Space Escape Pinball - * Spotlighted! * Mm Picked! *

Archive: 50 posts

At long last my Pinball game is complete and ready for you to take a crack at it. I did a simpler version in the Beta as a 3 day concept when first learning all the new goodies and thus it seemed to have started the LBP2 pinball madness. So I decided once LBP2 came out to take that fun idea and expand on it till my head got dizzy. lol

http://lbp.me/v/zqv8mj

This pinball table has tons of bells and whistles and quite proud of how it plays. It is a semi less than normal gravity level using a sackbot as the ball. Makes for funny, delightful and challenging table play and gets quite quick once you start getting some shots down. By completing missions, taking advantage of bonuses, 2x multipliers, as well as getting a shot at the mini table below, you can really get some high scores. Also included is a sort of nifty scrolling messaging system that queues and plays mission information.

Best suited for one player, but all four can join in and view from the observation deck overlooking the machine.

Tons of combos to be found. Clear the flying jump pad bots for a shot to gain access to the mini table below the main table or send the bot up the ramp for some fun and entertaining effects.

Thanks to Morgana25, Smasher1973, Standby250 for play testing and suggestions. However, I have to thank most of all, TheCountessZ for a zillion+ plays during testing and quite a few awesome suggestions the help bring this table to life.

Thanks much! Hope you enjoy!

Definitely interesting. The mission aspect reminds me of the pinball game you can get on Windows XP, and I loved that. Queued. 2011-04-04 15:02:00

Holy coolness that looks nice! You should add that cheat from the Microsoft Space Pinball when you type in hidden test and press enter you can move the ball with the mouse. Haha just kidding, would make me laugh though!2011-04-04 16:15:00

Well, you already know what I think of it, but I'll tell ya again anyways. AWESOME!!! I loved this table. It has everything. The bots as balls is a nice feature too. This is my fave LBP pinball hands down. Thanks for making it!!2011-04-04 16:22:00

Yeh, its a great table jww - unlockable bonuses, gizmos and gimmicks is what I want from my LBP pinny! I played it a few times, and had an issue once where the bot fell into the shaft on the far left and stood quite happily at the bottom leaving me with only a re-start as an option, so have a look into that area. Other than that, no problems. Really fun and addictive this one!2011-04-04 17:36:00

Played it and really liked it. Had a nice visual theme to it all and I liked the instructions being something you don't always have to go through to get to the game itself. The use of a Sackbot for a ball really makes it, and I loved the mini pinball table that unlocks in the center. My Sackbot somehow managed to perch itself on a very thin section just above the chute by the left flipper, and I thought it was going to just stay there, but it jumped up to un-stick itself which I loved since in any other pinball game I've played that would require a restart. Very fun overall, and nothing to really fault on. I'll probably be playing this a few more times to try and find everything in case I missed something. 2011-04-04 18:37:00

Thanks so much for all the feedback!!! So glad it either looks fun to play or you already enjoyed it. That makes me happy to see such a positive reaction to something that was so much fun and near and dear to my heart to create for you all.

Ooooohhh - wow - this looks FAR better than the one in the beta. Queued!!!

lol.. yup. I go all out when I know I get to keep stuff!!

I went back in the Beta and took some notes on some settings here and there, but for the most part this is a whole new machine based on what I learned from my Beta version. Actually quite a bit larger from the old one.

Definitely interesting. The mission aspect reminds me of the pinball game you can get on Windows XP, and I loved that. Queued.

Yeah.. I loved that XP pinball game too! I like task / mission logic on pinball machines. Give you extra purpose as well as quite a bit more points while smacking the ball around. lol

Thanks! While everyone else went nuts making sackbots act, giving them special powers and weapons... I decided to smack them around.

I didn't know about that cheat! lol

Thanks so much!! Really appreciate your suggestion on the flippers in case of LBP physics glitches. Actually it seems it is almost a defense as I haven't had it happen to me since!

Actually I have it set to have him turn into goo after 3 seconds if he gets in there. I had the tag a bit high once I decided to disable the bounce pad in that chamber till active. Shoulda seen him get in there and do nothing but bounce up and down and rack up zillions of points... though you were stuck. Should be ok now! ..though still amazing he CAN sometimes get in there!!!!

