3D Camera View Maze. 360? Full Rotation Tech Demo

Archive: 8 posts

Here's a technical demonstration showing that it is possible to get full (smooth) rotation using the 3D camera view glitch in Little Big Planet 2.

I'd seen the 3D camera glitch and thought it was a cool effect, but quickly noticed that you couldn't rotate it. I saw it as a technical challenge to create full smooth rotation which would allow this glitch to be more useful.

Here's a video showing it working....

http://youtu.be/De_esYUKmzw

The level has two playing spaces. The one in the video is just an open space allowing the player to freely roam. There's also a maze where you have to find the centre to collect the score bubbles.

It's still quite limited in what you can do with it as the rotation is just an illusion. The player doesn't rotate - the playing space rotates around the player.

I have added a prototype of the system as a prize to show more clearly how this effect was achieved and hopefully encourage other creators to develop this idea further. The prototype was only produced to test the concept. Since the video was uploaded to YouTube I have improved the system further. The version in the video will only let you move in 8 directions (left, right, forwards, backwards, and diagonally), I have created a version that allows you to move in all directions by using variable speed pistons.

I welcome any questions from creators developing this idea, I'll do my best to answer them.

Place a rotator on the map. This has been done before.2011-04-23 19:29:00

@sackruler: The rotater has been done befor, and there is alot more to it then that. For it to work right, The pivot point needs to change, witch the rotater cant do.
It seems like fluxlasers did a good job with that challange, i have tryed to do it and it is not easy. The only thing is that when its going straght, the sackboy is leaning slightly to the left. I will play it, but like all of you know, the PSN is down.

You're exactly right. As soon as you start experimenting with rotating the playing space you quickly realise that it cannot be done with a rotator and that you need to create a system for moving the pivot point of the playing space. It isn't possible to change the pivot point of an object, so I created a system that moves the whole playing space. The pivot point remains constant along with the player's position and the playing space moves around them.

The issue of the sackboy leaning, or moving straight at an angle, is due to the fact that the playing space can rotate to any angle, but it can only move in 8 directions, so the sackboy will only appear to travel straight if the playing space is aligned with the 8 directions of movement.

This has been resolved with the latest developments to the system. With this earlier version the pistons that move the playing space extend or retract at a constant speed which can only give 8 directions of movement. The latest version uses variable speed pistons controlled by a group of tag sensors and direction combiners that return approximate analogue values equal to the sine or cosine of the angle that you want to travel. This allows the playing space to move in any direction.

It looks really great. Ill be sure to check it out when psn is back up.

Ive been creating a 3d fps trailer using a fully rotating level to show what I would do with a fully functional 3d cam. You may find it interesting if I ever get around to finishing it lol.
