Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Be Aware!

Archive: 10 posts

I just wanted to make everyone on this forum aware of something which has greatly affected me in the past few days, and warn you of the possible consequences.

I have been diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in my right hand, and the doctor thinks it has been more than partly affected by my use of the PS3, specificially repetitive stress brought on by extended use of the controller.

Symptoms include numbness and tingling in the hand and fingers, and acute pain when I try to grip anything, even a pen.

It's a little better today with anti-inflammotory tablets but I really want to make everyone aware of this risk, and advise you to PAY ATTENTION to the advise in-game which tells you to take frequent breaks. (Unfortunately something which I have never paid much attention to)

I want to clarify that this isn't a cry out for sympathy, just intended as a little awareness for you all

I'm sorry to hear about your sickness, though I want to warn you to listen to more than one medic, because sometimes they're wrong, as I learnt at my expenses.
I've known lots of people affected by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and I know it's painful and annoying, but what I'm almost certain of, it's than it can't be related to holding a joypad.
It's related to how and how strong you grab things, the stress that you put on your hand.
What I suggest is to hold the joypad with relax or try to use wristbands everytime you know you have to put stress on your hands and wrists for a long time.
If the muscle is warm is surely more relaxed and less subjected to being injured or inflammated.
They don't cost lots and they do miracles.

I usually buy the long ones, but they're harder to find, so sometimes I just use 2 pairs of them at the same time.

Many thanks Omega, I'll look into that!

I definately agree to look for other opinions, and I'm currently waiting for an appointment with another physician to see if they have anything else to say. I'll check out those wristbands for sure

Despite what your doctor says, there is no proven causal link between repetative tasks and carpal tunnel syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpal_tunnel_syndrome#Causes).
Your doctor is saying that because it 'sounds' like a plausible explination... but that doesn't automatically make it true.

"the weight of evidence suggests that this is an inherent, genetic, slowly, but inevitably progressive idiopathic peripheral mononeuropathy".

It means that you personally should avoid prolonged use of something like a PS3 controller because of your condition... but it doesn't make the PS3 controller responsible for your condition.

But I empathise with you... tough break.

Oh my - that really is interesting. At first I thought it might just be an off opinion from the doc, but thanks for sharing that link with me macnme - look like I should have read through it more thoroughly I'll be sure to take that along to my next appointment!!2011-04-21 12:06:00

Yeah, don't always trust docs...sad but true, but you learn it at your expenses when someone can read x-rays and not ecographies and viceversa.
I put a lot of stress on hands and wrists, since I raise heavy weights at work and plays guitar obsessively at home.
I didn't read the article Mac posted, but yeah, as I know, people may have or not a certain predisposition to be affected by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

could be misdiagnosed as tendonosis and if you hold your controller lightly and in your upper hand as well as stretches every now and then this should not be a problem.

sources, my doc lol

Carpal Tunnel unfortunately can lead to a small operation on your arm, if you want to get rid of it. My ma had it in both arms, and has gotten rid of it in the worse one by operation.2011-04-22 13:57:00

Oh my. I met a woman today who'd had the surgery, and she said it worked wonderfully, but I'm definately going to this second appointment to get a second opinion. Thanks distinct and kquinn 2011-04-22 14:18:00
