GameRant article. (http://gamerant.com/nintendo-wii-2-announcement-e3-cj-79302/)

The recent story that the Wii would be dropping in price to $150 next month has raised a few questions among experts. With E3 coming up in June, the timing of the supposed price drop seems rather suspicious. EEDAR analyst Jesse Divinch explained that an announcement of a price drop usually precedes a much bigger announcement from a company, leading many to believe that Nintendo will have something huge to show at E3 this year.

M2 analyst Billy Pidgeon further explained that a price cut announcement would usually suffice for E3 itself, so to make said announcement before E3 would only mean something bigger was being saved for the event. A new game wouldn’t be considered big enough, and with the 3DS already released (arguably early), the possibilities are narrowed down to something that’s been rumored for some time now: the next home console from Nintendo.

This does raise a few doubts, however. The current generation of consoles is at its peak right now. Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are getting plenty of titles to satisfy their audiences this year, while the Wii has cemented itself as a family-friendly console, but one that has no killer apps coming out. Announcing the next generation when the current is not finished (for the competition anyway) may seem strange, but it might be needed, especially since the Wii is very dated in its specs. Pidgeon himself even questioned the developers’ ability to promote the new generation while still keeping the current one relevant.

Wedbush Securities member Michael Pachter questioned the price cut announcement, saying that no one outside of Nintendo of Japan would even know about a cut until at least three weeks before it, citing September as a much more realistic time for a cut. Let’s also not forget that Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime dismissed the Wii 2 rumors about a month ago, although he did hint at a price drop at the same time.

Two more GameRant articles:

New HD Nintendo Console Confirmed (http://gamerant.com/new-hd-nintendo-console-confirmed-robk-79461/)

Game Informer was able to verify with several sources that Nintendo will indeed showcase their next console in Los Angeles for E3 2011 in only a matter of weeks. Furthermore, they?re reportedly already presenting the unit to publishers to allow them to begin development on games in preparation for the late 2012 release date.

This is all good news for several reasons, the most obvious being that publishers will hopefully be able to create some quality launch titles for when this new Nintendo console launches ? Something that they should have done with the 3DS. The other great news is that Nintendo is likely joining the PS3 and Xbox 360 with a console that can actually support modern multiplatform games and graphics. If you look at the vast majority of games making headlines in recent months (years?), barely any of them are playable on the Wii.

This brings us to the most important question of all: what kind of power will this console contain? With the PS3 and Xbox 360 being 5-6 years old, the new Nintendo would have to be able to outdo them in processing power, right? This is where clarity is needed as there are conflicting reports. Game Informer confirms that the unit will support HD (could you imagine if it didn?t?) but does not know if it is comparable to the PS3/Xbox 360. One source describes the console as being, ?not a gimmick like the Wii.?

New Nintendo Controller With HD Screen (http://gamerant.com/new-nintendo-controller-hd-screen-robk-79490/)

CVG just found out some additional info about the console?s controls. As we reported earlier, we expected an upgraded motion control device and a new controller design since Nintendo?s current peripheral selection is dated. Their sources reveal that it won?t be anything like your familiar Wii remote but it?ll actually be an entirely new design featuring a built-in HD screen. Do you remember the Sega Dreamcast controller with the VMU?

Details on the screen?s capabilities or whether or not it's a touch-screen (a la DS/3DS) haven?t been revealed but we expect a lot more info shortly.

Everything so far from the power of the unit to the accessories of the new Nintendo console seem on the up and up, but until we see the goods and check out the online capabilities, we can?t really compare to the competition just yet. But you can certainly get excited by the words of one of CVG?s sources:

?Nintendo?s plans sound unreal. Publishers are already planning launch titles and it's all very exciting.

?The hardware is even more powerful than current HD consoles and backwards compatible with Wii. The controller will be all-new and has a HD screen on it.?

Double post for new article.

The new console is now referred to as Project Cafe.

