A simplified Music Sequencer.
Archive: 17 posts
Hi forum i think what everyone wants is a simplified music sequencer, so that if we wrote down sheet music and want to play it in lbp it'd be easy. The new sequencer whould pop up and you'd select, say, a piano and put it on the circuitboard. The piano icon then pops up to be the same as sheet music, so you can place notes here and there and it would play through them. It would be easier so the average idiot (like me) could make my own tunes. | 2011-04-17 09:59:00 Author: BeaversLikeWood Posts: 119 |
Yeah that would be good! | 2011-04-17 22:14:00 Author: Squidge99 Posts: 203 |
I'm confuzed? Are you saying you want to be able to import sheet music? It seems to me that you can already do what you're talkiing about above. | 2011-04-17 22:55:00 Author: Rustbukkit Posts: 1737 |

The sequencer currently allows someone with no musical ability to make music. Reading musical notation requires training and skill. Placing pegs on a sequencer board doesn't. What you're describing is more complex, not simple. | 2011-04-17 23:31:00 Author: schm0 Posts: 1239 |
I personally don't like this idea, because it takes LBPness out of music sequencing and that's kinda what made music sequencing fun | 2011-04-18 01:14:00 Author: Clivefan11 Posts: 106 |
Okay, so my idea isn't that great. Anyway What everyone wants to do is IMPORT music. | 2011-04-18 07:30:00 Author: BeaversLikeWood Posts: 119 |
Nah, that's illegal. | 2011-04-20 01:41:00 Author: GameRoom Posts: 200 |
Personally, I don't think I'd want that. Call me crazy, but I LOVE experimenting with music and making it myself. It makes music sequencing very achieving and something you can be proud of. Plus, you can edit and remix it. If you could import ANY music in original form, likely you wouldn't be able to do that. And again, music sequencing as it is now = rewarding. Now all we need is more instruments... | 2011-04-20 01:50:00 Author: Fang Posts: 578 |
It's not hard to put sheet music on the sequencer if you know where the keys on a piano are. | 2011-04-20 02:12:00 Author: Arkei Posts: 1432 |
Just have an option. I know sheet music so, for someone like me, who plays an instrument and thus KNOWS how to read sheet music, can do it a lot easier. | 2011-04-20 02:46:00 Author: jalr2d2 Posts: 256 |
It's really not that hard to transcribe sheet music onto the sequencer, at least if you know where your basic notes are. If you know how to read sheet music, it should be a snap, specially with the music sequencer pointing out the C note out to you. | 2011-04-20 03:17:00 Author: Astrosimi Posts: 2046 |
Nah, that's illegal. I see that now. | 2011-04-20 09:36:00 Author: BeaversLikeWood Posts: 119 |
It isn't that hard to transcribe, but I'd love an option in the Music Sequencer's settings that you could switch between Piano Roll and Sheet Music. Another good option IMO would be the ability to turn Tablature on or off in the sequencer's settings. | 2011-04-20 13:42:00 Author: Green-Tomato Posts: 140 |

Another good option IMO would be the ability to turn Tablature on or off in the sequencer's settings. ... except tablature applies to only a handful of instruments? | 2011-04-20 14:31:00 Author: schm0 Posts: 1239 |
I actually wish the sequencer had more features like note panning, EQ, higher quality samples, more instruments, etc. The sheet music idea would be nice, but i think only if you could print it out. If not then the way it is now is fine with me. | 2011-04-20 14:38:00 Author: comishguy67 Posts: 849 |

If not then the way it is now is fine with me. You can currently emulate note panning with multiple instruments/channels... if you're referring to panning during the sustaining of a note, that would be a nice feature (but see my comments below regarding processing power/memory). I really think that EQ would take up too much processing power to play live. It might work if it were pre-processed into the instrument, however. But then you'd have potentially dozens of the same instrument, thus running into memory problems rather quickly in your sequencer. Truly HQ samples aren't going to arrive any time soon, as they'd simply take up too much memory (the PS3 has this in limited amounts already). More instruments are on their way, to be certain... but I'd balk at any of the other recommendations making it in, unfortunately. I've already ran into limitations on the amount of channels you can play at a given point in time, and I'm sure the live processing of the music sequencer has been carefully tailored to run in coordination with an already complex and dynamic game engine. There are things that can be implemented quite easily, but the physical hardware of the PS3 and the LBP2 engine itself is what is going to limit the features in the music sequencer going forward. While they certainly would be handy, I'm just not sure they're practical in light of implementation. As for the OT, I just couldn't imagine a more simple sequencer that is accompanied by so many features. I think MM got it right when designing this tool, and I applaud them for opening up the floodgates for potential musical creators (aka myself) that would never have tried implementing music using the overly complex and clunky LBP1 methodology. | 2011-04-20 16:17:00 Author: schm0 Posts: 1239 |
Yeah, so...the dude above me? What he said. Seriously, though, I love the music sequencer. I've been so busy making my own tunes and transcribing classical/Chrono Trigger music I haven't gotten enough level building done ;p....I only have two complaints: Not enough instruments (obvious) and inability to change time signature...where's 3/4? I know you can still do it (I've got Romance Anonimo finished) but I like the visual reference as well, with the bars split into thirds instead of fourths...just me though... | 2011-04-20 20:46:00 Author: EvilWuun Posts: 152 |
