S.O.S. Doesn't really stand for anything....
Archive: 32 posts
I just found out in class that the letters S.O.S. don't even stand for anything. A common misconseption is that they stand for "Save Our Ship" or "Save Our Souls", but those are just misconseptions. If you could have S.O.S. really stand for something, what would you make it stand for? (Either make up an example or say which of the misconseptions is better.) | 2011-04-04 17:34:00 Author: theonlybub Posts: 690 |

I just got more info: First adopted for naval safety in 1906, SOS is a universal code for 'send help'. SOS in Morse code is as Kernal said above (dot-dot-dot-dash-dash-dash-dot-dot-dot). The letters 'SOS' mean nothing- they were picked because of the ease of sending and receiving the dot-dash-dot pattern. Phrases such as 'save our ship' and 'save our souls' came about after SOS was already established. | 2011-04-04 17:44:00 Author: theonlybub Posts: 690 |

Sink or swim. It's kind of like a reverse S.O.S signal but S.O.S backwards is S.O.S so therefore, somehow, it works. | 2011-04-05 13:52:00 Author: JonnysToyRobot Posts: 324 |

1918 states, "This signal [SOS] was adopted simply on account of its easy radiation and its unmistakable character. There is no special signification in the letter themselves, and it is entirely incorrect to put full stops between them [the letters]." All the popular interpretations of "SOS," "Save Our Ship," "Save Our Souls," or "Send Out Succour" are simply not valid. Stations hearing this distress call were to immediately cease handling traffic until the emergency was over and were likewise bound to answer the distress signal. {Site} boatsafe.com But to answer the thread State our solitude. | 2011-04-24 02:16:00 Author: Maxi Posts: 1176 |