Yup.. I added in a bit of acting in hopes of having folks groan and just about the time they reach for that play button... he leaps. Much easier to do that with a bot rather than a ball. ...looks much more natural too. LOL!!!

Thanks for the comments!!

This game is SOOOOOOO much fun! Just switching out the ball for the sackbot gives this pinball (????) game a totally different feel. It's a blast listening to his little robot sounds and watching the sackbot's antics as he flies around the table.

And wow, what a table! I marvelled at the different special effects and nuances you filled the table with. It felt like a great table should feel - lot's of depth, cool goals, hidden gems.... tons and tons of things to look at and do.

I didn't run into any flaws - worked like a champ. It kept me on the edge of my seat - seeing Ungreth's score up there as a goal the whole time kept me glued.

Thanks much Ccubbage! Glad you like it!

I had a blast making it and probably would have gotten it done much sooner had I not sat and just played it so much. ...but all that playing just had me tweaking it more and more till I felt everything was just right.

This was a true pleasure to help test. The table is so filled with action and sounds, but the visuals just blow me away. I mean...I've seen it since its infancy but the pictures you posted made me realize how beautiful the whole thing is. Fantastic job...I'd love to see you do more pinball levels because you have the real feel of a pinball machine down to a tee! 2011-04-05 11:40:00

I can't believe how many times I played this...good thing it doesn't take quarters!

The sackbot adds a lot of charm and wonkiness that makes this table very unique. Who wouldn't love a pinball game where the "ball" laughs and runs down the flipper? The table design is fantastic...lots going on. The spinning triangle bumpers that wander in the middle are genius.

You've done a great job making the bot behave, the free ball on a squash, making him jump after being perched on something for a while, etc. The collision detection with the flippers/bot seems flakey at times but it works well enough to be a heck of a lot of fun and very addictive.

I did get the bot stuck twice and had to retry. Both times were during the red-gas loop sequence, he somehow got off the path. How difficult would it be to kill the bot if the sack person pops themselves and respawns at the entrance checkpoint?

Just great!

Thanks so much and glad you enjoyed. All your help on this one has been wonderful. Getting your feedback, watching you play has been invaluable. It just wouldn't be anywhere near as fun without your help. Bless yer heart and thanks!

lol.. gosh if it did take quarters I would be broke as well from playing so many times!! So glad you enjoyed it so much! Thanks for all the kind words!

Yikes.. he got stuck on the ramp? Could you give me an idea of about where that was? I have detectors that should make him turn to goo if he gets outside that and stays stuck for over 3 seconds.. as well as quite a bit of logic to get him up and around the corner.

Here is a pic if you could point out about where he got stuck for me, I can tweak some sensor ranges. You can sorta see the path as I have the holo very dimly lit when not in use to act like the plastic they usually use on ramps. Thanks much!!!!

Ohmygosh... this is addictive!
You pretty much nailed it jwwphotos, it don't think i've ever played a level 35times in a row without getting bored
I did run into a problem though (with a score of over 70k on my second bot, gggrrrr...)
After my ball was lost in the little pinball machine, the bot didn't return to the main pinball, the jumping pads appeared again and i was still able to play the little pinball machine (if i lost my ball, a new one appeared, seems like it was stuck in somekind of loop. The orange pads on the ceiling didn't work anymore aswell, the only solution was a restart...)

Thanks so much misty!

lol.. I just left you a note saying how much I enjoyed the two pics!! lol Thanks for stopping by the thread!

So did the bot die when it possibly triggered the sequence? The reason I ask, is in reality he never goes anywhere as I just stop him when he makes contact with that right most triggering channel when activated. I have had the bot die on contact and still initiate the sequence, but it seemed like I could just shoot a new bot after the mini table closes up. ..however in thinking about it, I could see how what you described might have happened.

Thanks so much for the info! I will go check it out here in a bit!

hm, i don't think he really died, although i didn't see him anywhere (?), it was a weird situation where i was able to play the 2 pinball machines at the same time.
I was able to play the small pinball (but that was pretty useless since the orange pads on the ceiling didn't react, i did get a new ball everytime i lost the current one which shouldn't happen i think?)
at the same time the jumping pads where in front of the small pinball machine and i was able to play the big pinball machine... but without a bot

misty

Apparently I am oblivious. I was bored waitng for the hole in the table to heal up (I usually play with the cat during this time)...anyway started hitting L!/R1...I was controlling little flippers! Much easier to get a high score with this little bit of knowledge...doh! Now I just have to figure out what happens if you manage to break all three yellow/orange/red gates on left side...2011-04-06 05:20:00

LOL!!! That is too funny!!!

