Magnetic Fields

Archive: 26 posts

Hi there! I?d like to let you know I published my newest level yesterday night
I was building stuff like crazy the whole week to be able to publish Friday night or Saturday morning to capture some extra weekend plays, but I couldn?t finish it till yesterday late night.
I?m still finding small bugs, but I think it works fine at the moment.

This level was going to be a small part of a new platform level I was making, but the UFO idea with the magnetic balls had so many posibilities, that I decided to make the entire level with the UFO and the magnetic balls.
I know LBP is not the best place to throw a level full of puzzles, but I tried my best to make it easy-but-fun (if this is even posible) and putting the puzzles in increasing difficulty.

So? I'd like to know what you think if you played it, and if you still haven?t, give it a go!
Thanks!

Hey there, (and sorry about my poor english).

As a coincidence, I'm currently working on a puzzle level with magnetic stuff. When I saw your level earlier, I was worried about doing something similar, but hopfully it's not. And after going through your level, I have to admit that it's brilliant. I love puzzles, and I really enjoyed what you've done. Everything was working fine, the ufo controls are perfect, the puzzles are good, there's a lot of variety in the solutions, and lot of fun too (the flipper sequence was really enjoyable). In my opinion, it was maybe too easy, but I understand that the LBP audience won't finish the level if puzzles are too hard or take to much time to be finished. But even if I found it quite easy, this level is what i love in LPB ! You have combined lots of good things in a very clever level !

Thanks for publishig it!

I agree with the previous post. I think that the gameplay/ puzzle solving was a bit on the easy side. Despite this, I still found the game an absolute pleasure to play. What you have here is a great idea brilliantly executed. Good job, and thank you!

I played this level before I saw this thread. I remember you from LBP1 and you always make great levels. This one was really interesting. One thing though I got stuck to the walls a couple of times but it wasn't anything serious. Just thought I'd let you know.

Also how did you make the rotating part on the bottom of the UFO?

Thanks guys for your feedback. I agree with the issue of the UFO getting stuck by the walls. I've just updated the level with new material properties and it really seems to work a lot better now.
I also agree about the simplicity of many of the puzzles, but I'm reading many comments saying the level is too HARD!!.
It makes me sad to check LBP.me and reading many sad faces with comments like "Good level but no price", "Too hard", "***", or "it was good till water came up and I couldn't go on"... etc. What kind of players are in LBP2??? 4 years old kiddies???
Anyway, you can't never say "never", but I honestly need to get out of this thing. I'm starting to work in 1 or 2 weeks and I'll be out the whole summer, but when I'm back I doubt I'm going spend all my playing time creating for nothing.
Maybe I'm a bit burned out after 2 years and a half creating, and I've been through ups and downs, but I never felt this need of leaving before.

Thanks for reading my depressing thoughts

Played this last night. Thought it was great fun! The magnetic idea works really well and was just taxing enough to maintain my interest without getting tedious. Well done again.2011-04-11 12:00:00

I think the gameplay not being overly challenging made the level more enjoyable. It kept it relaxed and the challenge can come from trying to get a high score from beating it faster rather than making it difficult to the point most players might get annoyed or whatever. I found it a fun level to play and some parts that looked obvious were actually a bit more complex to figure out which I think is a nice touch. Makes the player have to think a bit and not rush into every puzzle if they want to as said get a high score from the race. 2011-04-11 13:16:00

You think thats bad?? I got a frowny because my stormtrooper was carrying a frying pan. You got a fun and easy level, but you know how some players react to the weirdest stuff...its not worth fretting over. Enjoy your break....

Well, I can see that at least more than 4000 people enjoyed your level, more than 1000, so I won't say that it's creating for nothing. But I agree that lots of players in LBP put a sad face on levels without finishing them, and sometimes for stupid reasons. But at least, as a lot of people played your level, some of them tell you why... I don't have a lot of play, and don't have a lot of "nay", but those who gave me a nay never explained why...

Anyway, congrats about the level, and the MM pick !

