Boss alternatives?

Archive: 17 posts

I find it hard to make a boss fun to beat, and have only played a few that I have enjoyed.

What other ways are there to end your levels with a bang?

Hmm, Try to see how long you can go until you die . (Although, for people like me that would be up to 2 hours.)2011-04-02 03:50:00

I have never really done a boss myself either. The way I like to finish levels off is either with something scenic, and fun to play or, like you said "a bang."

My contraption of choice would be a canon/catapult that flings you at full speed into the scoreboard (see Mechanical Engineering (http://lbp.me/v/tqdx45).) But, my levels are normally story-less platforms. If your level has a story that you want to convoy, and a boss is the only way you can think of doing it, you don't necessarily have to make an uber complicated battle.

You could maybe make the player have to collect objects in order to defeat the boss? Have the player solve a code? Make them backtrack and find/enable things that were previously inaccessible? I'm just brainstorming here, but i'm sure there are a ton more ways to make a boss without an actual 'battle.'

A big finish isn't always a necessity however. Just look at the story levels, most of them are pretty straight forward in there endings, but still deliver nicely. If your heart is set on a big fanfare finish though, and need inspiration, here's one of my favourite creators who does that thing a lot. His PSN is LFiers (http://lbp.me/u/LFiers). Play some of his stuff and i'm sure you'll come up with something!

Hope this helps!

I have to say, I quite enjoy 'traditional' boss battles, and I'm ending each level in my three-part series with one. It's a fun change of pace in platforming to instead of jumping around at full speed being grinded to a halt and having to think about what you're doing.

As for alternatives, riding a large vehicle/creature/winged bathtub to the scoreboard, a movie or incorporating it into the gameplay (I think what I'm thinking of here is what Mr_T-Shirt did in Mechanical Engineering, I can't remember) are all things I can think of.

I feel your frustration since I'm having exactly the same dilemma. I desperately want to finish my new level and be done with it so I can focus on other stuff, but I just can't get the final boss done in a way that does the rest of the level justice. I've been studying youtube clips of classic boss fights from classic games which has helped a little bit, but still no pay off for me yet. I feel reluctant to explore alternatives though...it's like giving in to weakness and admitting defeat.

I ended my Jumper level with a Survival Challenge (although, you don't die, it just ends the level and ends in a cinematic way, then teleports the players to the scoreboard. On my Dream Catcher levels, which are story levels, I tried to end with very unique visuals. Even though I haven't made a boss battle, (they tend to be tedious to play most times), I do try to end the level with some flare.

Some suggestions:
Incorporate the gameplay to reveal the scoreboard in a really unique way.
Have a Chase at the end instead of boss.
Don't actually fight the boss. Have the boss win.(Example, have the devil send the players to a fiery scoreboard, or have the monster eat and swallow the players and have scoreboard in his stomach.

Just a few things you could do instead. Hope that sparks an idea.

I like to end with a cliff hanger. I am talking about the ending that makes the player wanting for more. This makes a perfect place to end the level and encourages a second level. They can be anything from danger to leting the boss get away. Or, you can end with the player haning from a cliff.

Also, I cant do it, but i love the first ending CYMBOL said. The ones that stand out the most are LockStiches first levels.

many ways to kill a boss:

attacking the brains
painting the paint life bar
simulating attacks with logic
doing a puzzle to beat the boss
boss chase scene a la LBP1/2 (skulldozer and the chicken robot)

many other ways i could think of...but for now hope those help

Personally I don't enjoy survivals in general. (you're gonna die eventually!)
Might work for some people, but it's definitely not for me.

Yeah, my potential boss could be replaced with a cutscene, but I don't think that would be as satisfying for the player..
I always hated it in games when the cutscenes showed awesome things that you couldn't do in gameplay. A pet peeve of mine if you will..

One alternative I did enjoy was in pom's LBP2 tv level, where you just rode a machine (I forget was it was) and just shot a bunch of TVs up.

@ungreth:
Yeah, I don't like giving up either. :/
If I do, it's always going to be in the back of my mind annoying me forever.. O_O
Mind if I take a look at your boss?

@cymbol:
Unique visuals might be an idea.. perhaps a cutscene could work..
Yeah, my "boss" would most likely be a chase scene. I know I will have problems with the logic though.
Having the boss win wouldn't work in my level, but a cliffhanger might..on the other hand I think making sequels is a sell out.

I... I just don't want to end the level with something average!
Thanks for the responses so far people.

WHAT?!
To be honest I'm terrible at checking messages (fb, phone, psn, email, etc), please don't take it personally.

You're welcome to see what I've done so far. I've worked out the visual side of things, but it's wholly unimpressive in terms of gameplay so far.

After playing The Mind Factory by jackofcourse, I noticed he always seems to incorporate the scoreboard into one last puzzle, which I always find entertaining 2011-04-03 18:31:00

A chase is always a good way to end it, with the heroes making an escape that the boss can't. This only really works if you want the player to feel overpowered by the boss. Or, speaking of escapes, they are always fun too. The heroes destroy the boss's lair with him inside, then try to escape as the level falls apart around them. That allows you to stick with the platforming that you're comfortable with, but also add a degree of both urgency and finality. This also allows the player to be triumphant over the boss instead of being overpowered like the chase scene. (Unless, of course, you're ok with a cowardly boss and the hero chases them...)2011-04-04 22:10:00

I'm a big fan of chase scenes (sniped by nextlevel). My very first real level, which was originally going to be a three part series before I abandoned it (could never get the mech to work well enough that it was fun to play) was going to end with a chase scene. While I never did finish the middle part of the level and I never got the mech working right, the chase scene was working great and I was very happy with it. Since I scrapped that series, I added a similar chase (albeit, a much shorter and simpler one) into a level I published later.2011-04-04 22:23:00

MH...you might be reassured to hear that with consistent brain storming, experimentation and a refusal to submit to creative weakness, I finally have a clear boss concept and plan to work with. I think the first step I took towards making progress was leaving the actual level behind and taking an empty level space to work with, where I could approach the process of building boss on an individual basis, away from the clutter of all that will eventually precede it.2011-04-04 23:29:00

Is your level a story level?

Like said, I personally dislike boss fights. 99% of them are very tedious.

One of my favorite boss/ Chase scenes was in Comphermc's level, All Mine. You should check that one out.

Also, in my Jumper level, although it was a Survival type challenge, it could be beaten. It wad just a score challenge, you could get a pretty high score if you last as long as the timer. Either way, it ended with credits and fades out with white, then the players get transported to the scoreboard.

It did really well, and most people that finished the level gave it s heart. Not only that, but I've gotten lots of requests for me to make that its own level (which I've decided to do).

I always try to have a unique ending. It's your last impression on the player. Don't let the logic scare you away (I HATE logic and if you look at the pics in my showcase thread, you'll see a pic of some of the logic at the end of my level) but if I had let that stop me, I don't think people would have liked it as much.

Attempt to make what you have in mind, and when you get stuck, just ask the community for help. Shoot for perfection buddy.
