The Great Diamond Heist

I've published my 4-player adventure game and would like to share it with you all. I took a great deal of help from this site, so I hope it at least approaches the standards set by some of the other creators here.

As the title suggests, this is based off some of the classic heist movies. The idea of a heist game has been rolling around in my head for a long time, but since I don't foresee any publishers coming to ask what game I'd like to see made, I figured I'd put a LittleBigPlanet spin on it and make it myself.

In doing so, I've pretty much done everything in my power to ensure that this level never gets played through to completion (I've joked with my testers that I should move the credits to the beginning of the level instead of the end so they actually get seen). First, it requires four players, so the audience is already pretty limited. It's long, starts out with a movie, requires you to do things that are outside the norm on LBP and therefore requires a tutorial, which therefore requires you to read... None of which caters to the shorter attention span of the average LBP player. Regardless of all that, there has to be some players around here that will appreciate it, right? Right?!

Anyway, as mentioned, the game requires four players to play (You can't really be an "elite team" of world-class thieves without teammates, after all). There were several times during creation that I toyed with the idea of dumbing it down, but -for better or for worse- I held true to my original idea. Often times I find myself in a group with three other players and we're always doing the same thing: Skipping a bunch of levels marked [1P Only], or struggling to get through a level that works with multi-player, but wasn't tested that way and doesn't work well, or being stuck playing the same Vs. levels over and over. So, this is my attempt to give us a fun, varied, story-driven adventure game to try out cooperatively.

This turned out to be a real genre-buster, even more so than I had planned. As the description says, the level combines platforming, puzzles, mini-games, stealth, some co-op gameplay elements, and some cut-scenes. As such, it's a little bit precarious in places, but it's been tested extensively (sometimes I had to have 4 controllers in my lap to do so), so I'm still confident it will play well.

I hope that if you've got a couple friends and you're looking for something to do, you'll give this a shot. Thanks in advance for trying it, and for any feedback you may decide to leave.

I played the first part and saw the opening intro. Once you gave me the decision of what character to play I picked demolition but it didnt work. I really wanted to continue with the game but it wasnt working for me. Please respond back so you can help me out so I can help you with any feedback. Other than that it looks really intresting.2011-04-03 07:45:00

*agrees with comments in OP*
I would love to give this a go. Heist + dino skeleton = win in my book.
I'll queue it and hopefully play it someday. It's hard to find x4 friends when ya need em (and hard to find multi player levels when you do!).
I hope it does well, because as you said, you have already limited your potential audience a bit. It's hard enough getting plays on a normal level.
Hopefully I'll have some feedback for you in the next week. (or maybe 2 weeks if I run out of internet, which is more likely, ha..)

@ zenspirit25: Are you playing with 4x players?

I just noticed that. Too bad I dont have that many friends commited to play. Oh well. Seems like a great piece of work. It has potential.

I appreciate the interest.

@zenspirit25 Yeah, the profession select part is where the 4 players are required. Nothing starts until all 4 positions have been filled. I hope you have a chance to see it through someday. I guess I should put the "Four Players are required" part in caps for emphasis. I'm ok with the fact that some people can't play it, but the description is wordy and the 4-player part could be easily overlooked. I fear that people may miss that, play the level, pick their profession and get hung up like you did, then put in a frowny face thinking it's broken and never look back.

@midnight_heist You know I was on the lookout for the monkey with the Cyclops visor... Anyway, yeah, I appreciate you queuing it up and sitting on it till the circumstances work out.

I knew what I was getting into with this. I understand I made the criteria to play it quite difficult to meet. But I do hope the level gets some attention, not only for the obvious reason of it being mine, but because I think it does fill a niche (a niche with small demand, but a niche nonetheless).

I've gone over the level several times and have several notes on what must be changed to take this down to a two player affair, but I'm still hesitant to do so. If this level slips into the bottomless pit of levels never to be seen again, perhaps I'll resurrect it by doing that. But in the meantime, I'll say that if you're interested and have the means, you can preview the level if you have 4 controllers. The limitations of the game cameras and movie cameras in a multi-player environment restricted what I was able to do, and prevented a lot of simultaneous 4-player events. As a result, if you have the hardware (and the patience), you can see the intro movie, play the tutorial level, and watch the first act. After that though, things get tricky (Believe me, I know, I've spent a lot of time testing this with a controller in each hand and two on my lap). I'd advise getting help after that, but to check things out, it's an option.

Oh, and one thing I forgot to add in the OP, I didn't make this F4F because I didn't want anyone to feel any obligations to jump through hoops to play this level just because I left feedback on theirs. However, if all the planets do line up for you and can get a full play through of this level and leave feedback, I'll do my best to return that favor.
