Lost in the Dark

Archive: 7 posts

Hello there! I've completed this level a while ago, but was to busy with new levels that I totally forgot to post this one. Also, someone from a Dutch gaming website (http://www.ps3hype.nl) made a video of the level and posted it in the news, so I thought it would be nice to finally share it and post the video (I edited the video, because the source contains three full levels, and I only needed this one). Also: I lost the sound while editing it, so I just used one of my favorite tracks as background-music.

Short description:
You're trapped in a dark cave. Try to find a way out, using light, speed and a little of your puzzle- and platforming skills.

If you like the first minute of the video, I suggest you go and play it for yourself! I mean, it's all about the first experience and the element of surprise when playing a level... Watching the whole vid would ruin the experience in my opinion.

Let me know what you think about the level, and/or give me some feedback, if you wish. Thank you!

Enjoy the video!

Now I've got my first level published I thought I'd spend some time on other peoples levels.

I found 'Lost in the dark' to be very atmospheric with a genuine sense of fear when entering pitch black areas. The snake enemies were well done and moved really well. The effect of the sun breaking through into the cave at the end looked great too.

For down sides I really think that the check point before the firery rock fall should move to the end of it, so that a jetpack is not needed. The presence of the jetpack breaks the mood/theme of the level.

First of all: Thank you! I'm glad you liked it.

And you're right. It does break the theme. I think I'll add another checkpoint. Right after the falling rocks. This way, the player will only see the jetpack if they would die before reaching it. And my guess is that this will happen only occassionaly.

My thoughts:

Pros

Good atmosphere

Cons

Obstacles are repetive and boring. Jump over this, run away from that.

If you die at a certain part, you can get a jetpack, which does one of two things. It either causes you to become hopelessly lost trying to find your way back, or it breaks the whole level since the jetpack is untethered and you can fly anywhere.

An enemy that I encountered had turned over on its back, making the brain unreachable, and the enemy was impossible to jump over.

Nothing truly outstanding in the level.

Sorry to be so harsh but I really couldn't find anything else to add to the pros column.

I had fun with the level, but I was playing it on my crappy TV (Not my parent's HDTV) so I had no idea where I was going sometimes. I trusted my instincts to press forward into the darkness anyways and came out the victor in the end.

Personally, I really enjoyed the level and hearted it. The atmosphere was great and the artistic nature of it really appealed to me.2008-12-04 04:11:00

Well, I appreciate you being so honest.
Perhaps I focused too much on the design instead of the gameplay.

I'll try to add a few new gameplay mechanics and fix the jetpack/snake-problems.