I was REALLY tired and teary-eyed.... about falling asleep.... last night when I saw you had a new one out. I played it, and it's really fantastic!!!! But, I was so tired I couldn't finish it. Going in tonight to get through it. From what I saw so far, it's done really well. Once again, I'm impressed with your visual style. You seem to be be reinventing yourself lately with every creation.

As for difficulty.... you have such a wide range of players in LBP2, I'm not sure it's possibly to make everyone happy and do a GOOD puzzle-based game. For my vote, I'd say don't worry about the difficulty or if some 6-year-olds are unhappy - they'll just move on to a Mario game and they will be happy again 5 minutes later.

More feedback when I get through the whole thing tonight - so far, awesome!

Don't feel bad about taking a break, or not creating - it's a game, it's supposed to be fun... create when you're inspired. I think you've earned enough recognition so you have nothing to prove.... you could also end up like me - by the time I did Lunar Lander and Sea Dragon, I couldn't care less whether anyone played my levels - I just wanted to see what I could come up with to entertain myself.

Well, they are mostly kiddies, so your assessment is partially correct!

I would honestly not be bothered by the frownie faces. Its says more about the community than anything. Consider that as of 2:45 your time,

4% of players frowned your level, while 33% smiley'd your level.
5% of players frowned my level, while 33% smiley'd my level.
4% of players frowned Morgana's level, while 37% smiley'd her level.

I use these three as examples because they were all published around the same time. Mine came first, then yours a short while later, then Morgana's later that night. What's interesting is that you have accumulated about 12,900 plays. I have about 5,200 and Morgana has about 9,000. You and I were Pick'd.

I'd say you were the most successful of the three high-caliber levels published that day. You're sitting atop Cool Pages (which as much as I hate those things, is an accomplishment) and Busiest. Face it poms, you've become a popular creator, and it illicits envy from many creators (myself included). This can bring hate, because that's what haters do.

In short, what more do you want?

another POMS level? I'm on it! queued up. Dang, this work day is going to drag on now.

but when I'm back I doubt I'm going spend all my playing time creating for nothing.
Dude, I love ya, your levels rock..but are you insane? Have you checked your stats? As I'm typing this, I see that Compher has submitted the stats for your review.
You have a level that's been published less than 24 hours and has already been MM picked, and has 13,001 plays!!! actually played 14,041 times and 13,001 strike that..13,003 unique plays. almost 2,400 hearts, 5,000 likes and 538 whiny a$$ babies who disliked it. Hell, I like it and ain't even played it yet. Who gives a flying fornication about a few sad faces. Your level is picked!!!

My level is been published for a long time and barely has 50 plays, well 58 now, *polishes knuckles on chest* I'm proud of that. somebody played something that I made. Wow. If I got picked and had 13,000 plays, I'd soil my drawers, I'm telling you I'd wet my pants right here and now and be dang proud of it. People would be like, "why'd you pee your pants?" and I'd be like, "BECAUSE I GOT 13,000 PLAYS IN LESS THAN A DAY BABY!!!", now go get a mop.

man, don't sweat the small stuff. Who cares about some frowny faces, just look at all those glorious happy faces sitting over there smiling at something that you made, you created. You can't please everyone all the time, so bump 'em.

dang, you got me fired up and I haven't even played the level yet, IT BETTER NOT SUCK, or a frowny face is coming out of my pocket. Just kidding poms, I'm sure it won't suck and will play tonight.

ps. 271 more people played in the time it took me to type this. I'd kick a cat to get 13,000 plays. be thankful you have any plays. I've played levels that were really good and after three weeks of being published, only had 20 plays. so be grateful for what you've got

Played last night. Pretty cool, and the magnetic effect worked and looked great.

Good puzzles, mostly easy, with a few that took a few tries.

Well done.

As for sad faces and useless comments, "boring", sucks", etc, you'll get those no matter what. Like Comphermc said, its more about ratio. If your in the thousands for plays, and have a 3-5% boo ratio, that is pretty good. Plus, as your level gets more popular, more people will get jealous and downrate it just because. I had one guy on my level who took the time to give a sad face to every positive review of my level. Some people just love to hate.

