Community Development Project

OK I just had an Idea and I would *REALLY* like to try it and see what happens.

Here it goes.

I am going to make a level that consists of five equal sections, displayed by different materials on the floor. Furthest left will be an entrance (and some more but more in a minute) and furthest left will be a Scoreboard.

I am going to build in the first portion one fifth of a level - publish it and make it available to be copied.

At which point someone (We will agree on the people and in what order later) will copy it and I will remove the level from the game. They will then build section 2/5 and so on and so on.

Some Rules (Top of my head so more could be coming, some going)

The background, theme etc will be agreed on prior to beginning.
You have the full width and height of your section to build in.
No decorations until finalisation - be considerate of other people needing thermometer space!
No online collaboration, it must be five original works in one.

My hope is to get a Neopolitan Ice Cream of a level that will display the differences in five peoples creativity and style. I think that a level like this would embody everything that LBP is all about and something the creators would have envisaged.

Tell me what you think, I will have the level ready to publish soon but I am new here and I would love some help in picking the right people to pass it on to. It isn't that I am distrusting I just want to see this project through.

Thanks for the time,
Kingenbo

Sounds great, exactly what LBP should be! I can't help personally, but I encourage people to get involved. I'd love to see the outcome.2008-12-02 02:12:00

Sign me up.

Yup, that's all I have to say.

EDIT: Actually, I do have more! I think to make things run smoothly without having to constantly pass the level around, you should allow decoration. I think each person involved should have exactly 1/5th of the themometer to work.

Okay well I'm gonna start building my piece now and should be done in the next 2-3 days. We should be alright doing it a fifth of the thermometer each but don't feel overly constrained by that.

I've sectioned up a level and it definately isn't exactly a fifth each but I don't think thats too much of a biggy, you can go up as well as across just so long as it's accessable from the next players perspective!

I'm a litle bit excited! hopefully this grows and we get the people we need.

EDIT: I think it's best if we revise it to four people, then we all get to the next big line on the thermo

great idea. it's like those drawing's i did in primary school where a group of people would take turns drawing certains parts of a person on one piece of paper and then you would unfold the paper to see what your group had drawn together. 2008-12-03 10:58:00

There will be a slight delay in me making my segment as I just haven't got that much time atm due to assignment deadlines et cetera but I will do as much as I can on it so shouldn't be too long.

Cheers for the positive feedback guys, thought it might be a good idea.

EDIT: Got completely bored of normalisation, the OSI model and database connections and decided to get designing and I'm definately on track. The level is split up into four almost even segments ( the middle 2 have 5 units more each, not much) and I have almost finished my first draft, although admittedly I could have done it in half my alotted space!

I'm really impressed with what you can pack in when you keep an eye on the thermometer, this game continues to enthral me when I give it a chance. One little niggle is that if I remove a light from my elevator, the level disappears, bit weird.

Also I have kinda themed it on an application for entry to heaven, how do you feel about that? I'm not biting at religion, I've just taken a look at the whole set up as if it were an office building sort of thing. It'll probably get moderated but I don't think it's offensive.

I'll notify when I'm publishing.

Cheers.

P.S. I thought I'd edit rather than post again as it contradicted what I thought I'd do earlier, sorry if I should have just posted again.

This whole thing sounds like an interesting idea, I wouldn't mind giving it a shot if I have the time. BTW its against the rules to post twice without some one else posting in between anyway, got a warning about that.

What's the theme of the level? Since you are almost done, I am guessing you have decided.2008-12-08 20:43:00

Or it could be a testing ground. Are you a bad enough dude to go to heaven?

Ha ha, I like that, I hope people arent offended by it, personally I am quite religious and it doesn't bother me. So long as it doesn't poke fun at any religion in particular.

Oh one thing. I recommend you don't give everyone 1/5th or 1/4th of the thermometer, because then the last person would get more room than the first. The bottom of the thermometer always fills up faster because you're introducing lots of new materials to the level.2008-12-08 22:43:00

Sounds like I cool idea - I would like to contribute if there is still a space to fill. Just as long as it isn't gonna get all stressful with deadlines and stuff... 2008-12-08 22:58:00

Whoa guys a lot of feedback in a short space of time! Okay let me see what I can address here..

The theme is honestly up to you. I want this to be a true rendition of four or five different peoples personal style. I am by no means a great creator but that isn't the point. There is a saying that a camel is a horse designed by a comittee and I want to see what a level made by a few different people will look like, your section of the map is yours, play with it!

As for deadlines I would certainly hope they wont get pushy. I mean if it gets ridiculous then yeah you'll probs get a message but otherwise take your time, littlebigplanet isn't a job, it's a passion!

The thermometer is a tricky part. Ultimately this is a community project and I want/need your input, please don't see this as my project, it's ours people! Trial and error will no doubt play a part but for easies it just seemed that splitting it up equally would be fairest, I've gotten around it by using just cardboard and stickers but however people wanna do this is cool with me as long as it's the consensus, I don't mind being first and filling up.

Basically we could go up or down with the numbers. We could have 2/3 people build and others come in to decorate parts within the limits of the builder or someone builds an object for someone etc etc

I'll pull a major latey tonight and play around, I deleted gods elevator so now i gotta get a new one to work or just put it on a winch

Cheers for the interest guys.

I think things would get rather confusing with all the publishing and decorating little parts of the level and republishing. I think it would be best to just split it into segments, however 5 is not really a community project.

Even five segments is stretching it in terms of personal imprint so i think it best to go to four.2008-12-09 00:47:00

How about you create a box and share it as an item in a level. People can make whatever they want inside that box, put in an entrance and exit in the edge, then notify you here and give you their box.
Then you get everyone's boxes and organise/position/stack them to make a colaboration level?
You could make several, if some boxes wont fit in one level, save them behind for another box level.

Hey people, mega sorry that this has stalled but I have been away from home with my aunties family as she recently passed away and as such have had no PS3 for a while. Throw in the fact that it is now (literally) christmas and it doesn't look like anything will come of this, bit gutted but I just got the MGS pack and I wanna play around with this.

cheers guys anyway, I suggest you lot take the idea from me and do it? I don't mind if you guys do it without me, would be real cool to see the end result.
