Voice acting - Having a little trouble.

Archive: 4 posts

Hey there,

I've been trying now to do voice acting for a very long time - and it's kinda needed for a level series that I'm working on. I don't even need the voices to say anything - it could be mumbo jumbo for all I care - it's just that the voices given in story mode don't do it for me. I mean, I've used some of them, but I need more voices, and they need to sound right. This is just so they can be used whilst someone is talking, but not using the story mode voices over and over - otherwise it seems like it's always the same person, or the expression of the voice doesn't quite match.

Anyone got any ideas or advice on how to do this properly?

Thanks!

You say that you've been trying and you're asking for advice but you haven't said what's going wrong when you try.

First advice I can give is that generally the PsEye or Eyetoy are much better than bluetooth headsets from what most people have said (though it might depend on the brand/model of headset). Some people have had good luck with other usb mics, but I've never seen a definitive guide or anything.

Second, get the room you're recording in as quiet as possible. Turn off fans, running water, and anything else you can hear. If you can hear it, it can potentially make it into the recording. Of course your ps3 will be humming away so you may want to record shortly after you first power it on (before it's had time to heat up and get its fan into overdrive) of try to put it back behind your tv stand while recording (try not to stick it anywhere too dusty--the ps3 doesn't like dust). Hold the mic perfectly still or better yet, set it down and prop it so that it's still when you're recording: even if the cord moves a tiny bit, it can cause drastic noise in your recording.

Third, and this may not apply in your situation since you're talking about using gibberish, over-enunciate. Exaggerate your mouth/lip/ movements and the syllables. Kind of like you would after somebody has asked you to repeat yourself for the umpteenth time 'cuz they couldn't understand you (only without dragging out each sound). It will sound silly to you when you're doing it but if you do it right (it can be tricky to strike the right balance between exaggerating and over-exaggerating) it will make your recordings sound much better: easier to understand and more feeling/inflection.

Fourth, use a pop filter. You can buy professional ones but there's no need to get that fancy. Some people have reported success simply from draping a bit of cloth over their mics, or you can make a frame out of a bent coat hanger and stretch a sock or a pair of nylons over it or something.

Another thing I've found with the eyetoy (I don't have a pseye so I don't know if it's only the eyetoy that does it, but I never experienced this with my bluetooth or rock band mic) is that the mic will turn up its recording volume if it's too quiet so it will catch all kinds of nastly little clicks and stuff that I can't even hear. Once I start talking, those noises go away (the mic sensitivity adjusts to my speaking volume so those fainter sounds fade out) and when I stop, they come back in. I've been meaning to do some experimenting, but I'm thinking that if you make a bit of noise (hum or say "blah" or whatever) right before the recording countdown finishes, it should adjust the volume to the desirable level and it won't have time to go back down before you start saying your lines. Then hit the circle button a split second after you finish your dialog so it doesn't have time to go back down. It's a bit annoying and I really wish they'd just given us more direct control over the recording volume as well as the ability to trim the edges off an audio clip, but you do what you gotta' do sometimes.

Sehven said it all. The only thing I'd say is you'll never get a anything as good as MM did. You can do what Sehven said to get a little better quality. But until they let us use our computer for create mode and maybe allow us to record voices with a program we will never have great voice acting. It's basically going to sound as good as it does on a Bluetooth when our playing multi player. I think voice acting was sorta thrown in the there as a final perk. I don't think it's something they really payed attention to. It's like we are beta testing the voice acting feature until the next game where it will be more of a polished feature. Maybe instead you can use a series of sounds that are active when they are triggered by a sequencer. Say if you had a robot that you wanted to speak. You can find a cool robot sound, place however many speakers you want on a sequencer. Then change the sound modifier on each individual speaker. In the end you'll get robot talk. I've done this with the burping sound.2011-04-12 07:29:00

Thanks.

Ill use some of the advice you gave and get back to you. The problems that I'm having is that my voice always sounds so wierd - and it just... IDK, doesn't sound like how I want the character to sound. But I'll try this and post back here.

Thanks!