Tech Specs for New Nintendo Console Surface (http://gamerant.com/new-nintendo-console-tech-specs-jeff-79625/)

Contrary to earlier reports that claimed Nintendo?s HD console would be vastly more powerful than either the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3, the reported tech specs place the power of the system just a bit ahead of Microsoft?s current console, while direct comparisons to Sony?s hardware are harder to make.

Project Cafe is rumored to pack a custom IBM PowerPC CPU with three cores, along with an ATI graphics processor from the R700 family capable of running shader model 4.1. Memory is the big question for now, with a minimum 512 MB of unified RAM generally considered to be a reasonable expectation. Other sources suggest that Project Cafe will include a Blu-ray drive. Whether Nintendo intends to allow movie playback on the console, or restrict Blu-ray discs to game content as they have done with Wii?s DVDs, remains to be seen.

This design offers a number of benefits to developers. For starters, porting titles from the Xbox 360 to Project Cafe should be extremely simple, given the similarity of the proposed hardware to Microsoft?s current console. How great would it be to play graphically high-end, cutting edge games on a Nintendo console ? say, Battlefield 3 or Crysis 2? Pretty great, I?d wager, if the new Nintendo controller design is up to the task. Given the news that Nintendo is, uncharacteristically, already courting developers for the new hardware, this strategy makes a lot of sense.

At the same time, using a design that is very much in line with its previous consoles will allow Nintendo to maintain backward compatibility with both the GameCube and ? more critically to the mass of mainstream consumers who embraced the system ? the Wii. No need to trade in your copies of Wind Waker and Wii Sports Resort; they?ll be playable on the new system.

Never loved Nintendo machines, never loved their characters.
And the release of a new machine only concerns me because it's too far from the release of the other big companies.
I don't see the need to "change" generation now, since this one has still so much to offer, and I don't like Ninty's idea to have more than one machine in the same gen.

I think it's about time they announced a new console. The current tech is considered pretty outdated by now and the fact that various developpers (DICE, Ubisoft, ...) said they were desperate for a new console only proves that point. Sure this GEN still has a lot of offer (and will probably do for several years), but i'm actually really interested in what they could offer with a tech that's more up-to-date.
I don't think this is "too" early to announce a new Nintendo. (announce it at E3 this year and start production late 2012 sounds pretty reasonable to me as i can't see much future for the Wii these days).
It wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft/Sony will announce their new console somewhere in 2012

cheers,

The thing that I find about the possibility of Project Cafe is that it almost isn't really "new" for most gamers. This looks more like a game of catch-up in graphics with the 360 and PS3. It's at least great that it will be backwards compatible with the Wii and Gamecube. Plus people who like Nintendo while still enjoying some of the more hardcore games don't have to buy multiple consoles hopefully.2011-04-16 18:51:00

Well, at least there isn't more than one machine. The Wii 2 will REPLACE the Wii just like PS3 replaced PS2. It's normal continuity.
On the portable world though, we can clearly expect revisions of the 3DS in the same generation, like the Gameboy Advance gen and DS gen before...

What bugs me when machines doesn't get out in the same-ish time frame is that developers will start to mess with franchises and there will be much disparity between the various iterations of the same game.
I know releasing stuff it's their business, but as a gamer that doesn't want to own more than one machine (don't want to invest sick amounts of money, don't have the time to play that much, and other reasons), I don't care.
And when I see lack of future planification, I don't feel respected as a customer.

If there's a six inch HD screen AND lots of buttons on the controller (To accommodate for Gamecube and Wii exclusive buttons), exactly how big will the controller be? They can't make the buttons tiny, but you also don't want a massive controller, but it sounds to me as if it might be a little on the large side.
That would not be very good, if you ask me.

New Nintendo "Project Cafe" Controller Design Updates (http://gamerant.com/new-nintendo-controller-dual-sticks-robk-79914/)

We also found out that, like the Wii, Nintendo would be going the innovative route with their controller designs. This time, their controller will contain a 6-inch touchscreen, making the controller a tablet of sorts. It also has a built-in camera and is more precise than the PlayStation Move in terms of motion controls.

