This is my most recently published level. It is my first attempt at making a puzzler game where the main point is to figure out how to get through to the end. Points are mainly awarded based upon how fast a player can make it through the level. I feel like it is relatively easy and intuitive but would appreciate feedback from fresh sets of eyes. My goal is to make figuring out how to progress through the level challenging, but not so challenging that it becomes frustrating.

Thanks in advance ,
J

Updates:
-Fixed the way the batter slides across the floor.
-Added an indicator to make the switch in the second room make sense.
-Added backlight on wheel maze to make sackperson easier to see.
-Added clarifying explanation in last section.
-Added infinite respawns.
-Added some movie cameras
-other misc. updates and tweaks.

Excellent level! Some well thought out puzzles and really well put together.

Couple of issues though. First was the second room where you push the battery across the floor. I had, and still don't have any idea what happened there. Sometimes it would move, sometimes it wouldn't, the switch on the left had no apparent effect other than turning the light on and off. I thought I'd be able to move it by gaining momentum and hitting it... Which did shift it but then it stopped again. In the end it eventually started to move after about 3 or 4 minutes of trying. Am I missing something obvious here?

Another issue was in the room after the maze wheel, when I dropped down into it I got stuck under the platform with the bounce pads. I had to kill myself to get out of it. Maybe try and slow down the drop in someway? I fell at such a fast speed that's probably what caused me to get wedged in the gap.

Other than that, good job!

Thanks for the feed back. As for the battery, I think there is an unevenness in the floor upon which the battery gets stuck somtimes. I'll fix that. The switch by the battery is needed in conjunction with moving the battery to engage the tube movment. Perhaps I should add some sort of indicator that once the switch has been flipped, you are one step closer to moving on. I'm not sure how you got stuck after the wheel, but I'll try to fix it.

Thanks for pointing all this out to me. It is very helpful!

Writing this as i go:
- Nice use of the green tunnel pieces
- Awesome 3D
- Some brilliant puzzles you got here
- The moving tunnels are very cool.
- Good idea with the unveiling fire switches
- it would be nice if you make it easier to see what's inside the spinning maze.
- lol nice trick with the invisible platform.
- liked that last one.

Overall, an amazing level with some very clever puzzles and good use of the 3D layer, deserves more plays.

I added a backlight in the spinning maze today (and other modifications) that should make it easier to see your sack person. Thanks for the feedback.

Oh hang on I've just noticed something... Your first image shows where you have put the battery... I didn't do that. As I mentioned previously I had great difficulty moving the battery, including pushing it into that gap. Instead it got stuck outside the gap and I used it as a platform to jump down the pipe. That's why I thought the switch was doing nothing because you have to activate them both before anything moves, so for me, it actually did do nothing!2011-04-10 01:22:00

Yeah that should be fixed now. And hopefully more intuitive.

Hello there,

As I've mentionned on the level's comments yesterday, it's very good ! Some clever puzzles, well balanced difficulty, fun, a good variety in the way you have to solve the puzzles. I didn't found any issue and really enjoyed it !

If you have the time, can you check my level ? Here is the link (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=54330-Dr-Who-Lost-soul-1P-Only)

Thanks !

If you have the time,

This was a fun level with some creative puzzles. I did fall through the floor near the big wheel room somehow... Anyway, I didn't finish it cuz I ran out of lives near the end. In the room with the fireballs, you have a bounce pad that allows the player to go back up and change the switches that control the blocks you use to cross. For some reason, I had a heck of a time navigating past that bounce pad to actually cross the fire pits on the blocks. This is difficult to explain, but you probably spent enough time with this that you know the exact spot I'm talking about. Anyway, it was troublesome for me, but not in a way that I think was intended. Also, I may suck (I must always include that in the realm of possibility).

Other than that, I enjoyed myself here.

Thanks for the feedback. I've been trying to fix floor issue in the big wheel room. I'll keep working on it. I've been thinking about replacing all the respawn points with infinite respawn checkpoints. I think this would insure that more people would complete the level. As for the final room, the idea is that you need to find the right combination of switch positions to shut off the fire blocks. By doing this the bounce pad deactivates. I'll have to add an explaination to avoid the confusion.

Thanks for the feedback. It is very helpful for me in the streamlining process. Because it is always hard to judge your own level in terms of intuitiveness, it is nice that you and others have taken the time to point out my blindspots. Thanks.

I just added infinite respawns in the more challenging parts, as well as a note with clarifying explanation of the objective in the final section.

I see. Well, that's why I left my lousy playing on the table as a possible reason for my struggles. See, I just made them so they were all one block apart and jumped over them. It was tricky but I almost made it a couple times. Anyway, I'll give it another go then.2011-04-11 00:33:00

I don't think the issue was necessarily lousy playing, just a part of the level that needed some clarification. Thanks for giving it another go, let me know if there are other areas that need tweaking.

Thanks,

Great level.

