How to Write a HELPFUL Review

Archive: 12 posts

I've been readin reviews for levels lately, and quite frankly, some are terrible, and mean.

Do's

If you liked a level, don't say "Ths was teh bst Lvl Eva!!!!!!!!!!!!. Do you know how noobish that makes you sound? When writing a review, be helpful. It goes a long way, and people might think "Hey, this guy left a good review... I think I might try his level".

Don't's

Don't advertise levels in reviews.

You pretty much just said "Write a helpful review, don't advertise and don't say "Level pwned, awesome" instead". Some examples of a helpful review would be much more efficient. Look around lbp.me and take some examples of highly helpful reviews and compare them to the reviews not so helpful. Make points about what you could mention in a review, such as commenting on how the visuals were done, how the gameplay was, how original or innovative something in the level was, if the layout of the area to play in was done well, if anything wasn't clear or hard to accomplish, etc.

Also, stating to use comments to advertise levels isn't what comments are for. They're to comment on the level you played when a review doesn't cut it. Not an advertising space to cash in on somebody else's success.

Ok, here goes nothing. This is a great review.

The level [*insert level name*] was a great [*insert genre*]. The visuals were astonishing, and I could tell you spent hours with the cutscenes. I think the [*insert specific part that could be improved*] part was ok, but itcould be improved by [*insert suggestion here*]. I hope to see a sequel, and here's an idea: [*insert idea for sequel here*].

Obviously, that review might not work for everyone, but for most levels it could.

When I review somebodies level, I typically have a pad and pencil in my lap so I can jot down tiny notes as I progress..."Liked this...this frustrated me...this checkpoint should be moved to the blah blah blah...the bubbles in *this* room weren't glued together...." etc...either that, or write the review as I'm playing, stopping to write each time I feel I've completed a "section". While this doesn't apply to all level formats, it tends to work fairly well.2011-04-17 19:09:00

I dont follow a specific rule when i review stages, i just tell them what i thought was good or bad, give some suggestions if needed. No one booed any of my feedback so far...

I disagree with advertising in reviews for a certain extent. If you do that, you should first give some sort of feedback, then i dont see nothing wrong with trying to get people to try out your level, as long as it doesn't take up the vast majority of the review.

Theres no specific guidlines in reviewing, I say simply say

" Give constructive feedback or none at all. "

Bashing doesn't help the creator improve upon themselves.
You could also go as far as saying in certain situations, it could possibly turn them into grievers, H4H'ers, or spammers.
because it could affect them to the extent that "If I can't get good rating why should I try anymore?"
But thats alot of IF.
Constructive criticism helps, grieving does nothing.

On an extra note:
Is it just me or has the been a large flux of these type of threads recently?

There isn't one specific way to write a helpful review, that was an EXAMPLE. and, if you give feedback, I guess it'd be ok to advertise a level if you wan feedback. Don't say "Plz ply meh Lvl."2011-04-17 23:37:00

I do believe the constant "plz ply meh lvl" and general requests for feedback were the original motivation for the Feedback 4 Feedback section.

Much better advice. As you said it won't work for everyone and everything, but it's a decent starting point for those who are new to reviewing or not very good at it.

Haha, the first thing you have in the "Do's" section is a don't.

When I write a review, I try to give the creator a little morale boost by telling them what I thought was awesome, crazy original, or otherwise interesting, then I point out any glitches that I encountered, areas that I thought were uninteresting, unoriginal, or could be improved some other way.
