There's really no excuse for not owning Burnout: Paradise at this point. That said, I don't own it. The value is definitely there, but you still have to be a fan of arcade racers to begin with.2008-12-01 18:52:00

Actually, racers have been the largest chunk of my gaming. And I've leaned towards the sim side, with Gran Turismo and the like, or realistically arcade racers. (Some of the Need for Speed titles, for example.) However, Burnout Paradise is complete awesomeness.

The only problem, however, is that although the overall open-city design is pretty stellar, the core racing model got weakened in the process. It's great when you're in the middle of the pack of AI, smashing and banging. But they don't use shortcuts, and you do, and they will otherwise take less-than-optimal paths while you do. So once you're out in front or off to the side, you're basically by yourself.

And since it's so open-world, there's not much focus on prime racing, on taking specific turns just right and all. You just drift it, mash on the boost, and don't crash. Which can be a load of fun, but it isn't especially deep. Especially multiplayer, since there's usually a disparage in player skill. Some take all the shortcuts, some stick to main roads, some run perfect races, and others don't quite know what they're doing. So racing seems much less involving, and there's a definite spread. It all seems more of a point-to-point navigation race, with some other people thrown in as times to beat over solid racing.

However, I'd bet that'd change a lot if you had a number of people all around the same level to go with, and racing around and using teamwork for the events that require it, etc.

Despite the loss in the racing, the new stuff works perfectly. Marked man is brilliant with the city design. Road Rage usually works well, too, just as long as people start in the same place. And the challenges are also fun, if usually fairly lightweight and the biggest challenge is getting people to do it.
