any fans here? Love Deadmau5 really trying to go to a concert of his soon. If you don't know Deadmau5 is a techno-(dub-stepish) artist that wears a big "mask" like this: http://www.clashmusic.com/files/imagecache/big_node_view/files/images/deadmau5.jpg

Not at all like dubstep. Deadmau5 is electro/house.

That "moar ghost n stuff track" sounds a lot like daft punk in their early years.2011-04-23 16:05:00

I don't insanely love his music, but I do occasionally listen to it.

I still love an old/classic one better, though. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L93-7vRfxNs)

I read an article/interview with DeadMau5 in Rolling Stone some months ago, I can?t remember it verbatim or anything but, he said something like the first electro/house or whatever genre you prefer to categorize him under-type song he recorded was done as a joke, he was more a fan of industrial music like Nine Inch Nails and for a laugh made a stereotypical ?dance? song, he posted it up on some website and was surprised to see how popular it became.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbCLNc_1dXo

After that he just went along for the ride making tons of money but hating what he was doing, now that he can afford to do what he wants he says he?s recording an album more in line with the sort of music that he actually enjoys. I've been trying to find that Rolling Stone article on line but the best I could find was a site which summarizes/quotes sections of it:

Some of his music is good, but the majority of his stuff sounds like rip-offs of other peoples work to me. Plus, I hear personality wise he's a giant ****.

Makes some decent tunes though.

I have a mixed opinion of him. Almost in a jealous like way.
In my opinion, I think he's one of the best at what he does production-wise. As in perfecting the synths and making the beats beat hard and crisp and whatnot. Compare his tracks to others in his area of music and he clearly ahead of the league.
Yet at the same time, I find most of his tracks godawful. I can hardly stand them, and the melodies or 'breaks' that appear mid-song. I find them boring, tedious, aimless, etc. and I feel he can do so much more with it. He has the skill, the fame, the funds, but maybe not the talent or 'magic' like other producers had before hand, if you knawmsayin.
But the reason I still don't delete his stuff from my itunes is because I occasionally need my fix of perfect production and catchy beats, though I may only listen to a minute or two of each track and not the 3 minute build up and ending. Way to repetitive for me to enjoy listening to.
Same goes to Skrillex and Excision. But that's a different story.

tl;dr: He may have his flaws, but he's pretty good.

You nailed it down to a T Mr Voodeedoo.

Skrillex is certainly a hard one to put my finger on. I like his beats, and his music is just fine..I just can't shake the feeling that this is the beginning of the end for electro house/dubstep. (well before it's commercial anyway) /hipster*

It's such a distorted, spliced version as to what those genres started off as. Don't get me wrong, i'm all for pioneering new music, I just can't shake the feeling that it will cause a divide within the electronic music scene.

Plus, he looks like an absolute tool, but that's just me being shallow and judgemental.

Morton's post.

I see what you mean. I think they're geniuses in some areas of music and complete amateurs in others. I feel that both of their synthesizers and bass techniques are spot on and way ahead of the game [as no one has really come close to making their sort of mean, scary growly synths], which is probably why there are so many tutorials and requests on how to get "dat dirty exsision basses!!1". To me, they really have the know how of being able to play 10 seconds of their music and send all surrounding hipsters running to the nearest midi keyboard to begin trying to 'out-bad' them.

Despite that, I think Skrillex's songs are cheesy [not all, but the new stuff seems like it came out the *** of the old stuff]. I feel that if someone else had the capabilities to do his sort of synthesis they could put it to use in a more interesting, creative way. Same for excision, but I feel his tracks are just boring loops. Almost the same sort of synth is used in every track, and it's the same old 'kick.... snare...... kicksnare..... kick...' and it never really changes. I keep both Skrillex and Excision on my iPod just because I can use my fix of that modern day 'intensely-catchy' Canadian electronic music. I never really listen to a song for more than a minute, I get the point by then.

Ah-ha, this brings me onto another thing i'm a little worried about. I tend to be seeing a lot more producers and a lot less musicians...well here in internet-land anyways. You can make the most 'bangin' tune ever, but still have your only performance talent as being pressing 'play.' I understand the difference between a rock band and a DJ set, I just feel like we're getting to the point where programmers are making music rather than musicians.

If the songs sound good though, theres no real issue, I just feel sorry for the MIDI king who goes up on stage only to stand there, awkwardly whilst his dirtiest drop makes the cool kids jump. Where's the soul in that?!

I heard Rusko was planning on doing a live dubstep set with actual instruments, which would be awesome to see! I just hope there's more of that and less of what I predict. I dunno, maybe i'm wrong, I hope i'm wrong, I just can't help feel annoyance towards the guy headlining a set who hasn't so much as twanged an E minor.

Lol, are we going a little off topic? XD

Not anymore!

Okay, back on topic. I see what you mean how there is less performance art sprouting out nowadays. I don't see much of a problem with that but it's kind of silly that a dj set is comparable to a performance. The gap separating the two is getting wider I notice though. As AFX said, he often says he does dj sets and not performances because with performance everyone would just be staring at him, and at a set everyone would just dance.

I never really enjoyed Rusko but I hear he's big shot. It'd be interesting to see how he implements dubstep into a performance art. I'm still struggling with that sort of thing too, I want to perform but can't find any other inexpensive way other than my turntables :/ Deadmau5 said djs that play 2 songs at the same speed bore him, but to me, deadmau5 playing 1 song at a certain speed bored me even more.

Some can really pull off a great performance though. Have you seen DJ Shadow or Daedelus live? They tear the place up!

Oh, hell yeah man. I mean, not in person, but i've seen videos and stuff. A friend of mine saw Daedelus live and kinda turned me onto him. He plays around with that Monome thing..i'm still not sure exactly how it works, (triggers loops? I unno) but it looks like a step in the right direction as to what I was talking about. (Performers/DJ's)

They're kinda dinosaurs of the DJ world now though and, sadly, vinyl's kind of a dying art. It seems to be all about these CDJ's now. I've had a go on some, and they're strange. Clever, but strange, like a nerd who knows Stairway To Heaven backwards. You know it's awesome and technical, but it's not cool.

Well, anyway, heres someone I think is pretty cool, doing something with something pretty cool, cool? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6tLRCDqJ2c

.....oh, crap, Deadmau5..uhhh..wait, i've got it! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX1pWJMVlE4)

The monome just plays samples I believe. That video you showed me reminded me of when I used to look at all those crazy new gadgets for performance, I never felt I could really go deep with those though XD Too scary!
But I agree regarding the vinyls being a dying art, personally I'll always show my support but I never really see dj's use them, instead they use cdjs or those new-and-hip spacebars that hook up directly to your Ableton Live, as well as that one knob that makes it sound flangy and cool. Skrillex has to be the ultimate example of someone who doesn't perform or dj live, but sort of goes through pandora and checks the meters and volumes and whatnot many times throughout each track. At least, from what I've seen.
An example of how much the Shadow is serious for performance arts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=je1QjRbDu1E

Oh yeah, this post needs more mau5... here, I think his arm or something taps the spacebar or something.

Got that impression too, i find it hard to listen to a deadmau5 tune and not think of artist X within 10 seconds
The standard synth sounds, the boring breaks people have been doing since the 90's, the very predictable song structures... is all has been done to death. Maybe i haven't heard enough deadmau5 stuff, but what i've heard really let me down

cheers,

I haven't seen that video for ages! A friend showed it to me yonks ago and i'd almost forgotten who it was!

When was that video of Deadmau5 taken? He looks quite a lot different to how he does now. I saw him in the most recent 'Epic Meal Time' looking like a junkie.