Good job, and just keep the positive comments etc. in perspective with the bad ones.

Oh, just saw that this was MM picked. Well contracts I guess. Now you can expect the hate to really role in. Especially since tour a popular creator who got their level played and picked within hours of putting it up.2011-04-11 16:12:00

OMG! MMpicked!
OK, an MMpick means that the makers of LBP liked the level, and this makes me kind of "forget" about the kiddies, but man, the LBP community is a nightmare!
And about leaving or not, one thing is for sure, I only work 5-6 months a year, but when I do, I work ALL day. So, this is my last level for a long while. Who knows what will happen in October.
Thanks for your comments guys! They really cheered me up

Awesome level, Poms! This level is filled with exciting puzzles.

VISUALS:
The level is well decorated and corner edited, and I liked the moving snow forest effect which you used the "Cosmos" background effectively.

SOUND:
Great use of "Factory of Better Tomorrow" interactive music and nice sound effects.

GAMEPLAY:
The usage of the saucer is brilliant. You effectively used the follower tool to make the magnetic balls follow you as you activate the magnetism force, and the puzzles involving them are a lot of fun. The pinball at the end of the level is a blast.

OVERALL:
It is magnetically awesome. You continued to amaze us with such creative levels. A yeah vote, a heart, and a positive review.

This was pretty awesome I have to say.

It would fit right into the lbp story mode. It was intuitive and very detailed visually. PLUS. it was picked almost instantly.

You totally work there don't you?

Haha nice job

Poms,

Another terrific level. You are one of the creators on my Always Play list, so you will be missed while you are gone. But six months away gives you plenty of time to think up wild new ideas!

Very fun and innovative. Also, quite an eye-pleaser. I hope you'll incorporate a similar concept in another level because it is unique and different.

My only complaint would be that the craft could be a bit cumbersome when you encountered a boundary wall. I have no doubt that you tinkered with it and got it to run as smoothly as possible; it's just the game that does this.

Just a great level, though. Hope to see more in October.

Hey Poms.... interesting thing happened when i played it a bit ago - the room with the bombs you need to drag down to the left, then squish - not sure whether I did it right, but I dragged all the bombs down below the skull and squished them, then tried to activate the switch to the right. The door never opened and I was stuck in that room.

The next time I managed to get through it, but I'm not sure what happened the first time. If some people don't understand this room, could account for some sad faces.

Thanks Ccubbage. Same thing happened to me once or twice when testing. This is one of those mysteries of LBP2. There was an inverted magnetic switch that was supposed to activate when all the black balls were destroyed, but sometimes it didn't work. I got sure there was no interference anywhere, but still glitched sometimes.
I changed the whole sistem and now seems to work fine. At least the 10 times I've recently played it.
Thanks!

I got to play for a little while last night, but had to rush because of time. I really liked it, the puzzles were cool and unique. The overall appearance of the level was fantastic. Great job. I will spend more time with it this weekend so I can fully enjoy the level. Again, great job and thank you for creating it and sharing it with us.2011-04-12 21:02:00

I played this level the other day, and I was pretty **** impressed by it. For all the little kids you claim that are complaining about it, do remember that this game is rated E, lol. Never forget that fact. Anyway, this was also a very creative concept, and just the overall execution of it seemed very cool, what with all the magnetism going on. I will say, however, that I got stuck for a good 5 minutes on the part where you have to make the two wheels spin so that the balls can continue downards: a couple of the balls got wedged. I don't really know how it happened, but it certainly did. This might be why some of your players are getting irritable, so think about that much.

The level was also longer than I thought it would be. I didn't even make it to the end of the race in time. LOL. Anyway, I yay'd and hearted this.

I really enjoyed it, the puzzles were easy and the visuals were a tiny bit simple, but in the end I've never seen anything like it and in todays world where people just put "platformer" on the end of their level in the hope that will garner some safe-plays, I applaud your bravery

Of the 3 "mega-levels" that came out I have to say I enjoyed this one the most by quite a way.
