How do YOU use score bubbles?

Archive: 35 posts

Simple enough question. I'm talking about using them when making standard platformer type levels here, not mini games, movies or survivals. Here's the options explained:

a) I don't use them.
There's things more important than getting a high score in my level. Bubbles wouldn't work right.

b) I don't care, I use them just because I can/should do.
Every other level uses them so I must too. I'll just put some here and there to satisfy everyone.

c) I mostly use them along the main path.
Probably to show where the player needs to go or just to make the path more interesting. High scores aren't important.

d) Mostly off the main path but not really hidden.
Perhaps in little clusters scattered everywhere. The player won't get many just running through the level, they have to come off the beaten track.

e) Hidden.
Bubbles are only rarely found in those hard to reach places.

f) The "Tower of Whoop method".
Bubbles everywhere, high potential for long score combos. High score REALLY matters.

These are just a few examples, by no means a definitive list, just a starting point to get the discussion going. I'm sure very few of us only use one of these methods, for example most levels seem to use c, d and e together. The poll is there just because polls are cool and I thought I would put one in, but I'm really curious to see how much people care about high scores and stuff. Even if you don't make levels that need score bubbles, how do you most like to see them used in levels you play??

Discuss.

I dont cair too much about score as other people. I do like the tower of whoop method. For me, it seems more fun to play. Also, if the path has a long chain of bubbles, i like to see how close i can follow it. Sometimes, it can be hard. Even if i do like that style, i dont cair for the final score. At all, actualy. Another thing is that other people that realy wants to be in the top ten, they get every point they can. It makes it imposibule to get anywhere near the top. Whats the point?2011-04-24 14:37:00

Well, with the new score giver, there are now many more options. A survival level can now award points the longer s player lives, instead of dropping random score bubbles. In my Jumper level, I award points for jumping and landing on certain platforms. I really love the scoregiver option here since putting bubbles on the platforms would not have looked right.

As for scorebubbles, they tend to be put in last and if its not a platforms level, then they are mainly put in to provide direction for a player, like I do in my story level. But I know players like them.

I will say though, prize bubbles are always off the beaten path. And only awarded to explorers.

I prefer not to use them, despite knowing that in general people prefer to have them and are more likely to return if they can achieve long multiplier chains.
If I use them it's mostly to highlight the (fastest/easiest) path and as stacks in secret areas.

Well using them along the main path, then like a couple to indicate that there is a secret area...2011-04-24 14:58:00

Im a mix between D and E.
I do like to hide them on occasion so i can see how many people explore the level. Also i find it more fun to create.

The main thing is i always keep them in groups of three pyramid style. They look better.

Now with LBP2 tools you can do a lot with them too. Spinning and emitting them (expand and shrink) it makes
the level stand out from other platformers i think.

But... A big No No and ive said this before is having score bubbles the size of a house. They look so bad.
Also stay away from bunching them up in..say a pit, were just fall into them and achieve a ridiculous score.

Happy Easter

Great topic! I actually kinda hate it when people don't use bubbles at all. It bothers me.

I love bubbles so much I have a level thats top rated pg 2 for PSP all about bubble combos!

...and a very unnoticed remake for PS3

How do I use score bubbles? Badly

I don't really care about high scores in community levels...reaching the scoreboard is often challenge enough. Good score combo placement needs to be designed into the level from the outset and I usually wait and try to add the score bubbles last. Score bubbles can look really out of sorts with my carefully constructed scenery and consume a lot of thermo...I don't lke them.

Past levels have had a lot of find the hidden point caches or used bubbles just to hilite where to go. I'm going to try to stick with score givers only in my next level.

I put a single, lonely looking score bubble in a seemingly empty space and then when it pops, the floor gives out and you fall into a burning pit of doom.
Actions have consequences...

I like to embed them into floors, especially if they're entirely embedded to the point where you can't even reach them!
Seriously now, I tend to use points in small clusters as a waypoint, saying 'go this way', or in hard to reach places to make the players feel like a boss.

