The 3DS and first impressions. Also: Wally World.

Archive: 2 posts

Mkay, I just picked up my 3ds yesterday. dunno if its at all stores or just the world of wally, but you can trade in your ds system for 25(nds), 50(dsl), 75(dsi) or 100(dsi xl) in trade in credit. I got me a fat 75 off for mine. promotion is through 4/30 iirc.
Now for the hands on crud.

Note that i was too poor at the time to afford a game(want pilotwings nao!) for it, so its all the stuff that comes with it that I'm referring to.

Mkay, first things first.

just wanna point out that the instruction manual is 109 pages per language, 3 languages, and longer, wider, and heavier than the actual system. that is a good thing, though. thorough documentation saves lives. or in this case, keeps me from getting irritated.

charging cradle
This thing is pure awesome. No, its like awesome wrapped in bacon. all small portable devices need something like this out of the box. and to top it off, its simple. there are two prongs that pop out of the cradle when the 3ds is sitting in it. power plug goes into that. You can also plug it directly into the 3ds but i'll choose the lazy way thank you.

Battery life:
I can only comment that it is at least that of my dsi with the 3d on and screen set to bright.

Hmm. what next?

button layout:
Standard fare for a post advance system, with three marked differences.

there are two cameras on the back to accommodate 3d picture taking.
There are built in accelerometers, and a gyro-sensor in it. (the stuff that tells it how fast its moving and wether or not you are playing while standing on your head.
It has a nice fat joystick nub on it. it works like the psp one, in that it slides instead of rocks around a central poing, but it is larger, from the top down looking more like the top of a 360 joystick nub.

Everything seems to work as advertised, though i cant really say for sure till i get my hands on some games, but yea.

Oh yea. there is an IR transceiver on the thing. not really worth mentioning yet, tho.

Teh touted 3-d screen:
its.....hmm. iffy. I expected it to be but it does have its problems. For instance, a 3d game like just about any of the built in ar games expects you to move around quite a bit, and if you arent in a very small focus area looking directly on, it ain't gonna work. Also, if you hold it sideways like a book, as some ds games asked you to do, you can no longer see the 3d. that said, it does work when you view it normally, but stuff that use the gyro or lots of movement tend to defeat this neat, if gimmicky, feature at times.

SD-Card slot/ included 2g sd card:
standard fare, dsi owners had the same thing, though i don't think it came with a card.

Interface:
alrighty. the interface can make or break the thing. so how is it? Hmm. well its a mixed bag really. layout is fine i guess, and the ability to hit the home button, jot down a note, then go back to your game is sweet. Thing i don't like is the reliance on the touch screen for certain things. there are no button equivalents for a lot of stuff, so you must use the touchscreen. now, that is really more of a gripe than a concern, but there ya go, right?

Anyway. special mention to the top bar of the touchscreen. it has:

the brightness settings and power saving mode
the icon size buttons(Go from having a dsi like row of icons to showing the entire thing at once)
the game notes button. just a little note pad where you can record hints, draw maps, that kinda stuff.
the friends list. You can tell who's online and what they are playing provided the options are set on the thing on their end.
the notifications button. its basically the wii message board for the 3ds. all i've got is a tad o info on the stuff i've used, but its there and its functional.
the browser button. It doesn't work, and probably will stay that way till late may. Yea. you heard me.

and the bar on top of the 3d screen has this to say!:

connection strength. This system is more of an almost always on connection, rather than the simple on off need based that the dsi and even the psp have, so this is much more pertinent. also it tells you what its hit. it can say internet, streetpass(more on that later), local (ad-hock games-wireless multiplayer type stuff), enabled(nothing to connect to), or disabled(wireless off)
Pedometer/coins. the pedometer counts steps, and every 100 you get a coin, up to a maximum of 10 a day and a total of 300. these coins are used in various games, as well as the mii plaza and the ar games.
date and time. to give you the date format, mine currently reads: 3/31 (Thu) 23:32
ye olde battery icon. guess what it does?

Also it has four info lights on it. they are

Power(blue)/sleep(pulsing blue)/low battery(red, blinks when critically low)
charge
wireless
notification(streetpass, spotpass, system. basically like the light on the wii system.)

Mkay, interface, battery, what next. built ins? that sounds good.

first off. it can play any ds/dsi game that DOES NOT use the advance cartridge port.

Secondly, an update will allow it to transfer items bought on the dsi shop to the 3ds at a later date, sometime late may i think they said.

ok, in order of awesome, or usefullness we'll get to the apps in it.

game

any game card you stick in it goes here.

ar games

I have been playing with this toy since i got the thing. You get 6 playing card looking things with the system. the main one is a ? block. http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32665 it starts the whole thing rolling.
set it on the table and a box will pop out with legs. (you remember mario 64, the little box that had a lot of coins if you could catch it? that thing.)http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32678
from there you get a few options, some of which need to be unlocked. Archery, ar shot, which is basically pool and golf mixed together, fishing, grafitti, mii pictures, and star pictures. the star pictures is the only game that currently uses the other five cards.
the other 5 are mario, pikmin, young link, kirby, and Samus(not the whiny, co-dependant one from that last awful game, but the one from all the ones before that.) http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32679http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32677http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32676http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32675http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32674http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32672
there are several other things to unlock as well: free fishing, archery 2, ar shot 2, globe, 3d tools, clock.

face raders

you capture a face on camera, and then they fly around in helmets with propellers while you shoot what appear to be ping pong balls at them. sounds simple but it can get challenging. Never gets hard though. if that makes any sense.http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32666
you unlock stages by capturing more faces to use in it, apparently.

3ds camera

all the fun of the dsi camera, with a bit more control and some updated tools. and 3d pictures if ya want.

3ds sound

plays aac in .m4a, .mp4, .3gp
plays mp3 in its native .mp3 format
bitrate has to be 12kbps-320kbps and sampling rate between 32kHz and 48kHz
cannot play DRM

mii maker

More options than the wii, and can be made from a pic you take of someones face.
You must make a Mii for the purpose of having one connected to your online tag...or something. I don't remember why offhand, but you'll end up making one.
also it has a couple of options such as send/recieve and QR code/image options. You can use these to send/recieve mii's through qr codes just like you can use the playstation eye on lbp .me or however it works. Heres a couple of examples for my Mii.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=32669

mii plaza

well, its a tad different than the wii plaza, in that you can actually play a game. you can also get hats to accessorize your mii with. also, mii's from games may show up in your plaza as well as people via streetpass.

activity log

same as the activity bulliten on the wii, i suppose.

there is some 3d video of OK Go performing White Knuckles

which will be automatically deleted come the next update.

Download play

can do 3ds or nds/dsi

System Settings

all the fun make it work stuff, system update, calibration, that stuff.

Health and Safety Information.

Yes, its actually a channel on the system. don't think you can get rid of it either

Thanks for the review I got mine on thursday too, I got Cosmo Black! And I have Nintendogs + Cats (Bulldog Edition) and PilotWings!!! This is a very awesome system and I actually do think the NGP may have a hard time competing against it (Sorry fanboys). I picked mine up for $75 (USA) off of $250 (USA) so for a total of 190$ (USA) with tax and everything. Got it from my local GameStop 2011-04-02 23:10:00