Yeah.. that is a mini table that gives you 5000 per each clearing, plus I think 500 per each flag. You just have to watch though, getting it to trigger in that right slot can end up losing your bot.

Ummm.. the 3 left side targets are progressive points. Maybe like 250, 500, 750? It might also give another bonus once all 3 are down. Can't remember offhand, but it also triggers the ramp to go into x2 points mode. So rather than 2300 points. (100 X 23 segements) you get 4600 for the ramp. ..of course the x2 clears back to normal after you lose the bot down the middle.

I've played it countless times since the last feedback, and the only issue I've had is with the small pinball, where I cleared the rack of letters twice in a row, failed at clearing the third set and the bot didn't release. It's only happened once, and I've never managed to clear two sets of letters in one go before so I guess it must be related....2011-04-06 13:08:00

Hmm... I dunno. I have cleared them quite a few times in one go and never had that problem. It sounds like something I had happening during creation and since fixed... Hmmmm weird!!! lol

I will take it into create mode and play it to see if I can replicate and see what is going on.

Thanks much for the input!! ...and for all the plays. This is so cool that I created such a hit!

Sounds a bit like like the problem i had (bot not releasing)
Meanwhile i encountered another problem, on the top left (under the 4 green pads) there are 3 yellow/orange pads. My bot got stuck there, giving me 1000 points every 3 seconds, while drinking a beer i gathered 150k just by watching my bot bounce in an endless loop, no way to respawn a new bot though

Argh.. yeah, amazing how a bot can get into a channel with almost a paper thin bit of space, while completely bypassing the holo that is there to register the impact and thus break the wall for those progressive targets.

I had that happen quite a bit during creation and made it so I thought impossible, but those bots seem to defy physics at times. I have actually seen one go through the solid wall at the right back into the channel to launch him again.

I will look at adding some extra logic to see if I cannot eliminate that.

Thanks!!

I meant to ask - what does it mean when 1)the table flashes blue? and 2) the animations and stuff just above the flippers change?2011-04-06 17:41:00

The table flashes during mission completions as well as once you clear both the flying patrol pads. The circular center design bits above the flippers adds a new level up for each time you clear the patrol pads. If you clear a total of 5 sets, you get a 5000 point bonus and clears the display to track a new goal of clearing 5 of those.

..not to be confused, but in between balls I cycle all the lights except those targets/goals/combos that have been gained. Quite an elaborate system of logic I built to track all that! lol

Fantastic job JWW! I gave it a go the other day, and I found this level to be fantastic.
It felt a bit odd at the beggining playing with a sackbot instead of a marble, but I got used to it very quick and I really enjoyed it.
I was trying hard to reach the top ten to proove "I was there", but I got only 11th!!

Thanks so much Poms! Glad you enjoyed!

I did the first pinball sackbot game in the beta... For some reason while everyone else was making sackbots do double jumps, shoot fire out their hands, acting out stuff, or doing cinimatics, I wanted to smack them around in a pinball machine. Weird huh? lol

The score chase is horribly tight. ..then Morgana upped the anty and set the new top score. Not sure how long that will last though..

Thanks again!

oh, jwwphotos, what have you done to me. I'm addicted to this level. I absolutely love it, and I'm obsessed with cracking the top ten. Why it does not have more than 500 plays eludes me. I played this a little while ago and then forgot to leave any feedback! So sorry!

I have to confess I came to it with a slightly jaded attitude. You know, sort of “heigh-ho, yet another pinball level to play”! Very silly of me. I should have known that a Space Escape Pinball level would be like no other. You made the whole thing so fresh. The idea of using sackbots instead of a ball was pure genius. I particularly loved the voice SFX they had – so cute. Then the level had such depth – so many different things going on, great lighting and sound effects and fun mini-games. Something new seemed to be happening all the time; there was just no chance of getting bored.

To be honest, you had me hooked from the moment I entered the level and saw the familiar Space Escape setting – even down to the red cross bubble dispenser – good times, lol! The thing that brought the biggest smile to my face, though, was the hidden prize bubble. I was messing around and remembering Space Escape II when I thought that for old times’ sake I’d just see if there was anything stashed in the old hiding place and there was! I lol’d – great touch.

