I NEED help on making a good looking explosion!

I NEED help on making a good looking explosion that is Detailed and looks like it was spent a lot of time on. I'm not looking for a way to make the explosion BIGGER in general, I mean a way that it would effect the environment in a BIG way. I want to make it look as close to a real special effects explosion as possible. Can you guys give me some components that would help make this come to life?2011-04-12 05:35:00

It completely depends what is exploding, but for an epic one, try:

- A good sound effect - one of the destroy sounds may fit or retro if that's your game
- A global light change from normal, to bright orange then yellow then really yellow/white (most of screen is yellow). Then back to normal light for your level.
- An invisible smoke machine starts on remains of object after light goes back to normal
- High pitched whistling sound for a few seconds as if ears have popped.

The above is very easy to sequence and that way you can reuse it in other areas of your level. Hope that inspires you a little.

A slight shaking of the camera can be a great effect too, but be careful not to over do it. I'd say sound effects are really important as well, think about what is exploding, where it's exploding (small room, large open area) what is nearby and how will it be affected. As for the visuals of the actual explosion itself, I'd try anything and everything, see what does and doesn't work.2011-04-12 12:29:00

Use an orange light set to foggy with a smaller less bright foggy light in the center. Have both set on a dimmer and activated by a countdown timer for aout 0.3 secons. Do this in combination with destroying holo with the explosion effect, emitting a piece of circular gas, rotating piece of holo on fire. Set the emitting contents with a lifetime the same or slightly more than the 0.3 second light activation. Add a few sound effects. Maybe 4 otr 5 different explosion effects and the pluge set the -12 for an echo. Add in a cam shake to really sell it. Smoke emitters are also useful for the smaoke cloud afterwards if the explosion is big and epic.2011-04-12 13:25:00

Good call on the circular gas idea. Liking the echo option too.

Hey thanks guys! I'll be sure to take all that and use it to my advantage. Also, it's a big missile that explodes below a train bridge (not over water, like the freeway bridges like in San Fran but for a train) and causes the bridge to break apart near the explosion then a train comes and breaks of the rail and falls downward to the ground causing an even bigger explosion down there. Try picturing that in a movie or something. That's how big it is going to be.2011-04-12 20:00:00

Steve Big Guns, I have run across a problem. How do I make the light stay in the middle of the explosion without the explosion blowing the light away? EDIT: Anyone can try to answer this. It would really help.2011-04-14 02:09:00
