Wizard: Chapter 1 - From Within (Beta Testing)

Hey folks, I've been chugging away at what will be my first LBP2 series under my main account. It's called Wizard, and it's a platformer, shooter, and puzzler all in one.

The official beta phase has arrived.

I am 99.9% finished with this level. It's actually two levels, with one linked as a sublevel. For those of you who played the original beta of the first level, you'll find that it's mostly the same. There is a whole second level tacked onto the end of it, though. When played together, it's quite a long experience.

My plan between now and Saturday is to really polish up the visuals and work out any kinks that come up. There might be a few tweaks to the boss fight yet, but nothing serious. Then, I'm hoping to shoot a trailer prior to publishing. Saturday sounds very reasonable.

(Keep an eye out for secret orbs. They are scattered all over the place.

There are no pictures of the enemy duels, but I'd prefer you experience that first hand. It progresses nicely, as does the way that you are introduced to different moves and abilities.

Controls:


Left Stick : Move
Right stick : Aim
R1 : Fire magic spell
R1 (hold) : Charge spell, which is stronger that the normal spell.
R2 (hold)* : Beam of Energy
L1 + Left stick : Roll (in the direction pressed)
L1 + Left Stick + x : Super Roll Jump (press x at the end of a roll)
L2 : Sprint
L2 + x : Long Jump
Δ : Use Health Pickup



Strategies:


Rolling makes you temporarily invulnerable to attacks.
Performing a roll jump will allow you to reach platforms that would otherwise be too high.
Health packs are hidden about the level. Seek them out to keep your inventory full. Using one will refill 1/3 of your Health bar.
Sprinting and using spells will decrease your Magic bar. They all have different effects, so keep your eye on it.
The Charge spell requires at least 1/3 of your Magic bar be full. It will take away 1/3. It will also lock onto nearby targets, and can strike multiple enemies at once.
To initiate a Beam of Energy, which is a devastating attack with limited range, you need at least 2/3 of your Magic bar full. It will drain for as long as it is held, and will turn off when you run out.

Then enter the following code: 7931

You will be given a key and linked into the level.

Hello there,I've tried your level, and as promised on the level feedback, here is some detailled feedback in a poor english :

+ The controls of the wizard are very responsive, and as you're learning them step by step it's really enjoyable to discover the power of the wizard.
+ The health bar & magic bar are clear, you know when you're hit and you know when you hit the ennemies
+ Visuals are beautifull, i loved the attention to details, how there is sparkles when you load your charged spell, the look of the ennemies...
+ The movie between the 2 parts is awsome. Really good work on it !
+ The search of secrets orbs is fun
- In the room below the elevator, I've trigger the switch, came back to the left side of the room and before going to the right, I tried to sprint+roll+jump to the left to see if there were a secret here, and was able to get to the elevator without taking the right path. I don't know if it was designed this way but i found it quite weird.
- During the elevator sequence, I fell on the left of the elevator. I don't think it's supposed to happen, but maybe I'm wrong.
- In the library, the shelf on the foreground was hidding the statue during the fight. I have to move left to see what I was doing.
- During the spider fight, I didn't understand how to escape the spider web. Was it a timer thing or do I havbe to move the left stick quickly to escape ?

Overall, it's a very good level, with a really clever gameplay, polished and fun to play. It's nice looking, the music is good, the movie is brilliant ! Really enjoyed it, and hope my feedback will be helpfull

And also thank you for your tutorials, I've learned a lot with them

Hey man - first off, thanks for your tutorials. You do a fantastic job and they've been extremely helpful for me in my own building.

As far as the level, I love the level and concept. Design is nice and feels fluent. My main gripe is the reliance on the roll+jump. That thing kinda annoyed me and made it somewhat frustrating to play. I left after the first little boss, but I'll be back to try it again and go further along.

Took me a second to know what you were talking about, but I think I've got it. You, sir, are sneaky. I will raise that platform up a little bit.

Sometimes you can slip between the cracks. I presume the bot was killed and you respawned as normal, right?

Yeah, that's the biggest gripe I have with the level as well. I love the way it looks too much to take it out. I always just run to the room on the left.

Both! It will eventually go away if you wait long enough, but it will go away faster if you move the stick around. I had the thought of putting some text to make that clearer. Since you said something, I will do just that!

Whoah! This is what you could describe as a game. It is very good looking and all mechanics are polished to nearly perfection.

My only gripe is that you can shoot trough objects allowing to kill enemies when you can hear them.

Apart of that it is perfect and it left me crave more to play.

Where, specifically, does this happen? I can put up hologram material to block spells, I just need to know where.

I suppose I can go through and add them all over the place, but I'd rather not.

When you are instructed to dodge enemies you can shoot them before they drop. And you can then also shoot enemies that are up from that platform (I heard them and then blindly aimed that direction).

Edit: I got one small spider at the boss to the area where is the checkpoint. No idea how it happened.

Great level, loved the boss but you should put a signal telling to press a certain button to get out of the web and also I fell down the hole where the spider goes down when you kill it, I'm not sure if that was supposed to happen.2011-04-09 08:41:00

Great Beta for something that I think will be an epic series!
Here is some feedback:

+Awesome visuals, everything was so polished and looked really good. The animations of the spells were really good and the costumes of all the sackbots were really cool. The Spider boss looked really good and the surroundings of the whole level were perfect! The menu is really good and well decorated.

+The Menu was awesome! The controls were explained really nice and the Options section was really good. Nice feature to be able to adjust the brightness of the level to your TV. Also loved the feature that you can choose how difficult the Level is.

+I loved the moves you could do with the magician. 3 diffirent spells who worked really well, a Sprint ability to run a lot faster. That one was really helpful if you needed to run a little distance. An awesome roll ability! I seriously Loved that one! The combination of Roll+Jump was awesome and gave me a great feeling to do those awesome stunts.

+The accuracy of the pointer was perfect. If you aim at the left, then it also aims perfect to the left and the spells go perfect to the left too. I didn't got it once that a spell has gone to the wrong side.

+Perfect cutscene between the elevator and the last part of the level! I loved the animations and the moves the sackbots did. They were awesome to see and it looked like you were looking at an awesome action movie! So yeah, perfect cutscene with awesome actions!

+Loved the 'Restore Health' Power thingies. It was a great feature that gives an extra special touch to the level because you can restore your health after a big fight. I also loved it that you can collect those BAM-tokens. I think that I didn't missed a single one and you really had to use some skills to get them. That was something awesome too!

-I don't know if this needs to be like it, but I couldn't kill those little spiders on the ground of the Big Spider Boss. That was kinda annoying because I lost a lot of points there. Maybe you should make them kill-able and make some new eggs who hatch and make new little spiders.

-I didn't knew how to shake of the Spider Webs of my sackboy. You should make a little sign there or show it with an animation. Yeah, the animation. Like, when you are stuck in a Spider Web, there comes an animation above you that shows you need to shake with the Left stick. That would be really cool!


Overall, this was an epic level! Great addition for detail and everything worked really well. It was an unique concept that uses a gameplay combination of Magical Fighting and Platforming. I'm sure the level Series will be an epic one, because this level already was so good!
Keep up the great work and I can't wait for the Series. Also, if you are not comph, I really suggest you to get that level key in the Key Lock Level and Play this level! You will really enjoy your adventure on this level and it really deserves its plays!