I use them along the path in little chains,
I also use them in super secret areas. :3

I use score bubbles sparingly, mostly due to the fact that I don't make many platformers anymore. In the case of most of the levels I'm working on, score bubbles aren't very practical, so I don't use them. However, when I do use them, I tend to do a mix--a few on the path, a few off the beaten path, and a few as a reward for finding secrets. That way, it keeps things interesting without the scores hitting the millions.2011-04-24 20:52:00

Personally I don't really care for the Tower of Whoop method, as it gets more annoying than fun in community levels.
Each time I see it in community levels, I run into more and more design flaws (imo don't kill me) with each attempt.
I haven't played a level that was up to Tower of Whoop standard regarding score bubble flow.

I tend to place small chains (nothing above 5 or so?) along the main path, and hide empty prize bubbles for hidden areas. (as they are worth 50 points instead of 10)
Long chains aren't very fun imo. As if you miss a big one, you lose motivation to collect any more for the rest of the level.

Everyone should at least consider using them. It adds a lot of replay value to a level.

i don't use them, as my levels are concepts with very scenic places/creatures/enemies. like in my temple treasure level. its a huge unfinished Indian temple, i thought score bubbles would ruin it. but i do use score givers sometimes.2011-04-25 10:47:00

I use them in my levels along the main path, but normally I'll put them in a spot that the player won't normally go along so they need to jump up or down to get them. I never hide score bubbles (yet), just prize bubbles. I either go for the classic three bubble pyramid or hang four of them in a diamond looking shape from the ceiling or something. I'm not a fan of using the one bubble after another in a row thing much, it feels a bit lazy to me.2011-04-25 11:11:00

It really depends on the level I'm working on...
For example my two current projects while both essentially platformers have different main gameplay elements. The first has a lot of enemy vehicles to destroy offering points through score givers, the second being a more exploration geared level where bubbles are on the main path but also in secret areas.

Good thing you stopped, I heard ingestion of score bubbles can lead to Spontaneous Popping Syndrome

A mix between b and c. I put them along the main path but I usually forget, but then remember when I find it feels a bit plain. Then put them in to make it a bit more interesting for the 3 people who decide to play.2011-04-25 14:54:00

Score bubbles are a great way to show the player which way to go, in addition to things like signs or camera shots. However, I also like to reward players for exploring other areas of the level, so I tend to hide some clusters for those that really want that high score.2011-04-25 18:53:00

If that was aimed at me, I don't have to publish a level to make one or use score bubbles.

I use them to show the player where to go, usually they are in a line for 2x/3x combos or sometimes they are in groups. (like most people the pyramid of 3 stacked on each other, I find that looks good too) I will hide them sometimes, normally accompanying a prize bubble as well. (not an empty one though) I think about the high score of a level as well, but not as much as something like Tower of Whoop though.

I chose c, e, and f.

F, not so much though.

Now that We have LBP2, I no longer use them whatsoever.
I Prefer other means to give the player points now.

I have to admit that I usually use them because I think I should (maybe that's why all of my old levels suck). Anyway reading this thread has given me another brilliant level idea, perhaps I should get around to publish something new.2011-04-25 21:40:00

Good topic! I used score bubbles in a diversed way. I mostly use them in small clusters hidden a little off the main path and also use them to highlight combos in a mild to hard platforming area. Recently I used them as decorations and also as a way to set up your own point combos by grabbing them with the grapple hook. I also use them to lure players away from secret areas since most will follow the bubble path. So I guess I use them to reward the players who explore and have quick fingers 2011-04-25 23:00:00

Mostly C, although sometimes E. I Like scattering a few bubbles in chains across my levels if I think it is a bit dull in that area, and sometimes I put a group of five in hard-to-reach/unexpected areas (you can trigger bubbles to be collected you know, like you do with the lazer camel ). I also sometimes add race gates activated by sticker sensors so players can get a lot more points when they play twice. (Race gate starts and finished can be triggered also... and closed-level gates. 2011-04-25 23:43:00

Cool, I heard you can change muesli with bubbles into the yogurt and it's awesome.
But I was told that if you mix them with ketch-up they can become poisonous.

My main use of score bubbles is just to guide the player and keep them entertained by the simpler parts of the level, when there are necessary breaks in the level to make room for more complex elements, I usually place some sort of score chain to encourage players to keep moving and find more of the level, but mostly just to show people where to go to be honest.2011-05-01 03:28:00
