How long on average do you spend on a level..

Archive: 43 posts

Before you publish it?

I know people who spend weeks and months on them, I've never spent more then a week on a level.. I seem to lose interest if i go on any longer ><

What about you guys?

Depends on the kind of level I built. Never less than 16 hours or so and that's for a mini game. For longer levels easily a couple of weeks. At the moment I have hardly any time to play so even the shortest level would at least take two weeks to finish.2011-03-31 11:23:00

My latest took about 2 months, but some of that was just getting to know the quirks of all the new stuff . The new tools have obviously sped up some aspects of create, but instead of spending 4 hours making a logic system, I'll spend 4 hours getting the camera angles on a cinematic sequence. (which is way more fun btw, but the game is still just as much a timesink as ever!)2011-03-31 11:36:00

Mine is still on going since I finished the game. I only really get two free days (more or less) to do stuff in the week and I'm still learning. I also have a habit of getting too many ideas at once and changing my mind half way through. So for me it's been over a month. I'm yet to publish anything. I'd rather spend a lot of time on it polshing it up until I'm happy. May be I'm just a slow creator being all new to the LBP2 tools. I guess it depends on the type of level you're making.2011-03-31 11:52:00

I would say it deppends on the type of level im building. If Im building a platformer it would normally take at least 3-4 weeks build, and if its a survival it normally takes no more than a week or two, tho my Sackbots, Sorted level took me no more thn 6 days to finnish(i did have some help tbh).2011-03-31 12:09:00

The fastest i've ever made one was probably a in few hours, maybe 6? The most i've spent is around a month and a half.

The thing is though, I make so much stuff that goes left unpublished. I've honestly spent months making a few levels, only to scrap the whole thing.

I'm my own worst critic.

I've definitely spent more time on the levels nobody else get's to see.

retail levels I publish range from less than a week to 2 months... the most recent one, Essence of Madness, took a couple months to finish, with putting 10 hours into it the last couple of weeks everyday. Who needs sleep when there's a level that has to be done?2011-03-31 12:49:00

I usually take around 3 - 4 months on a level. Mini game usually 1 - 2 months. Though my current mini game (WIP) is slowly turning towards 3 months due to all the complexity and me just sitting around play testing all the time because it is so much fun. 2011-03-31 13:11:00

Mine take several months on average, usually because I try to make my custom objects as detailed and life-like as possible, but partly because I'm just very slow at making the logic and coming up with gameplay elements. My Sheriff Sack 2 level in LBP1 took just over 6 months. That's the longest so far but the average is 2-3 months per level.

I have to make logic up as I go so probably something that takes me 10 days to get working could probabaly be done by a logic expert in 10 minutes! My new LBP2 Einhander level is going very slowly because of it. I've probabaly spent 6 out of the last 7 weeks just trying to make logic and there's loads to do yet. I've only had a few days actually making the objects for the level so I've only made the main ship, 1 enemy and a HUD since the game came out. So at this rate I may finish my level by Xmas, just don't know which Xmas, or as Mm would say : "soon".

4-6 weeks on average for me, which translates roughly into 150-200 hours. I'm spending a lot more time on logic these days in order to do fancier stuff, though the overall create process goes much more quickly for me now.2011-03-31 13:30:00

As long as it takes until I'm happy with it

Latest one began in the beta, and I started to rebuild the logic at launch, it still isn't done...

Depends what I'm making - the level series I'm making right now is taking quite a few months - I think it's been around 3 so far, and of that I've managed to make a Main Menu and two chapters, plus most of Chapters 3 and 4. I won't be publishing anything except what's already on the DEMO until everything else is done.

I've been noticing a few comments on one of my levels basically people telling me to hurry up, and almost being angry that I'm not spending every waking minute on LBP finishing a level series so that they can play it. I get quite angry by this - I mean, I'm making this level series because I enjoy it - not just so I can satisfy a few members of the community, who basically sit there shouting at me because I'm trying to make a level series I enjoy and am happy with, as well as actually have a life outside of LBP. It frustrates me majorly - I mean, normal games take ages to make - such as ones you'd buy in a shop. Also, those games have whole teams working on them, and are being paid. I'm not being paid, I work on my own and LBP is not my job - it's leisure.

Sorry for ranting a little there, I just took this opportunity to make my feelings clear - something I've been wanting so say for ages!