Pros:
Intro screen.
Fun puzzles.
Hints are given less and less as you go on.
It's a race. (I felt the pressure )

Improvements:
The puzzle after you back track through pipe far left I got squished on the spinning circle and broke the wooden door for the next area without needing to solve haha. On my second attempt I still couldn't solve it?
Lighting is white overlay? Maybe make lighting more colourful, but im being picky haha.

Final remarks:
I enjoyed it, and found little if any problems.

Okay, I just finished playing this level and It was a blast

Pros: original puzzles, impressive 3D effects, stuff i've never even seen before (invisible platform)

cons: Not so many lol. The only thing that happened to me was I had to start over since that area with the spinning giant circle crushed me. What happend was the light indicator was on when I got in the middle, but when i somehow killed myself It turned off and never turned back on thus restarting .

thats about it though, this level should get more attention

Hey man, thoughts on your level:

I usually do a 'good' and 'bad' section but you're a lucky one, as I thought it was all good! Really polished gameplay, I loved how intricate it all was with you bringing parts of what looked like scenery into the actual gameplay and transferring the player between the different rooms. The difficulty level was fairly balanced and the idea of making it a race was a great one. In terms of design I loved the use of glitch layers to create a really consistent background, which also added to the difficulty of some of the puzzles.

Just one or two very small issues - in the rotating wheel puzzle I didn't know that I had to get all the score bubbles to complete it, that seemed a bit counterintuitive as there aren't score bubbles at any other point, and you had a grabbable material which I thought was a switch. The other bit was the last puzzle with the multiple switches and blocks which are on fire - I wasn't sure here if I was meant to figure a way to douse all the blocks, or just some of them. In the end there were still 2 or 3 that were on fire and I completed it anyway, but I didn't know if I had did it right.

But other than those very small niggles, a really top-class level, no hesitation to yay and heart!

It seems like many people are getting crushed by the wheel. Did you end up going all the way around until you were underneath it? Do you think it spins too fast? I did some modifications to it last night, but as you point out it needs more work.

Since you played it I had changed much of the color overlay to match the green on the pipes. I agree it adds some cohesiveness to the level. I'm glad you found the puzzles fun.

I thought this played great. I only had trouble seeing the glowing ball that the sackbot follows because it was half behind the score HUD, and I struggled a little with the spinning wheel but thought that part was excellent as a result. If anything, I thought the look of the level was too common/simple, but that can be beneficial for things like the invisible platform section. More octopus? I like the perspective trick anyway, whatever you're doing to make the rooms look bigger. Looks more like a sticker illusion than a layer glitch or something, anyway, pretty cool effect and confuses you a bit more. The puzzles are just right, I think. Weren't too easy or too hard. Would play more!2011-04-12 01:08:00

Thanks for the positive and constructive feedback! I'm in the process of updating and have included some that you suggested. I've moved the glowing ball. I also agree that the level needs some aesthetic sprucing up. I'm adding more color. I'll republish soon with all these updates. Thanks again for the suggestions. I'm heading over to your memento film tribute now. I loved that movie!

Heya jnstin,

Great level, I enjoyed it. The idea of a wood-and-piping-based puzzle-world was really cute and basically what LBP most intuitively means to me.

My personal problem-puzzle was the one with...several switches, fiery bouncepads and two rows of green piping above. I pulled all the switches and put out all the fires, then noticed that one of the switches controlled a small section of piping. Then I realised I had no idea if the exit was on top of the upper pipe, in the top pipe, on top of the lower pipe, or what. What I'm saying, I guess, is that I passed the room but wasn't sure what I did or what I was supposed to do! Perhaps you could spawn an arrow pointing to the exit when that puzzle is complete.

Besides that, though, everything was neat and tidy. I loved the mad dash at the end. Took out my brother and his girlfriend, but it was an interesting chance of pace. Also, I got all the points. Haha!

Lol, what looks like a pretty standard and fun LBP2 platformer. I just queued it, so I'll make sure to play it later today, so look for a review by shimsok in your reviews section. In the meantime, do you think you could check out the level me and my crew have sunk hours into creating? http://lbp.me/v/y4n7x0

Thanks for the feedback. I hadn't considered that it would be confusing whether or not you should jump on the platform or in it. I think if you jump in the pipe (which would be difficult) the platform wouldn't go up. But I see what you mean by it being confusing. I'll have to add an arrow or something. Also I hadn't considered that in multiplayer, the first one across gets the points. I'll have to sell that more. "Beat your friends to the finish to take all the points!"

Thanks again,
Justin

yeah, well. nice level. the puzzles were great, not too hard not too easy. i also liked what you made wit h the green tubes. the optic was good too, i think it fits well with the puzzle gameplay.
the only issues i could mention are the spinning wheel -i felt through the floor- and that the sackbot is not good to see. maybe place a light on it or make a light follow it.

so altogether great level, yayed.
