it gives the effect that the character is waving. | 2009-07-04 01:04:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
It can't... be... STIX VISION?! ZOMG! :O you're making it?!?!?!?!? | 2009-07-04 01:06:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
I am indeed. | 2009-07-06 08:47:00 Author: Stix489 Posts: 2080 |