Well 3 months so far, the good thing is once i finish, it will be easy to finish the series because its basically copy and paste, and little editing. Its probably gonna come out the last week in April so maybe 4 months lol Ive been creating since release. I guess you could say the first 3 months i spent experimenting with logic, since the game changed drastically a bunch of times. But i guess im one of the more slower creators...2011-03-31 14:15:00

1 mouth - 1 week depends on how much time i got and level complexvity

1 mouth, you release levels in your mouth?
The question was about time not place

I'm bad at math.
I've released a level after having worked on it for 4 months...
then I worked on 3 for like eternity and won't ever release them I think...
then I have a level in co-create done in 2 months
and one co-create in 1 week.

so the average is
[4months+(eternityX3)+(2months/2)+(1week/4)]/7
...I think

Both my levels took about 60-70 hours, over the course of well over a month. And one of them isnt even finished, although it never will be.2011-03-31 18:20:00

My last level took me about 6 weeks in total.
Usually i have everything mapped out before i start...and then 1 week in, i change about 80% of it.
I do get fed up with play testing though. Out of them 6 weeks i probably play my level about 200 times

Jumper took 2 months - but, I wasn't part of the beta - so everything was new to me. The LBP2 logic probably saved me a month or two alone. Creating in LBP2 is still slow cause I'm still learning - but still, I can do so much more in half the time.

Some of my LBP1 levels took up to 5 months. Each Dream Catcher level took about 5 months.

I'm remaking the first Dream Catcher (since the lighting destroyed my LBP1 levels) - but I'm going to guess 3-4 months for this one.

Sure, LBP2 makes creating complicated things much easier- but those complicated things now take up just as much time.

I'm going to guess my LBP2 levels will take 2-3 months each. Wish I could be one of those people who has hours a day to devote - or could simply create quickly.

Haha wow I'm kinda taken aback by just how much time some of you spend. Personally, I must take only 12 hours or so on each level.

But wait! I have excuses! My levels are mostly built off of ideas, and I always plan to spend ages on one idea but when I'm working on it I think of two more so it just goes on. I do have a load of unfinished projects because of this, probably about 100 hours or so :/

Well it takes the fella who made "DONT PUSH THE RED BUTTON" who has 8 THOUSAND PLAYS! in 4 hours and is top of cool level list...
48 seconds!
My next level will be about a block and string.
I will be MM picked... watch!

On my latest, SoS Ch.1, I spent about a week and a half on the basic build and then another week on playtesting, updating, bugfixes.
The one I'm working on right now(Ch 2) has so far an accumulated dev time of a month and I'm far from done!
Main reason for this is that it's basically three levels in one.. in different genres as well.

Well, with the old piston logic and a month of prior LBP1 experience under me, the 2nd Temple of Bubbles, my second level, took about a month and a half....but my friend and I also spent a decent amount of time just messing around in create mode and play-testing as well.2011-04-22 18:34:00

Averagely taken 1.5 week per level.
but I have finished levels in as short as 6 days. (Beh'Ta comes to mind).

If the level has something extremely complex, like a boss or so I like to spend a few days of not a week or more on it to make sure its fun and well balanced.

the 10-level big spaceshooter I am working on with clay is another story.
the spaceship alone took us a month to finalize.
and trust me, it will show.

For me, I'm nearly always in create mode. I'm such a slow worker because my latest level, which was published in LBP1 took me about 2 months to complete! My other level, which is currently locked, I cant remember how long it took D: I know it took a long time.. For my average, it is mostly a month to do a level of mine, so yeah, it really depends on what level you're making. I mostly leave my levels scrapped :S I lack ideas mostly..2011-04-27 15:57:00

Yea me too, i remember saying four mounths a while ago that my first episode would be done, now im starting to lose count lol--of course some of this wasn't my fault, But i guess this game lets me understand why developers delay games

The longest time I have spent on one level so far is one year and four months. That is the first level of a series of playable levels Im working on that take place in hell. The arrival of lbp 2 with its new tools and features, forced me to rebuild my almost finished first level of the series and has set me back about 5 months waiting and rebuilding it to lbp2 standards. Now finally rebuilt with lbp2 logic and lighting, the level is looking better every day. idk how long it will be until I publish it. It could be two or three months from now.Hopefully the other levels will be built faster than this one.2011-04-28 07:50:00

Wow, six days is pretty fast for New Beh'Ta, being reminded in your signature about the visuals.

I usually take several weeks or even over a month making a level and messing about with it... I really need to create quicker and stop dawdling lol.
