CC13 - Sub-Cellular

Archive: 12 posts

Hey guys!

Just thought I would share with you my CC13 entry, "CC13 - Sub-Cellular". Take an underwater adventure though the human blood stream in a vessel inspired by the HIV lentivirus. The theme of this level is inspired by my own work as a scientist and celebrates the completion of my PhD. Hurray!

Controls:

X - Dive/Surface
O - Exit Capsule (when surfaced)
Left Analog stick - Auto-Navigate (Directional)

This is VERY cool - went through it last night. After this contest, would be neat if you added 360 degrees firing ability to the craft, and added enemies (maybe right stick firing). Could become an entirely new genre of arcade game.2011-04-11 13:52:00

Alright, played it. Has a really unique design to the level and the sub is quite interesting. it took me a minute to realize I definitely was in control of the sub, after I figured out it was pretty fun. The only thing that I would recommend (if you want to make it more of a level and less of an object showcase), would be to have it be an optional race. Just have player sensors activate the race gates somewhere out of sight. It will also provide replayability.

Overall, well done.

The sub actually does fire in 360 degrees, but only the pods that are facing the direction are active at a given time. I'm going to work on the design a bit before the end of the contest to try to improve how well this works. Thanks for the suggestion.

Just played the level and here is some little feedback...

+Awesome visuals! They were so awesome and it really felt like you were in someone's body.

+Really good contraption! It looked great and it had some unique controls that I had seen only one time before on LBP2.

+Unique on its best! Everything in this level is unique and the contraption was the originalest I've seen already in the competition.

-The only con I have... The controls were a little unpredictable. Ok, you can go to a direction that you want, but sometimes, the sub goes to that place in a weird way.
I once wanted to go right and the sub first has gone up and then down to get to the right after that. So, only the controls were unpredictable.

Other then that con, the level was awesome and the best one I've seen in the competition so far!
Really unique concept and great visuals! Other then all the other submarines!

Good luck in the competition!

Thanks Yoda,

Yes, I know what you mean about the unpredictability. It's an inherent characteristic to the craft, which is moved by combining winch forces. I didn't want all the winches to aim at the same wall spot... the point was to get something like Dr. Octopus motion, where the claws purposely target different parts of the level in relation to the craft. The net result should be that the craft moves in the direction specified, but by grabbing ahead, and to the side, etc.

How to smooth out the motion? I don't know, honestly. How do you tell a winch to stop at an arbitrary length when its retraction no longer favors the intended direction of motion? Well, I have some ideas, actually, but a lot of the randomness has to do with the asynchronous retraction, and the fact that retraction speed is a constant and not a function of the arm's vector.

Complicated stuff. I just about quit on this design 2-3 times due to the difficulty in getting what I wanted out of it. Anyways, it's done, and I might tweak it some yet, but I'm also eager to get back on my main projects.

Thanks for the feedback!

No problem TheGide! I like to give feedback on great levels!
You also don't really need to improve it because it already is really awesome and really unique!
