Corrupted Profile! I lost heaps of work!!

Archive: 15 posts

Hi there LBPC peeps,

I've been playing LBP2 since release and have alot of work saved including pictures, pod decorations, costumes and objects incuding many levels on my moon. Yesterday after playing with friends for a while, I went back to try to create and I opened my objects section and tried to pick something to use. It loaded for a second the dissapeared and turned into a red star shaped symbol with a white exclamation mark inside it. It wouldn't load. I tried to load another object... same thing. Then it just spread. Nothing was usable it all just dissapeared along with my pictures, objects pod decorations. I was panicking because I had not saved my profile for a while. I resetted it and tried again and again in many different ways such as modem off and so on to no avail. My profile was unfortunately corrupted/wrecked/destroyed for no apparent reason.

I had to resort to importing a 2 week old profile. Its all I had... Atleast this way I wont lose as much as was lost in its current state... Or so you'd think. Guess what? The old profile came with all the symtoms of my currently corrupted profile. Everything that was wrecked was also wrecked in the old profile I imported. As you could imagine, I felt like an normal persons would in that state; I felt like head butting my PS3 along with LBP2 out of the window!

I am very upset about this and would like to know has this every occured to any of you and do any of you know what could have caused this? Among my friends list, this has apparently happened to around 7 people within 2 weeks! Thats just isn't acceptable. Why have a profile back up system when it doesnt even work? This is very discouraging to any serious creator such as my self and am very upset by this. Any information or stories of anything similar that you'd like to share, I'd much appreciate it.

Thank you. LFiers.

Note: I have recently also been getting sign in errors for like a week when trying to sign in to PSN. I also get an error code sometimes like "An error has occured when trying to sign in to PSN" which I hear has been happening to many people. Not sure if this could be a contributing factor or not but if this also keeps happening, I will also post a thread about that.

Where was the old profile backup stored? On a USB, or on the PS3?2011-04-17 14:58:00

With the PSN sign in issue, I've had that when signing in automatically to PSN. Doing it manually does the trick though. I just figured it was PSN playing up. It seems odd your old save had the same problem though, since once it's been backed up it isn't touched for anything from how I see it. By some evil stroke of luck perhaps the problem was around on your profile all the way back then (I doubt it though). The latest patch comes to mind as something I'm wondering could be part of it, since both profiles seemingly have this issue now after the recent patch LBP2 had, but I'm only pondering on it, I'd have no clue if that could do anything. Just seems the only thing I could think of though for both profiles going kabloom yet being a considerable time apart from each other.2011-04-17 15:09:00

This is kinda odd.

It's possible that importing an old profile doesn't fully reset whatever the condition is that is causing the problem. Try deleting the active profile from the Game Data area before importing the backup.

If that doesn't solve the problem, it's possible the profile was always corrupted, but the symptoms didn't manifest until installing patch 1.03 - you could confirm this by downgrading to 1.02, but even if that does solve the problem, you won't be able to play online.

Thanks for the quick response. I thought the same at first but heres the thing about that theory though; I backed up my newer profile (the one the corrupted) right before I imported the old one and it was exactly 2905KB all up! Thats awefully small... Yet my older 2 week old profile which has much less work saved in it was 18MB! Thats a massive difference. It seems as if the data in my current corrupted profile just became a hollow of its self... a ghost if you will. But the thing is is the older one is 18MB as it should be and always was, then it should be as it was when I backed it up right? Very strange indeed. Mkes no sense.

Where was the old profile backup stored? On a USB, or on the PS3?

It was on both an external HDD and the PS3. Both backed up on the same date and both 18MB. Why do you ask? Thanks.

Okay, this is just a guess, but if you have your profile backed up on an external drive, maybe clearing ALL your LBP data off the ps3 would make a difference.
What an awful thing! I hope you get this resolved.

No I didn't turn it off while loading/saving. Everything was fine as I was playing with friends in create mode. But after I left I went back to my moon in 1 player & this is when I realised things had gone wrong.

I think the PSN has been attacked by hackers, Anonymous; http://www.complex.com/tech/2011/04/hack-group-anonymous-shuts-down-playstation-website-network

I was playing online and downloaded the LBP2 update 1.03, when I was forced to sign out and recieved the 80710092 error for the last 2 days. Whats odd is that I put another game in and recieved a 1.03 update for that as well even though it wasn't plugged into the internet and all the updates were already installed. I looked at some of my friends profiles on LBP.Me who I know are in the US and they haven't been online either.

Could a virus been sent to all systems over the PSN? has anyone one else seen a game update 1.03 for games other than LBP2 over the last 2 days?

Yeah I know about that I read about it. Crazy stuff. I have also been getting those same errors on and off lately. I know that its apparently them that are causing the sign in errors but do you think they could have contributed to the loss of my profile somehow?

Data corruption can be caused by anything; game glitches, updates, system processing overheating. I lost lots of my data because the graphics card overheated several months before I got the YLOD and had to buy a new system. I read that companies make their systems with poor quality components to drive down the cost and shorten the lifespan of the system to maximize profits.

I escalated the issue with Sony and Media Molecule to put in a manual profile back-up utility because I kept loosing my profile data, they gave me a free joystick, a game and a manual profile back-up utility for LBP. I now use it every 20 min and save the data onto a USB drive each night.

I got the same problem and fixed it by deleting the game data and reload it, then install the 1.03 update. Then use the backup utility again...

Thanks for the info. What exactly is a manual backup utility and how did you manage to score a free game and joystick from Sony? Should I ring Sony and tell them what happened?

Thing is, if the recent update could do this, surely at least ONE other person on a site this size would have brought it up by now that their profile was corrupted. You being the only one after the recent update makes me think it's unlikely the update itself is corrupting anything. Unless it's a mega rare case or something.2011-04-18 12:44:00

The manual backup utility is what we have now, before in LBP 1 the game would automatically save on its own and left the creator helpless in saving their profiles. When you were in create mode you would save the level but it didn't save the profile. Most of the profile loss was because the data wasn't being saved properly. I escalated the issue with Media Molecule and Playstation Network Management and explained the solution would be for a manual backup utility of the profile data, and for the profile to be saved when saving in a level.

I got a game and a joystick for the profile loss, the update and also the re-release of preorder exclusive God of War Costumes which probably lead to other preorder re-release of costumes...Kicking up a fuss is something you could do and seems to be the only way to make things happen...but it may burn future bridges with Sony and Mm.

Same thing with sending ideas to Mm, they will use them without even a thank you...the only satisfaction you get is the knowledge you helped to make the improvements.
