TROLLZ? TROLLZ=LOLZ. I remember that time when someone trolled me over messaging. I replied 'ha ha ha' every time. Worked a treat, they got scared and confused.2011-04-15 17:07:00

Depends on the troll. Sometimes it can be effective to troll the troll, but in general it's best to ignore them like spam emails. Other solutions depends on where the trolling is happening. If it's just a messenger then block is your friend.2011-04-15 20:19:00

Lol, I once met a Troll on Call of Duty Zombies, I just had fun with him, because I didn't wanna deal with him.. So I started speaking nonsense about Aliens and Spaceships.. Worked out pretty well... He left me alone lol. So, to win the fight.. I blocked him first.. So next time someone bothers you just say "ALIENS!! THEY CAME!! IT WAS A UFO!! THEY WERE AWESOME!! DOG CHOW TASTES FUNNY!!" 2011-04-16 00:13:00

"Troll" is such an overused word on the Internet.

Even if your not the "troll" in a situation, you can still easily be the most annoying.

best thing to do is ignore them completely, if you can't just delete the msgs and block the person, also report them if the msgs are inappropriate. but the best thing to do is completely ignore them, usually they get bored and give up.2011-04-18 07:42:00

Its best just to ignore him (or her!)

But its more fun to go noob on the troll. LIke in call of duty, when i find a troll, i made a cass. just for him!
Or when i am a host on LBP,i like to return to pod, then turn off my PS3. If they want to finish the level, then they need to replay the first parts. It could be rude, but the troll gets the massage that they are being anoying.

I have a "job" of being a moderator for a community. I don't think I've ran into a serious troll, unless you count someone who's attention-seeking.

(Important note: I'm not saying that all attention-seekers are trolls.)

Hehehee... TROLLS! I love trolls. Don't get me wrong; I don't like how they write nasty comments or **** on your level.
In case you didn't take or haven't taken or aren't going to take a psychology as a high-school subject then you should just ignore them, but if you did take, you should be able to argue with them. Of course I'm suggesting to get back to trolls, but if they annoy you to a level where you can't stand them, just write a comment like:
''You know, you're just wasting your time, but I thank you for entertaining me with all your comments...'' or something like that. But you should propably just ignore them.

I think the distinction is that a trolls intention is to provoke a negative reaction for their own amusement.

My intention is to provoke further discussion - If someone else reacts negatively to this, then that's their problem, not mine.

Well, troll has become a such overused word.
I think that when you decide to go and speak your mind on a forum, you should take into account that you may meet trolls, and that "they are a part of the game", part of the system and they add some fun spice.

One of my real life friends attempts to be a troll... I tell him he fails miserably at it (and he does) and then he tries to troll me... I usually end up outsmarting him and making him say, "FFFUUUUU" before do anything else. Now though, he's starting to outsmart me... oh god narwhals and rockoons.

This is directed towards anyone who thinks they are being trolled.

You must first ask yourself this:
Is this person a bonafide troll or just some guy with a brutally differing opinion?

To avoid the argument from escalating, and possibly feeding the troll, do is not respond with a hostile comment using the word 'troll', because whether they are or not, you won't offend a troll by calling him one. It's like encountering a bear and saying "Hey! I see you, bear!" They wouldn't be offended by that. The best thing to do is respond calmly to the person.

Remember: Not everyone who swears a lot or dislikes that thing you love is a troll. A jerk with a differing opinion will usually just insult the thing you like, and maybe give an explanation why he dislikes it. A troll likes to enrage people do get a rise. They're pretty alike, but usually it's obvious to tell the difference between the two.

Now I myself have encountered a few trolls in my day. They aren't all evil demon spawns from hell as the internet describes them. Some are actually so bad at trolling that it's downright funny.

Most of the advice in this thread has been bad advice. Don't toy with them or outsmart them (even if it's easy) or any of that other nonsense. Just deprive them of the attention that they're after and they'll go somewhere else to find it. If you can't handle their abuses, then you either need to grow a thicker skin or report them to the authorities... or disconnect your internet

I see it as playing devils advocate... when everyone is in agreement, I feel the need to offer a counter position. If this means I get viewed as a troll, then so be it. To me, I am merely balancing out the view-points.

My intention is to provoke further discussion - If someone else reacts negatively to this, then that's their problem, not mine.

Funny, I see it as trolling. It's one thing to have a contrary opinion and to state that opinion and hold a discussion about it, but when you stir up trouble for trouble's sake, I see that as trolling, even if you label it with some high-minded jargon.

Furthermore the attitude that "that's their problem" when people don't like what you do or say has always bugged me. This kind of attitude extends to a lot of things. I'm kind of going off on a tangent and I'm sure Macme isn't guilty of these, but this kind of attitude taken to its extreme will justify people playing their music so loud that it bothers the neighbors (it's their problem that they're bothered, right? My loud music isn't bothering me), swearing in public (I can't help it if people are offended by my bad behavior--they should change their attitude so that I don't have to change mine), and a myriad of other anti-social behaviors. It's an attitude that people in America in particular have taken and run with to a ridiculous extreme (though I'm sure it's bad in other countries too) with people who don't give a **** about anybody but themselves.

