Final Playtest

Archive: 15 posts

Hi everyone. I'm just wondering, when you finally finish that awesome level you've been working on, how many times do you play test it? I just finished my Shooter + level and I've found myself going over it like 20 times. Even though PSN is down, I usually don't have a ton of people play test, just a few 'select' friends.

So what about you guys? Not at all? A few? 100? I'm interested in the community's response!

I can't really put a number on that, but A LOT, +100.
I always try to put a certain flow in my levels and test every obstacle countless times.
Once i'm done with that i mostly test it with other players and put my controller off, you really learn a lot by looking how people play your level.

cheers,
misty

Personally I wouldn't do more than 50 times. I'd get people to test it by playing normally, then find a few people to help me try and break it. I've never finished a level to play test it, but that's how I'd go about it. I wouldn't want to spend ages doing it because I'd get bored of it and stuff. But I think if nothing was found in 50+ plays, it'd be pretty bug free and stuff.2011-04-24 16:38:00

I playtest every time I add something important, although I test it by unpausing, then rewinding. I go to play mode if everything's working right in create mode.2011-04-24 16:43:00

Once is enough for me.

Obviously I test many many times whilst making it, but I only ever usually do one final playtest.

I do all my own testing while I'm playing, so I couldn't put a number on it. I just make sure everything is working correctly before I move on to the next segment of building. Once I'm totally done, I'll just play through a couple of times. Then I have my son play it. I learn a lot more from watching him play. Then I make my final tweaks, play one more time, and publish. Just remember, you can never do too much testing. You might catch something you missed before. 2011-04-24 17:20:00

I think I've have played my level more times than the community actually has.

Okay, maybe not... I've playtested my level around maybe 100+ times. The reason? OCD. Extreme OCD.

If I create a certain portion of my level, I make sure to go ahead and play the whole thing just to make sure that while I was working on that segment, I didn't screw anything up elsewhere. If I deleted a block of dark matter that wasn't at all visible to the player, I'd still go on ahead and playtest the whole thing again. It gets worse. If I shift just one, one, little ole corner out of place on a non-reachable part of my level. It's back to play mode for me.

I guess I just have a fear that while I did all these, I might had messed something up elsewhere. Oh, and it didn't exactly help that the level I made here was pretty long too.

Wow, that sums me up perfectly, I'll add a light to the end of a level and replay the whole thing 5 times, just out of paranoia.

It's nice to know you're not alone.

I (and friends) playtest a ton after each semi obstacle.
After I'm finished the level, I'm usually sick of it, but still play through the complete thing a bunch of times.
(speed run, get all collectables, do the opposite, etc)

Anyone who tests the final online version less than once deserves to be.. er, popped.

I playtest tons...and tons. It sucked when LBP 1 showed how many times a level was played total versus a how many players played a level....mine were like 100 plus...then when they changed it it shot back down to a few plays. The issue I run into is when you play it too many times you get too good at it and you stop noticing things that may need to be fixed for new players to play it. Like the levels with the super crazy jumps with horrid camera angles that only a creator could make it through. The sad part is only have a couple friends in the city that like LBP 2 and will play test, one hardly has time to play, the other would rather play Warhawk (also great game) and plays the levels in very annoying ways like stickering levels until they overheat and such...the only plus side is he pretty much finds every possible glitch.2011-04-25 06:37:00