The latest updates explain that the touchscreen, albeit not HD according to reports, is able to stream full video from the console. That means, while playing a game at home, you could get away with not needing the TV on. If that works as it sounds, this is an entirely new type of gaming where you can turn on the console and play from elsewhere on the controller. How far you need to be from the unit for it to work is another question entirely.

The controller isn?t just touchscreen and motion however, as it also has two analog sticks so you can finally jump in on modern gaming fun! Believe it or not this is the first main Nintendo console controller to support dual-stick functionality. Don?t tell us the Gamecube controller had two sticks, because it didn?t. The C-stick was not a joystick.

Sounds like Ninty is trying to pull together all of it's gimmicks into one thing, touch screen, motion sensing, and two analog sticks!

We better hope they can pull this off, otherwise their screwed over... So would the motion sensing mean that your swinging one controller around with two hands? Or probably just a tilt sensor... Taking the controller away from the TV and continuing to play the game sounds like something that would be useful for when you have to use the restroom... Innovation at it's finest.

New Super Mario Bros Wii with online multiplayer. I want this.
Not sure about on the Wii 2, but I heard Super Mario Bros will make an appearance on the 3DS.

Summary of new rumors from Gameolosophy:

Expect Nintendo to roll out the red carpet for third parties so their games don’t get overshadowed. Nintendo has been preaching to third parties that third parties won’t get screwed this time around, so if you’re expecting a ton of amazing first party games at launch…well…think again. Nintendo wants a launch that creates confidence in third parties again so expect very few first party games at launch similar to the 3DS.

Star Fox is coming. I can’t say when. Very good chance that it WONT be at E3. I am hearing Star Fox is coming for the new Nintendo system, but it is very early in development.

Nintendo solved every storage issue a third party could possibly have with the new console. I don’t know if it’s a harddrive or a different, cheaper way to store data.

Almost positive that we’ll be seeing Pikmin in some shape or form.

Don’t listen to anyone who says new Nintendo console will launch by end of 2011. They are idiots. This holiday season is all about the 3DS and Nintendo’s E3 show will focus on that.

A Resident Evil game is in development for the new Nintendo system. I don’t know if Capcom is developing an RE spinoff or something part of the “main” Resident Evil series.

Took out some of them because it was getting long. Here's the GameRant article with the full list and analysis. (http://gamerant.com/wii-2-pikmin-star-fox-jeff-80420/) Personally I love the idea of a game with the style of Star Fox 64 being made with modern graphics. I still love that game.

Leaked Wii 2 Image & Controller Details (http://gamerant.com/nintendo-wii-2-image-controller-details-robk-80833/)

While the common thought is that these are fake, they do follow the outlined design elements listed so far from the ?inside sources.? Yesterday?s news said it would look like a modern SNES and this follows that.

Now, some people are either getting very creative or this is the design of Project Cafe/Wii 2/Nintendo Stream.

As for the controllers, the images above may very well be accurate as well. Here are some new details on that front from Kotaku:

6.2″ touchscreen.
Controller has 8 buttons.
Not a replacement for Wiimote and not all games need it.
Wii 2 might be able to use Wii controllers ? either way it will have controllers of that type.
Two players can be using two different controllers at same time ? for new types of gameplay?
System streams data to controller screen.
Controller camera can be used to take photos, put in game while you play ? another offering for innovative gameplay.

Imagine playing Call of Duty on a Nintendo console and placing a camera down, letting you see the camera?s perspective through your controller while your TV is your main view. Same goes for controller vehicles, remotes, etc.

This sounds... Good actually...

If I hadn't sold my Wii games-Err, if I hadn't sold Brawl, I would be much more excited.

One feature I'd LOVE, and would make me fall in love with is a headphone jack, right in the controllers.

