I can't find an elevator tutorial.

I'm probably overlooking it.

I want to make an elevator that goes either up or down, but I do not know how.
I am sorry if this is in the game. I couldn't find it.

Pistons and winches are most commonly used for elevators to make them actually move.

Winches are more if you want it to wobble about, while pistons are more straight up and down. To make a clean, clinical elevator, try using a piston set to stiff. Check out the tutorials for those two parts for more details.

And if you want a quick suggestion for how to make an elevator that starts low, goes up when the player is in it, and goes down if they are not (in case they jump or fall off) then...

Set up a piston, set it to stiff, attach a sensor to the bottom of the elevator, on the platform the player stands on, with a radius of the size of the elevator itself or slightly smaller. Attach the sensor to the piston, set the sensor to directional, and have it inverted if it's in the wrong spot at the time you start it.

Hope it helps!

It does. Thank you.

Would it work with a three-way switch? I.E. You pull left to go up and right to go down.

Yes, it would. You can invert the switch directions as well if it makes more sense in context. For a 3 way switch, on/off would be better than directional as it gives more control of where the player moves the elevator to.

It all depends on the place the elevator is in, I would say. If it's a narrow tunnel they can't bypass going down, but may want to go back up, then a 3 way would work well. Just be aware that people might set the elevator in a position they can sneak underneath it to try and cheat, and plan accordingly.

Also, don't create a situation where players move an elevator, die, and come back in a place where they can't get back into the elevator (because it's too high or something).

The way Mm usually handled this is to create a one-way section just before their elevators so that players cannot go backwards, and placed a new checkpoint on the elevator such that players MUST activate it before the elevator moves.

I make elevators using six wheels with a front piece bolted on. The wheels push against two pillars creating movement up and down.2008-12-03 19:36:00

That is much more taxing on the thermometer compared to a piston.

Whatever floats your boat

That's exactly why I love LBP sooooooooo much. Everyone has a different take on every situation, which will always keep this game fresh

I couldn't help but laugh at the sheer amount of awesomeness. Heavy on the thermometer as Linque said, but still sounds very original.

Also
When creating a elevator (it's called a lift where I come from, but anyway)
It's a good idea to go into grid mode when placing the pistons, as to get them straight and working their best

One more thing that hasn't been mentioned here: if you want a winch to move the elevator/lift in a straight line, just attach a strength 0 stiff spring in addition to the winch.2008-12-03 21:33:00

Never thought of that. To tell you the truth, I've never even used a spring lol:o

I just encountered one that was like this in a museum level (hard as **** musem level, as I haven't finished playing it yet [and my rusty German couldn't make out the speech bubbles)), but I have to admit, it was actually pretty frickin' impressive to use just the wheels and not the pulleys/pistons to do it.

Well, that is how real world elevators work. You can't create a piston without any power system behind them.
