Hello, could anyone give me a breif explanation on how to make your own lettering. I've seen this done in other levels but I don't have a clue on where to start. Do you have to start off with a block and use the corner editing tool to create them yourselves, or is there any easier way for this?

Also the same goes for custom shapes, say if I wanted to make a shape that looks like a specific car how could this be done?

I seen some the videos they're really well made.

I have just one thing to ask for I would like you (if able) to make a video on demonstrating how to make a multiplayer deathless tele-porter that goes from say point 1 to point 2 then back to point 1.

I know there are threads on this but a video aid would be more of a help compared to just words and basically no pictures to boot

If you do the video thank you in advance

Hey.

After watching your Grid movement/rotation tutorials, I have a query. What if the objects are solid and not holgrams? Obviously, this means they are effected by gravity, and adding an anti grav icon effects the speed of the movers. Have you worked out a way to get perfect grid movement with solid items?

You just have to set the options of the Mover to 100% Acceleration and 100% Deceleration. Then there is no problem.

I'm not sure, but making the material non-stick might benefit in case you are working with sticky or high friction material, when passing by other objects. (not sure, but it couldn't hurt)

When working with "physical" material, it is easy to have non-working grids when an element is slightly of grid, and the object is exactly 1 square big, so that's something you need to be wary of, esp. if there are multiple elements moving around. Otherwise, you can have static objects 1 square deep, and make your moving object a thin layer, which would eliminate collisions.

I've used advanced movers on solid materials before. With the effects of the anti grav, the movements tend to be slower. Can you tell me what settings I should have my anti grav on?

You don't need an Anti-Gravity Tweaker.

Won't they just fall to the floor? I'm pretty sure I've tried it before with solid objects (I'm talking about metal, wood, stone etc).

*Runs to ps3, puts in LBP2 disk, enters create mode, applies advanced mover, set deceleration to 100%, shakes fist..... **** you ScorpSkull! Hangs head in shame.... who am I to question ScorpSkulls create skills?*

Silly me

Thanks.

EDIT: You have to put an anti grav sensor on them, set to 100-0-0, or else the vertical movement isn't quite right, it offsets itself a little bit.

sorry but i totally disagree with that. bad grammar is no indication of how good a level is and neither is a generic sticker or level name. these may be ways of guaranteeing more hits for your own levels but they are not ways of discerning the quality of the content. illiterate people are creative too you know2011-08-19 14:29:00

not to mention that not all creators speak English or at least not fluently. I agree, bad grammar does not necessarily equate to a bad level

If you use bad grammar or spelling errors (I?m talking about really bad spelling errors and grammar) or if a creators uses no creative level icon then it just shows that the creator puts no effort in the level. This method is based on my experience. Also don't forget the uploaded photos or the reviews. You can?t just say: no good level icon or grammar = bad level.

sorry but i just don't see it as a good rule of thumb. i'm not saying it lacks some credibility, but not enough to warrant following to the letter.

Well, like I said this method is based on my experience. It works for me so I thought other could use this too to find better levels.
Anyway if you use another method to find good levels then it's ok. I mean this is not the number 1 method to find levels

Jeez... It's a tutorial on how to find good levels, not how to differentiate good from bad. So yes, those are good ways, except for grammar. There can always be bad grammar in a level, either because of the creator not being fluent in englush, or just simple mistakes that he/she overlooked.2011-08-19 21:27:00

Yeah that?s right but I don't mean those mistakes (I also do them).
I mean if someone writes like this for example: "wasup murky here and i present to u Weaping angel wings! Now this was made by the great RusterG! I had Permission to publish this by the creator RusterG. Have fun BTW button layout on button wen u get in".

This is a level description from a level on the Cool Levels page. http://lbp.me/v/5-b1nq

I mean things like "wen" or "your" instead of "you?re" or "u" instead of "you" using slang or using no punctuation.
Of course you can always make spelling mistakes (There are some in my tutorials) but when I say bad grammar or spelling mistakes I didn?t mean those.

I get what you're saying about english. I can usually tell the difference between 'bad' english and bad english. I think that may have been a better term, although it's a little nebulous as to what it means.

But a key way to find good levels that I feel you over-looked is to look in forums also. It's easier to discern if a level is good based on the information provided in a thread and as a general rule of thumb if someone cares enough about their work to post information of it here or elsewhere, it usually isn't complete rubbish.

