A Journey Retaken

Much like George Lucas I decided to remake my old stuff in an effort to cash in some more without having to do much work and updated A Journey, which I originally published almost 2 years ago, for LBP 2! Woo!

Seriously though, A Journey Retaken is a remake of an LBP 1 level (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=15593-A-Journey), but my main motivation was to get more plays and hearts. The main motivation was to bring it closer to what I originally wanted it to look like but couldn't because I hadn't had the technical know-how or patience to make everything pretty and shiny. And it was one way for me to get back into creating big levels without having to come up with innovative and interesting new gameplay.

But I didn't limit myself to adding stickers and a few lights here and there. I made an effort to smooth out some gameplay niggles and redesigned some sections that were just ugly. The swamp section which some of you may remember is now completely gone. I never really was happy with that bit and the LBP2 lighting doesn't seem to suit itself for dark, murky swamps. So, I replaced with a volcano/lava section!

Here is a picture of almost the whole level:

I hope you enjoy it.

This level was a pleasure to play (I think I must have missed the LBP1 original so it was all fresh to me).

I particularly liked the number of different environments you mnaged to pack into this journey. The huge cavern with the great looping vines was my favourite - I took a picture and was going to upload until I saw that everyone else has gone for the same shot - so I'm clearly not alone in thinking that's a dramatic set piece! The slightly stylised volcano section came a close second though.

You managed to include just enough difficulty in terms of working out how to progress to keep things interesting throughout. The only section which gave me any trouble was the green river area. I made it out of there by chance (I finally resorted to grabbing things at random) because I couldn't see the sponge which lifts you up. It was tucked up just a bit too high. That may have been intentional though.

Having the second half of the level in the castle added variety and I loved the little balloon ride at the end.

The only issue I came across was on my second run through (trying to improve my score having got squished by the platforms on the windmill twice out of sheer clumsiness). When I came to the part with the tower with the diagonal platforms which collapse and drop you down into the cosy room with the grandfather clock, I was killed by plasma on the way down and re-spawned at the checkpoint on the floor above that cosy room. I couldn't progress any further as there was now no way of getting into the room below and accessing the jump pads. I'm not sure what if anything I did differently on the drop to make the plasma fry me! Not sure if that was a bug or intentional. Anyway, I gave up at that point but Ill have to replay; having a score of 40 is just too shaming, lol!

Very enjoyable level - looked great, lots of nice details in the landscape and still with a lot of the charm of an LBP1 level.

Thank you for the detailed feedback, Shropshirelass.
I've just made some updates to the level but now that you mention the bit with the plasma I will go right back to it and add a checkpoint so that you spawn in that room once the stairs collapse.
There is actually a game camera at the end of the river that should focus on the sponge. But for some reason it just doesn't work all the time. No idea how to fix that.

To quote my update notes I've just left on the level:

Update! - 1) The "stupid stairs Crap" as GHOST_BLASTER_ so eloquently put it have been fixed. The steps are now a lot more stable. 2) More lights added for those with dark screens. 3) Purple bounce pads are now standard bounce pads making it a lot easier to reach the top floor of the castle. 4) Tried to fix some winches, but they are fickle beasts for some reason. 5) Attempted to make the grab thingy at the end of the river more visible. However the game camera may still act up. Blame the game.

I played it, and it was pretty good. One issue is the part with the waterfalls in the cave you have to climb, then land in the next room. If you go down onto the waterfall material on the far end of the waterfall room, you can simply walk through a hole in the wall to skip the section above and get to the next room that way. Unless that's intended, you may want to block that off, although the player ain't really missing much except a climb up and a climb down. In your picture it's the area after the volcano section in case it's not too clear where I mean. Was an overall fun level though and nothing to really spoil it much I found. 2011-04-15 13:16:00

Yep, that's on purpose for the more explorative types, but also to give people a chance when the winch doesn't work. (For some reason winches are a lot weaker in LBP2.) I've actually placed some lights there to hint at the alternative exist.

Since we can't respond to reviews in-game or on lbp.me I'm going to respond here to the following, because I know that Luos frequents this place:

Not always as multiplayer friendly as I hoped.. but the shear size, overal visuals and gameplay where enjoyable most of the time.. some annoying layerswitching here and there and a few missed scorebubbles opportunities (where you could have placed em).. but all in all enjoyable!

I consciously removed all scorebubbles, because a) I thought they didn't really fit into the level and b) not including them allowed me to save some thermo, which was really necessary to have everything run smoothly and load quickly.

Agree with you on the layerswitching.

This level was very good and awesome.. but i dont know why it just didnt have the same "Syroc" feel too it... I was let down a bit by the visuals. Definately a good level. but not as good as the original.
Syroc feel? And here I'm going through the trouble of making ever level different to the previous one...

Maybe you will like one of my next levels more.
