transferring PS3s... export both LBP2 AND LBP1 profile?

Archive: 8 posts

**** UPDATE: i have since done the transfer and my account of the steps i took are listed below ****

i apologize if this has been answered somewhere but i've been searching and reading posts for about an hour now and haven't seen this specific question answered.

to cut out the unnecessary back story the current situation is that i have a fat PS3 on its last legs and i just bought a new slim PS3. i'm going to do the data transfer tonight. i know that to transfer LBP stuff properly i first need to go into the game and export the profile, and then import it (again via the game) on my new system. my question is do i need to do this for both LBP2 and LBP1, or will doing it for LBP2 pull over the LBP1 information??

my guess is that i'll need to do it for both games, but i'm not completely sure as LBP2 does indeed use your save data from LBP1 (prize bubbles, level creations, etc.).

anyone know the answer? many thanks.

why not just do a complete system backup in your system tools XMB? you will essentially clone your old system onto your new one. you can either backup to a portable hard drive, or you can do a system link and directly connect the two PS3s together to do the transfer.2011-04-15 18:45:00

i've already done a system back up in anticipation of my fat ps3 fully crapping out, but have sine read on the net in multiple places that a backup of your ps3 system can ONLY be restored on the system which created the backup. the only way to move data from one system to another (other than piece by piece with a USB stick, and that won't get protected data) is to physically hook the two systems together with an ethernet cable and use the 'transfer' utility.

also, even then LBP profiles will not work on a new system unless you export them via the in game menu on the original system, bring over that export to the new system, and then import them (via the in game menu) on this new system.

my question is do i need to do it for both LBP1 and LBP2, or will it be sufficient to do it just for LBP2

given that your lbp2 profile imports things from your lbp1 profile, i would assume that would be sufficient. then again, copying your lbp1 profile is simple and requires very little space, so why not do both to be safe?2011-04-15 18:58:00

yeah i mean you're certainly right, do both to be safe. my concerns are this.

1) if i do both, does it matter the order that i do them in? presumably not but possibly doing LBP2 before LBP1 might cause problems (probably not though, and even then i'd imagine i could just RE-import them in the proper order)

2) it might be a race against time. i had my fat ps3 fixed, and it crapped out 2.5 weeks later. i'm picking it up again tonight after being fixed a second time and dont' know how long it has. i'm paranoid that it will die during the export / transfer

No, the order will not matter. LBP2 will ask you to import new objects if it detects changes in your LBP1 profile. It will not delete things from your lbp2 profile simply because it does not see them in your lbp1 profile.

I understand your time issue, so I would backup lbp2 first. Your profile is probably around 20MB or so, it should transfer near instantly after you do your backup in LBP2. Your LBP1 profile should be as simple as copying the save file and any level exports, iirc.

awesome. thanks for that info about LBP2 asking to import new objects. i think this is the order of what i will do:

1) export LBP2 data and copy it to an external for good measure
2) transfer fat ps3 to slim ps3
3) export LBP1 data and copy to an external
4) import profiles on slim ps3 (LBP2 export should be on the slim hard drive from the transfer, and i'll have to copy the LBP1 profile from the external)

i'll post here after everything is done to let you (and whoever else might run across this thread) know how things turn out.

Success! here's how everything went down.

1) on my Fat PS3 i started LBP2 and from the start menu backed up the profile. because i've never done this before and wasn't SURE, i also backed up every level on My Moon individually (press Square when a level is selected on My Moon)
2) i started LBP1 and backed up that profile. as i had already backed up all of my levels individually in LBP2 i didn't bother doing it in LBP1 (that would be just silly)
3) i saved these backups to an external hard drive (not necessary but i'm paranoid)
4) i connected my Fat PS3 and my Slim PS3 and did the data transfer. this process is outlined here (including telling you to back up your LBP data: http://us.playstation.com/support/answer/index.htm?a_id=1935
(note that even though it says both systems must be updated to system software 3.15 they in fact seem to have to be updated further. my slim came loaded with system software version 3.40 but when i went to do the transfer it said i needed to update. My Fat was already at version 3.60. once i updated the slim to version 3.60 everything worked fine)
5) i shed a tear and said goodbye to my Fat PS3 (it had freaking PS2 backwards compatibility ******!!!)
6) i started up LBP1 on my slim and noticed that actually a bunch of my stuff was already loaded up, but not ALL of it, which i thought was odd. from the start menu i restored the LBP1 profile backup file. my guess is that all of the stuff that showed up before i restored the backup file was from before the Leerdammer patch (which created this backup functionality and changed the way LBP1 saved data)
7) i fired up LBP2. it asked me if i wanted to import stuff from LBP1, and i did. slightly annoyingly i had to play through the intro level again before i could get to my pod but it wasn't that bad because, well, it is impressive to marvel at how well even the intro level is put together. once in the pod i restored my LBP2 profile via the start menu.
8) after quitting out of LBP2 i realized i wanted to double check that my DLC was working fine so i powered it up again. oddly, it asked me to import my LBP1 data again. my guess is that this was because i had since restored from the backup file, but i'm not sure. i tested the first Marvel DLC level and it worked fine. for grins i quit LBP2 and started it up a 3rd time. this time i was not asked to import from LBP1.

so everything went just swimmingly. after seeing how the process goes, i do indeed think that Thegide is correct above when he says that it will not matter what order you restore the profiles (LBP1 or LBP2 first) as LBP2 asked me if i wanted to restore the LBP1 stuff again after i restored the LBP2 profile.

i hope this write up might be helpful to someone in a similar situation, although i don't wish this upon anyone.