Anyway, brilliant pinball level – definitely my favourite one in LBP2 and not remotely “just another pinball level”!

I think the biggest problem was the DDOS attack against PSN that caused so few plays in my 3 days of publishing. My luck simply sucks. lol Just happy that of the ones that have played it, most have loved it. The heart unique play ratio is great. ..if you hit the info button you will find that the replay rate is quite a bit larger. Almost looks more like a survival challenge where you might live 20 seconds forcing a replay. ...wish they tracked how much time those replays took. That would be very very interesting indeed.

Thanks again!

lol... I am very sneaky like that. Might be a part of why it has so few unique plays. It isn't at all what you expect. ...but those that know me start to realize, I don't do anything like others. I like to shift your reality a bit and glad to hear I did that for you. yay!

Glad you found the prize bubble. Now how many have tried getting over that large entry turret / bridge that is shut down? ..with 80% gravity, you can jump a bit higher than normal. lol

I guess my whole thought was it might be overstating a theme, but to also give another thought to why does that ship exist? I mean in SE1 and SE2.. you are still stuck.. still wandering around running into all sorts of crazy gadgets as well as strange pest control systems and hidden mini games. ...now here is a pinball machine?! Sorta the chicken and egg question.. Did the ship become the pinball machine? Is it the reason for the ship? ...or has the machine become the ship? ...well reality is a funny thing at times, but chances are I have a better answer to all that in SE3.

However for now I am taking a long needed break from anything LBP. With the Caption Contest, the Creator Spotlights and videos as well as now finishing this machine after LBP2 came out... I am way behind on everything to do with my life.

The great news is TheCountessZ and I are buying a house!!! So in a very short time, we will be packing up moving and settling in a really nice house just a few miles north of where we live now. To do that, I need to concentrate on packing, organizing, moving, unpacking as well as getting all new appliances, internet, cable, utilites as well as a ton of other things that go along with owning a house for the first time. Like even buying a lawn mower!?!? AAACK!!! lol

So thanks everyone!! Really happy you enjoyed my level and got to see a bit more of my zany insanity. I am so glad you found it warm as well as a very happy and fun experience. That was everything I think I was really hoping for...

To be honest... I think I knocked it outta the park.

All the best!!

Mucho agreement with the above post, I also am a sucker for a well made pinball level, but this one goes above and beyond the genre. The sackbot ball and his reactions are genuinely funny and he gives the whole game a very unique feel.
Add to that the fact that there's so many missions and extras that you won't see most of them till you've played it many, many times... Which you will!

Yikes.. he got stuck on the ramp? Could you give me an idea of about where that was? I have detectors that should make him turn to goo if he gets outside that and stays stuck for over 3 seconds.. as well as quite a bit of logic to get him up and around the corner.

Here is a pic if you could point out about where he got stuck for me, I can tweak some sensor ranges. You can sorta see the path as I have the holo very dimly lit when not in use to act like the plastic they usually use on ramps. Thanks much!!!!

I got it to happen two games in a row! :-D

The problem seems to only occur if I give the bot a good smack as he races down the left flipper. In order for the bug to occur, you cannot slow the bot's progress at all ... He falls down the chute, slides to about the mid-point of the flipper, and then WHACK, screams up the ramp, and basically jumps the north edge of it.

I'll try to get a screenshot the next time I cause it to happen. In the meantime, here's an edit of what I remember, using the image you gave to us.

Hmm, now that I look at the image again, he sorta lands northeast of where I drew his figure.. more on top of the wall. My initial memory was of him sitting on the corner of the bumper, but I think he breaks completely free of the ramp.

He never tries to auto-tilt (jump back down to the playfield) either...

Thanks so much for that!

I haven't fired up my ps3 for quite awhile, but based on what you are saying I have another thought on maybe how to fix. Most of the other ones reported have flown off one of those moving jump pad patrol bots and done it so fast at just the right angle. This report is a bit different as you are saying it is right off the flipper.

Thanks again! I will post an update when I have played with it again as well as republished.

You're welcome, JWW.
It is pleasing just to be peripherally involved in such a detailed project (i.e. bug reporter).