Imagine playing a splitscreen FPS, and each player only being able to hear their own screens!

Yes, clearly the Wii has jsut been a money farm for Nintendo to get huge amounts of capital to invest in research of technologies man has never seen before so they can unleash upon the amazed masses the most powerful gaming console the universe has ever seen!

Everyone, sell your PS3's and your XBOXes! Theres a NEW WII! Undoubtedly it will be hardcore just like the first Wii, right guys?

Guys?

I'm far from impressed, and honestly, this seems like a cheap catch-up move from Nintendo. Wii isn't getting any critically acclaimed titles, they arent getting any huge articles, their games almost universally get mediocre ratings- Even the juggernaut that was supposed to be Epic Mickey turned out to be strictly average. THe motion controls arent floating the boat any more, so Nintendo has to sigh, admit the money run was fun while it lasted, and finally get serious about making gaming consoles again. Its a long time in coming, but it would have been nice if they didnt try to make next gen during this gen...

The controller camera sounds interesting, but I doubt it will ever be really used since developers will likely still develop primarily for microsoft and sony and then port to the cafe system, which means its a function they will have to make AFTER the game has been finished, and it will likely be used for largely tacked-on features that you dont need and will likely never use.

The problem is this half generation that Nintendo is embracing.
It always places itself in the mid of a gen.
The wii is in the mid between the PS2 gen and this one, the next "Wii" will be between this gen and the next.
It's a marketing choice that I don't like and won't support.
Really, the house with the most selling system ditches it.
That's not cool towards customers, especially in an unstable economy.
Then, a machine with a pad that costs like a PSP...come on...
Then the other 2 will feel pressure to release a new system, while the actual one have not been fully tapped yet.
I really wish they flop from a customer standpoint more than a gamer standpoint.

If the cost for the new console is anywhere near the predicted figures, well...

I mean, sony tried the whole super mega ultra power platform (With super mega ultra price tag) and look what happened. It came out six hundred bucks, no one bought it, and it almost deep sixed SOny's gaming department. They had to chop-shop it and drop it to half its original price before it was finally able to swim rather than simply sink. Looks like Nintendo is going to swing aaaaallll the way into the other extreme- WHere their last console was cheap and weak, the new console will be a beefmonster with an appropriate price tag. I mean, the controller alone costs as much as a handheld. Heck the controller IS a handheld. ANd like I said, the screen will likely see very little functionality- Definitely nothing that the same game on another platform wont get in a different form. I can see it being used cleverly in some games- Putt ing a map or the inventory on the controller screen in a Zelda game for instance- But beyond a few instances the price tag just doesnt justify itself. Of course, statements like that are a bit premature- We'll just have to see how things go at E3.

I also take issue with the phrase "Innovation reinvented". The definition of innovation is to reinvent, so its like syaing "reinventing reinvented". Its stupid.

Also, let's not forget: Foolish is the man who bets against Nintendo

I'm not a big Nintendo gamer, but I do respect what they do - which is pretty much ignoring everyone else and doing their own thing - and doing it well...

Can't say I fully understand what Nintendo are aiming for with this console though... the main USP seems to be touch screen controllers, which is really, really weak. It could be useful for some things - notably feeding player-specific info and keeping certain interactions hidden from others in multiplayer games, though if that application actually warrants a such a device (and the price increase to accommodate it) I'm unsure - we'll have to see what they can actually do with it - no doubt Nintendo will come up with some stuff that makes it feel worth it. At this point though, it seems very much like we've reached a point where all gaming hardware must haz gimmicks or it'll never see the light of day... Which is a shame.

On the other hand, if they call it the Nintedo Puu, I think all will be forgiven

Guess Sony will find a way to integrate first PS3 and PSVita, then eventually PS4 and PSVita in a very similar way than WiiU and its controller.
Sony is keeping its systems very open.
Then I guess either MS or Sony will announce their TRUE NEXT-GEN system before WiiU releases or just after a short while.