Now I'm not saying you should always walk on eggshells and if somebody is looking to get offended and they stick their toes under your feet as you're walking, that's their fault, but if you're walking along, you should at least make some effort to watch out for and avoid stepping on other people's toes even if you think they're being silly with their beliefs and sensibilities. Those people are just as important as you, their beliefs and sensibilities are just as valid as yours if not moreso and they deserve at least a modicum of respect. [/rant]

Most LBP trolls are 12 year old Deadtro1 wannabes. Its not hard to outsmart a 12 year old, much less one stupid enough to emulate LBP's most famous troll (And completely fail at it). Any troll worth half their salt would never fall for any of the things you guys have listed here- Not true trolls just in the same way Sam's Choice is not true cola.

This statement is the embodiment of the decay of human rational thought. The direct avoidance of offering a counterpoint simply because it might offend someone is the very definition of mental stunting- Avoiding thought because others might not agree. Forcing others to consider and weigh a viewpoint other than their own is not only healthy, it is a staple in the process of understanding and empathizing other human beings. When people refuse to state opinions that might offend another person, for the SOLE REASON that it might offend someone, you begin to slide into "Politcal Correctness", which leads only to censorship. I cannot stress enough how incorrect and downright unenlightened your viewpoint on the issue is- Basically, you classify any opinion stated that is not common concensus as "trolling", a crude and reprehensible way to dismiss any opinion you do not approve of, and I strongly advise everyone to ignore this viewpoint in its entirety.

There's a simple "troll test" to see if someones just a troll (and therefore to be ignored) or wether someone is just being argumentative.

Say something intelligent - if their response is stupid then they are a troll - therefore - ignore: Do Not Feed The Troll.
If , however, their response is intelligent, then they are probably just being 'contrary' and you'll probably get a good debate out of them.
I've made many friends who initially viewed me as a troll - because I said something they didn't agree with, but after a lengthy debate we end up as friends, because I'm actually a reasonable guy... if someone proffers a good counter-argument rather than just starts trading insults - such as dismissing a well thought-out and reasonable argument with a "You're just a troll" comment.

Opinions are there to be changed, they are not supposed to be holy or sacrosanct - they should not be fixed or absolute - because nothing in this universe is. Even our best current understanding of anything is based on alot of assumption and 'filling in the blanks'. Nothing can be stated with an absolute certainty - which is why having a 'contrary' opinion is actually helpful to having a greater understanding of any topic you care to mention. Even if it is just that it helps you better understand exactly why it is you hold a certain opinion in favour of another - ie; is it based on evidence or on personal preferance.

Not everyone that starts an argument, or holds a differing opinion, on the internet is a troll - and it's not helpful to suggest they are (some would even say this behaviour itself is 'trollish&apos.

It takes two people to have an argument.

(Me: unless you're arguing with yourself!
Me: Oh just shut up will you, you troll! )

Flattery sometimes works, for those less experienced trolls:

"You seem like such an awesome guy... do you mind if I give you my e-mail and password? I can just TELL you are a kind, trusting, thoughtful person who wouldn't ever insult someone immaturely..."

They'll explode after that. or they might explode when you tell them the password part. or maybe they'll explode later on, when the password you tell them doesn't work.

I have dealt with so many random trolls over the past 2 years with my PS3. I had to learn from my idiotic mistakes and then figure out the best way to make them go away.

The best way I have found is not to be intelligent, but to be annoying/rude back. I tried so many things, but all that crap didn't work. :/

All I do is just say random things like: POTATOS WILL KILL YOU IF YOU RUN INTO THE SKY GOING UPSIDEDOWN!

Or: I LOVE TACOS TO EAT WALRUSES AND BABY SEALS!

New Thread: How to deal with people like this.

I would leave you alone under any circumstances if you were ever to message me with that because any sane person would now be under the impression that you have some odd kind of tourettes or other mental disorder :/

I'd be like "Leave the special person alone Luke, he probably has rocks to go admire"
I understand you may have the urge to reply, but if you are going to then why make yourself look silly in the process?
We do all have block lists for a reason right?

From my experience, most trolls are trying to get a specific response out of you and it's usually pretty easy to figure out which one they're looking for. Most of the time, any response you give other than the expected one will deter them, if only little by little. If they are particularly experienced or persistent however, well I dunno if I can help you there. Ignore them I suppose.2011-04-28 12:44:00

Pretty much all trolls are young (like me) so outsmart them by sending them mathematical proof of division by zero. The system of their PS3 may implode, and if you're lucky, the troll's mind will collapse on itself, making a minute black whole which will feed on the troll's existence, leaving them to fade from the essence of spacetime itself... Of course, this goes against the laws of relativity (special relativity ((e=mc squared, mind you))), thus I have calculated that only a minor supernova will occur, but due to the fact that it will be so close to Earth's gravitational field it will rip a hole in time and turn what could have been black whole into a white whole. This will emit light and matter to an extent that the troll's brain will fall under pressure and create another black hole to oppose the white hole, creating an atomic explosion. This will end the conflict of the troll's mind. And make a lot of people lose their car insurance.

Or just copy/paste the above message and send it to the troll to confuse him/her.

I've delt with a bunch of trolls. Most of my (used to be) PSN-friends were all trolls. I've myself been called a troll, but it was trolls whom called me a troll, so that doesn't really count, eh? The thing about trolls is, they become stronger as you argue with them. Do not feed them. As fast as you find out there's a troll, ignore him, kick him, block him. Once again, do not feed them. Do whatever you can to not argue with them, because trust me, it's not worth it and you will never get a decent debate out of it. Their answers are mostly things like "omg, u suck u pedophile. /Yes, if you can write properly you're APPARENTLY an adult who is trying to seduce little kids through LBP/.2011-04-29 18:35:00