I agree, improper grammar does not automatically render a level "bad." If somebody (mainly of foreign origin) does not use proper grammar would you be less likely to play? It does not reflect time spent of the level either.2011-08-20 02:09:00

I try to play all levels that are posted in the level showcase here or in other forums unless that person just posts something like this:
"Super awesome platformer"
and that's it. no level description, no pictures, didn't even take the time to use the LBP.me tool. They won't even put a LBP.me link in. Forget it, if you aren't proud enough of your level to put some effort into the thread, then what kind of effort did you put into making the level?

Yeah, it comes down to was time spent on this? Is it clear that that the creator took the time to actually create something? And do they seem to care about what they have created?

And to biorogue's point I also will trawl the level showcase looking for threads that don't have many responses to help out fellow creators. BUT usually the reason that there are only a few responses is because it is a 'Super Awesome Pletfarmor!'. Some aren't but you go to the effort of doing some detective work (as there is no lbp.me link) find the stage, see that it may not be that great, play it, take notes, write constructive feedback and... nothing. The creator doesn't respond/thank you or anything.

This comes back to obvious care. Broken english can still convey that the creator cares. And as Scorpskull mentioned he is also non native english speaker, some of his tutorial videos have 'bad' grammar but the reason his Youtube channel is so big is that obvious care.

I believe that by "bad grammar" Scorp didn't mean a few innocent and unintended errors, but something in the likes of: "MeGa aw3sum lvl ur gunna love it". Everyone does mistakes now and then, but deliberate SMS speech is something only kids and iliterates do. It's not a random chat room we're talking about here, it's online content people are looking forward to enjoy. I just can't enjoy deciphering words instead of reading them. It's a disgraceful habit speaking this way, and it makes me imagine the people who write like this as a bunch of ignorant trolls.2011-08-20 23:17:00

That?s exactly what I mean!
My English is far away from perfect or even good but I try my best with a bit of help of the internet or a dictionary
It's at least good enough to talk to native English people so that they can understand me (most of the time ).

For my it's even harder if someone use grammar that is that bad. I don't know much about English sayings or stuff like that so sometimes I don't even understand it. Sometimes they don't even use a whole sentence...
It also happens to me often if I read something in German on the internet. Some people just don't care about their spelling which is really sad

i gett what you are pointing out with your view on grammar, but my bud on the PSP side form Finland sucks at english, but his levels are amazing. I think he runs his stuff through a translator, but most of it comes out not so well2011-08-21 04:13:00

Hey ScorpSkull, next time you make a new level, do you think you can you do more time lapse videos? Those are really inspiring and helpful 2011-08-27 22:28:00

I?m not sure about that.
Those video are very hard to make. For my first time-lapse video I had about 10 hours of game footage. I can only do that when I have a very clear plan for the level.
The gap between playing around with ideas and begin to make a level is fluent. So I never really know when I should start recording.

I also like these kind of videos but they are not easy to make...

Nice tutorials. Add some music or something though because it gets so quiet...it also gets creepy because there is no noise, especially when I'm alone at the house D:2011-09-06 16:15:00

*pops his head round the door*

Just to wanted to thank Scorp for being a pillar of the LBP community. He's ace. (And he knows he is, so I'll shut up about it.)

Oh, and while I'm here, let me just mention that apart from custom music I'm also available for speech bubble proof-reading and grammar checks! 'Cos I agree that it's an important way of adding that little extra sheen to a good-looking level. Just look at how immaculately this post is written...!

Okay, going now.

*runs off*

Quick, simple question. On your Pong level, you have it so that when your cursor is over a song, it displays the details down below. I've tried to do this by placing magic mouths on a chip, connected to a selector, but it won't let me change it to subtitles. Even when I try to, it still appears in a bubble. I haven't tested in play mode yet, I'm not yet set up for it, but am I doing it wrong?2011-09-14 14:06:00

You need to place them on a Sequencer then you can set Subtitles to Yes.

Useful but a question arises. How could you use this to dynamically switch control methods. If the player is in a controlinator can you have another controlinator and a move sensor set to swap?2011-11-23 20:32:00

I have a setup for this as an experiment. I will see if I can make a screenshot of it tonight.

Hiya. I need a tutorial which teaches how to link 2 published levels together.
I just can't seem to get the stupid thing to work!
All other explanations are useless. They only mention that the levels need to be published.
That's not helpful information. Need a comprehensive guide, please.
